A historian of human male descent, Voren Na'al lent his services to both the Alliance to Restore the Republic and the subsequent New Republic. Around the time of the Battle of Scarif, Na'al held the rank of lieutenant within the Alliance's military. During this period, he collaborated with Major Arhul Hextrophon on a project known as "Official History of the Rebel Movements, Volume One". By the time the Battle of Hoth occurred, he was an archivist for the Alliance.
Near the time of the Battle of Scarif, Voren Na'al, a human male, functioned as a lieutenant and historian within the Alliance to Restore the Republic's military. He was actively engaged in a project with Major Arhul Hextrophon entitled "Official History of the Rebel Movements, Volume One". When Jyn Erso was presented to Chancellor Mon Mothma and the rest of the Alliance High Command at Base One, Na'al was present in the briefing room. He subsequently summarized the meeting's events in a report for Hextrophon. Furthermore, he planned to interview Mon Mothma following the battle. This report later found its way into a compilation of documents assembled by General Airen Cracken, the Chief of Rebel Intelligence, for Mothma. Arhul Hextrophon mentioned Na'al's intention to interview her in a communication with Mothma titled "DOC #0320194-ALL," which was included in The Rebel Files, and suspected he began writing his own book.

Na'al was also present at the ceremony that celebrated Luke Skywalker and other heroes of the Battle of Yavin. He carried one of the Medals of Bravery, which General Jan Dodonna gave to Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan, who then bestowed it upon Skywalker. By the time of the Battle of Hoth, Na'al was functioning as an archivist within the Alliance. Following the conflict, lieutenant Wedge Antilles provided Na'al with a summary of the battle in a classified correspondence titled "RI 087-R2 Action on Hoth" that was included in The Rebel Files.
Na'al had truly become a historian by the time the New Republic arose. He attended the Arhul Hextrophon School of Embedded Journalism on Lerct at some point, where he encountered fellow historian Beaumont Kin. After The Rebel Files were rediscovered on Durkteel in 34 ABY and handed to the Resistance, Amilyn Holdo and Ushos O. Statura annotated "DOC #0320194-ALL". Holdo mentioned that Na'al intended to have a two-hour lunch with her the next time he's on D'Qar, and Statura noted his humble beginnings. By 35 ABY, Na'al and Kin were in communication with each other.
Voren Na'al's origin lies in the in-universe role of "author" for several Star Wars Legends roleplaying sourcebooks released by West End Games, starting with Galaxy Guide 1: A New Hope in 1989. The character subsequently appeared in numerous other reference books. In 2012, the "Rogues Gallery" feature in Star Wars Insider 133 identified one of the extras handing medals to General Dodonna as Na'al, retroactively establishing that film as his initial appearance. Derek Lyons, who also portrayed a member of the Rebel Honor Guard earlier in the scene, was the extra in question.
The character achieved canon status with his mention in the 2016 reference book Star Wars: Rogue One: Rebel Dossier.
