Vangos Grek

Vangos Grek, a human pilot, fought for the Alliance to Restore the Republic during the era of the Galactic Civil War. He found himself stationed at the launch base situated on the planet of Tierfon, where he served as a member of the Tierfon Yellow Aces. As Imperial presence intensified, the base was abandoned, leading to the squadron's dissolution. Grek, along with three fellow pilots, received new orders, relocating them to the Alliance's Great Temple headquarters located on the moon Yavin 4.

During the Battle of Scarif in 1 BBY, Grek became part of Blue Squadron, adopting the callsign Blue Six. With orders to assist Alliance forces on Scarif's surface, Grek attempted to pass through the Shield Gate before its closure. Unfortunately, he fell behind and met his death, crashing his T-65 X-wing starfighter into the sealed gate.

Biography

Yellow Ace

During the Galactic Civil War, Vangos Grek, a human, served as a pilot within the Starfighter Corps of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. He gained membership in the Tierfon Yellow Aces, a squadron operating from the rebel launch base on the Expansion Region planet Tierfon. The squadron engaged in numerous missions from the base until their successes attracted increased Imperial attention in the sector. Due to encroaching Imperial patrols, the Alliance made the decision to abandon the base, resulting in the Aces squadron being disbanded and reassigned to different locations. Grek, along with Zal Dinnes, Jek Tono Porkins, and Robich Duggsin, his fellow Yellow Aces, was transferred to the Alliance's headquarters within the Great Temple on the moon Yavin 4, representing the largest group of pilots from the squadron to be assigned to the same location.

Grek and Duggsin were incorporated into Blue Squadron under the command of General Antoc Merrick, while Dinnes and Porkins became part of Red Squadron. In 1 BBY, Admiral Raddus deployed Blue Squadron, among other forces, to aid a group of rebels attempting to steal the plans for the Death Star superweapon on the planet Scarif. Piloting a T-65 X-wing starfighter with the callsign Blue Six, Grek was present when the Alliance Fleet emerged from hyperspace in the Scarif system and engaged the stationed Imperial forces. Raddus instructed Blue Squadron to provide support to the ground forces during the battle, which required the squadron to navigate through the Imperial Shield Gate, the sole access point through Scarif's planetary shield.

Race for the gate

Vangos Grek was killed when he crashed into the Scarif Shield Gate.

Merrick ordered the squadron to rally around him, and the pilots initiated their rush through the gate before it closed. Grek and Barion Raner, designated as Blue Four, found themselves trailing behind the other pilots as part of a subsequent wave, but they remained determined to succeed. However, as Grek urged his and Raner's engines to accelerate, Raner realized their impending failure. He pulled up, issuing a warning to Grek via comms, but Blue Six persisted and, along with another pilot, collided with the now-closed gate.

Grek became the battle's first fleet casualty, killed as his craft exploded in a brilliant fireball, leaving Merrick to ponder whether the pilot had maintained full speed throughout or if an additional second of acceleration could have altered the outcome. Despite the Alliance's eventual success in acquiring the plans, all Blue Squadron members who had successfully traversed the gate before Grek, including Merrick, also perished.

Personality and traits

While attempting to pass through the gate, Grek implored his craft to move faster, only to scream upon realizing the impending crash. He possessed a fair complexion.

Equipment

Grek's K-22995 light flight helmet featured a gray and red color scheme and displayed two prominent yellow starbirds of the Tierfon Yellow Aces, a common emblem among those stationed at Tierfon. He also wore a blue flight suit paired with a white flight harness and a gray Diagnostech life support unit.

Behind the scenes

Vangos Grek's flight helmet

Vangos Grek was conceived for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a film within the Star Wars Anthology Series that premiered on December 16, 2016. The character's initial reveal occurred in the film's second trailer on October 13 of the same year. Although not explicitly identified in the film, the junior novelization by Matt Forbeck referred to the character by his callsign, Blue Six.

The reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: The Ultimate Visual Guide, authored by Pablo Hidalgo, identified Blue Six as Vangos Grek in the caption for an image of the helmet he wore. Conversely, another unnamed pilot wearing the same helmet is incorrectly labeled as Grek in the 2017 reference book Rogue One: A Star Wars Story - The Official Mission Debrief. The adult novelization of Rogue One erroneously claims that Grek was the sole pilot to crash into the Shield Gate, despite the film clearly depicting a second vessel's collision.
