Tales of the Jedi: The Fall of the Sith Empire 3: First Encounter represents the third installment within the Tales of the Jedi: The Fall of the Sith Empire narrative arc, part of the broader Tales of the Jedi series of comic books. Dark Horse Comics released it on August 20, 1997.
Before the galactic domination of the Empire... before the emergence of the Rebel forces striving for a New Republic... there existed the era of the Old Republic. The narrative of this once-great oligarchy's descent from power commences herein, within an episode entitled "First Encounter"."
During tests of the Starbreaker 12, Ssk Kahorr, along with his aide Gorrm, are shot down by the invading Sith warships. This event fills Gav Daragon with horror and outrage. Naga Sadow, the Dark Lord of the Sith, assures Gav that his sister, Jori Daragon, was not present on the ship. Sadow then commands his forces to launch an assault on the Republic capital located on Coruscant. While Gav is assigned the task of leading the primary fleet, Sadow withdraws to his Sith Meditation Sphere to focus on developing their most formidable weaponry.
Concurrently, Memit Nadill arrives on Coruscant and is met by his fellow Jedi, Tuknatan and Sonam-Ha'ar. Before they can fully evaluate the planet's defenses and gather the Jedi forces, the Sith Empire appears with an armada of ten thousand vessels and a substantial Massassi army, accompanied by war beasts, which proceed to wreak havoc on Republic City. As the Battle of Coruscant intensifies, the Jedi establish a secure perimeter around the Senate Hall.
At Empress Teta's palace situated in Cinnagar, the Empress scrutinizes a tactical display illustrating the multi-pronged Sith offensive against the Republic. Jori Daragon and Jedi Knight Odan-Urr are also in attendance. Faced with numerically inferior forces, Empress Teta accepts an offer from Llaban, the former Kirrek rebel Commander, to defend his home planet of Kirrek against the Sith Empire in exchange for amnesty.
As the Sith initiate their invasion of Koros Major, Odan-Urr provides Jori Daragon with a lightsaber for self-defense, and then departs for the impending Battle of Kirrek. Gav Daragon, in command of the Koros Major invasion fleet, descends to the planet's surface, accompanied by a contingent of Massassi bodyguards, in search of his sister Jori.
Upon landing in Cinnagar, Gav is appalled by the devastation inflicted upon his hometown. After disembarking from his vessel, he enters Aarrba's repair dock. Aarrba, labeling Gav as a "traitorous salt-monger," spits on him, prompting the Massassi to retaliate with lethal force, much to Gav's shock and dismay. Aarrba also manages to kill several Massassi. Jori arrives and, presuming that Gav was responsible for Aarrba's death, attacks him with her lightsaber.
On Kirrek, Odan-Urr and his Master Ooroo prepare for battle as Sith drop ships touch down on Kirrek, releasing thousands of Massassi and war beasts onto the battlefield. The former rebels take up defensive positions along the walls and in the trenches, armed with pikes. The Sith deploy their warriors and war beasts, thereby initiating the Battle for Kirrek.
