During the Galactic Civil War, Will Scotian was a male human serving the Alliance to Restore the Republic as a pilot, fighting against the Galactic Empire. He survived the Battle of Hoth, and following this, he was recruited into Red Squadron by Wedge Antilles along with Wes Janson, continuing his service as a pilot.
In the year 3 ABY, Scotian was among the rebel forces stationed at Echo Base on the planet of Hoth when the Empire attacked. While listening to a briefing given by Princess Leia Organa in Echo Base's hangar, Scotian leaned over the laser cannon of an X-wing starfighter. Organa explained that the present pilots would be responsible for escorting the rebel GR-75 medium transports past the Imperial fleet orbiting Hoth. The rebels at Echo Base were successful in their escape from the Empire, although they suffered losses.
Not long after the evacuation from Hoth, Commander Wedge Antilles recruited Scotian into the newly re-established Red Squadron. He was given the callsign Red Eight and served as a flight leader, piloting a T-65B X-wing starfighter in an attack against a pirate base that was a threat to the Alliance's rendezvous point. Ix Ixstra and Cinda Tarheel were his wingmates during the attack, and their flight's role was to provide interference, covering Antilles' flight as they targeted the landing field. Unfortunately, his wingmate Ixtra was killed.
Scotian had brown [hair](/article/hair] and light skin, and he wore an orange flight suit while stationed on Hoth. Scotian was a well-regarded pilot who had previously flown alongside Antilles and Janson, which made him one of their initial choices when they began to rebuild Red Squadron. Scotian was later promoted to flight leader.
Will Scotian's initial appearance in canon was in the 1980 motion picture Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, though he was not named at the time. The character's name was officially established within canon by the LEGO Ultimate Collector's Series Snowspeeder set, which was released in 2017.
Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, Scotian's first appearance occurred in the 1996 novel Shadows of the Empire by Steve Perry, with his last name being confirmed in the Shadows of the Empire Sourcebook, written by Peter M. Schweighofer and also released in that same year. The Rogues Gallery section of Star Wars Insider 146, released in December 2013, retroactively identified him as one of the pilots in The Empire Strikes Back.
