In the year 4 ABY, Admiral Ackbar tasked the Freemakers with a crucial rescue operation: retrieving Major Bren Derlin. Derlin had made his escape from an Imperial Star Destroyer using an escape pod. Rowan Freemaker's simultaneous quest for a proton suspension housing to complete the Arrowhead made their assignment more complex. Despite being tricked by the Weequay pirate Hondo Ohnaka and hunted by the Imperial hunter droid M-OC, the Freemakers succeeded in acquiring both the vital component and meeting up with Bren.
During the Galactic Civil War, Major [Bren Derlin](/article/bren_derlin], a Rebel Alliance spy, embarked on a secret mission aboard an Imperial Star Destroyer. He managed to evade pursuing stormtroopers and escape in an escape pod with the intelligence he was sent to gather. After separating from the Star Destroyer, Bren contacted Admiral Ackbar, reporting his mission's success and requesting immediate extraction.
Ackbar dispatched Zander and Kordi Freemaker aboard their ship, the StarScavenger', to extract Derlin. However, the mission took an unexpected turn when their younger brother, Rowan Freemaker, joined the mission and persuaded his siblings to make a stop at Maz Kanata's castle on Takodana, a planet conveniently located along the route to Derlin's coordinates. The rebel spy's escape pod was adrift in a debris field near the acidic planet of Taul. Rowan sought Maz Kanata's wisdom on acquiring a proton suspension housing from a Corellian Defender, a component large enough to house a bantha–sized kyber crystal. Despite Kordi's reservations, Rowan convinced the agreeable Zander to divert their course.
While at Maz Kanata's castle, the Freemakers encountered the Weequay pirate Hondo Ohnaka, who had previously enlisted their assistance in procuring three varactyl eggs from Takodana's Third Moon. Hondo offered his help in obtaining a proton suspension housing from a Corellian Defender. Due to Hondo's well-known reputation for deceit, the Freemakers initially hesitated to accept his offer until he convinced Zander of his expertise with starships. Ignoring Maz's veiled warnings, the Freemakers agreed to Hondo's proposition.
In exchange, Hondo requested safe passage off-world, as he had angered the bounty hunter Awan Zek, whom he had cheated during a game of sabacc. Following a brief altercation, the Freemakers and Hondo successfully evaded Zek and his Rodian accomplices. One of the Rodians recognized Rowan Freemaker from the Empire's wanted list and informed Zek, who then reported Rowan's location to the Empire. The Imperial hunter droid M-OC intercepted Zek's communication and journeyed to Taul aboard his starship Tracker I.
After landing the StarScavenger on Taul, the Freemakers discovered that Taul was an acidic world characterized by intense thunderstorms and falling rocks. Enduring the hazardous conditions and navigating acidic lakes, the Freemakers eventually reached the wreckage of a Corellian Defender, which was precariously perched atop an acidic lake. Unable to extract the Corellian Defender from the lake without causing its destruction, the Freemakers deployed the Mini Scavenger to infiltrate the wrecked starship. Despite facing some challenges, Rowan successfully used the Mini Scavenger's chain to retrieve the proton suspension housing just before the Corellian Defender succumbed to the acidic lake.
Before the Freemakers could resume their mission to rescue Major Derlin, they realized that Hondo had absconded with the StarScavenger. Their situation worsened when M-OC arrived in the Tracker I and destroyed the Mini Scavenger. The Freemakers were compelled to confront Taul's perilous environment while evading M-OC, whose metallic body possessed the ability to self-regenerate. Rowan engaged M-OC with his lightsaber but was pushed back by M-OC's flamethrowers. M-OC sustained a hit from a rock but quickly regenerated. The Freemakers successfully crossed an acid lake, and Rowan severed the bridge using his lightsaber. However, M-OC activated his rocket boosters and continued his pursuit across the lake. Rowan then launched his lightsaber at M-OC in a boomerang-like manner, causing the droid to plunge into the lake. However, M-OC deployed his spider legs and resumed his pursuit. Rowan then tossed a metal pole near M-OC, which was subsequently struck by a bolt of lightning, electrocuting the hunter droid.
Meanwhile, the Freemakers' B1-series battle droid Roger discovered Hondo aboard the StarScavenger and deduced that he had stolen their ship. Following a struggle, he managed to confine Hondo within a sealed compartment. Roger then piloted the StarScavenger to Taul and successfully retrieved the Freemakers. The Freemakers then journeyed to the junk field and rescued Derlin from being targeted by two marauding TIE fighters. After rescuing Derlin, the Freemakers reported the success of their mission to Admiral Ackbar.
Before heading back to the Alliance Fleet, Rowan delivered Hondo, confined in a chest, to Awan Zek and his associates. Darth Vader later recovered M-OC and had him repaired aboard the Super Star Destroyer Executor. The Freemakers continued their endeavor to construct the Arrowhead and embarked on a mission to acquire an energy matrix activator from their garage located at the Wheel space station.
The Rescue of Bren Derlin constitutes the central narrative of the LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures Season Two episode "The Storms of Taul," which debuted on August 2, 2017.
