The Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game is a game of tactical spaceship combat, brought to you by Fantasy Flight Games. It allows two individuals, or two teams, to take command of starships like the Rebel X-wings and the Imperial TIE fighters, and engage in thrilling battles in space. The game utilizes intricately crafted and painted miniatures, bringing to life various Star Wars space battles through scenarios included with the game. Prior to the game, players have the opportunity to choose their crew and map out their strategies to successfully accomplish their objectives. Initially, the game was slated for release in early 2012, but the Core Set and the initial wave of expansions were first shown at the Gen Con gaming convention on August 17, 2012.
A revised, self-contained second edition was released during September of 2018.
It is important to note that this game is distinct from the capital ship combat games Starship Battles and FFG's Star Wars: Armada](/article/star_wars:_armada).
In X-Wing, you command powerful Rebel X-wings and agile Imperial TIE fighters in a tactical ship-to-ship combat game, pitting them against each other in fast-paced space battles. Featuring stunningly detailed and painted miniatures, X-Wing recreates exciting Star Wars space combat throughout its several included scenarios. Choose your crew, plan your maneuvers, and achieve your mission!
Within X-Wing, each ship type has a unique piloting dial associated with it. Each turn, players secretly choose a speed and maneuver. Starting with the pilot with the lowest skill, each player reveals their selected maneuver and executes it. Official gameplay uses one of the provided scenarios, a variety of customization options, diverse maneuvers, and possible combat outcomes. Randomness is incorporated through dice rolls and drawing cards from a shuffled deck.
The initial release, known as the Core Set, included advanced rules scenarios. These scenarios were also found in five subsequent releases, namely the Millennium Falcon, Slave I, Lambda-class Shuttle, Imperial Aces, Rebel Aces, YT-2400 Freighter, and VT-49 Decimator Expansion Packs. There are also packs that feature campaigns, which are a string of connected missions.

To provide extra dice for the game, both physical and virtual dice packs were made available. This includes a set of six custom eight-sided dice, with three red attack dice and three green defense dice. This lets both players have their own full set of dice, removing the need to share the dice from the Core Set.
For iOS and Android devices, a virtual application of the Dice Pack was created and made available in app stores. It allows players to choose and roll custom dice in the X-Wing™ Miniatures Game, the Star Wars Roleplaying Game, and Star Wars: Edge of the Empire, and even includes seven kinds of polyhedral dice for all other gaming needs. The app features the ability to save commonly used configurations as "presets," eight backgrounds and six sound packs from the Star Wars universe, and an easy-to-use radial menu and help guide.
The Starfield Game Tile Kit is a vivid backdrop for playing X-Wing games, which lets players create custom environments using any combination of twelve double-sided matte-finished card stock tiles (one-square-foot each) mounted on 2.5mm fiber board for durability. The tiles show several Star Wars–themed images, including starfield, Alderaan, asteroid field, and Death Star tiles. These can be combined to create a wide array of Star Wars scenes. The kit also has rules that allow players to competitively set up the battlefield, instead of just cooperating in pre-game construction.
Although the game itself is written as "X-Wing" (with a capital W), the in-universe ship is always written as "X-wing" (with a lowercase w), just like in other media.
Lucasfilm gave Fantasy Flight Games exact measurements and access to information about the models from the original trilogy so that the ship models would be correctly proportioned and detailed.
