Baird Kantoo

Baird Kantoo, a male human, achieved the rank of Jedi Master before the Old Republic was established. Obsessed with designing a weapon suitable for the Jedi, Kantoo utilized his mastery of the Force to meld multiple kyber crystals into a singular blade, thus birthing the Kyber Saber—recognized as the galaxy's inaugural lightsaber. This weapon amplified Kantoo's Force capabilities by a factor of one thousand. Upon realizing the potential danger the Kyber Saber represented, Kantoo shattered it into seven distinct pieces. He entrusted these fragments to six Jedi Knights, tasking them with concealing the crystals across various locations in the galaxy. Later in life, Kantoo became a member of the Force Builders, documenting the secrets of kyber crystal construction within a holocron. This holocron was then hidden at the exact location where the Kyber Saber had been destroyed.

For countless millennia, the narrative of Kantoo was carefully preserved within the Jedi Archives, only to be discovered by the Sith Lord known as Darth Vader. Vader then tasked Naare, a Sith agent, with the mission of locating these crystals. Her search commenced on the planet Nal Kapok. It was during this time that Naare crossed paths with Rowan Freemaker, a youthful individual displaying Force-sensitive abilities, who felt a distinct pull toward the crystals. In an attempt to secure Freemaker's cooperation, Naare falsely presented herself as a Jedi, claiming a mission to retrieve the Kyber Saber before it fell into the hands of Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine. Freemaker, believing her, agreed to assist, and Naare successfully gathered all seven fragments, enabling her to reconstruct the weapon. However, Freemaker eventually uncovered Naare's true allegiance. To honor Kantoo's intentions and acknowledging him as a hero, he destroyed the Kyber Saber by casting it into a river of lava on Sullust. Subsequently, Freemaker unearthed Kantoo's concealed holocron and was deemed worthy to learn the Master's Force-related techniques.

Biography

Crafting the first lightsaber

Baird Kantoo has the Kyber Saber fragments hidden.

Before the rise of the Old Republic, Baird Kantoo stood as a sagacious Jedi Master within the Jedi Order. Driven by the desire to fashion a weapon befitting the Jedi, Kantoo employed a clandestine Force technique to merge several kyber crystals into a single, robust blade—the Kyber Saber. This weapon possessed the capability to amplify his power by a thousandfold. However, while situated on a planet in the Outer Rim, Kantoo experienced a loss of control over his amplified power. Inadvertently, he caused the destruction of the planet's moon, leading the Master to fully grasp the inherent danger of his creation. To prevent its future use, Kantoo shattered the Kyber Saber into seven pieces, retaining the hilt for himself and entrusting the remaining fragments to six Jedi Knights whom he held in high regard. These Knights then secreted the Kyber Saber crystals across the vast expanse of the galaxy. The account of Kantoo's actions was meticulously recorded in a holocron, which was carefully safeguarded within the Jedi Archives.

At some point following the Kyber Saber incident, Kantoo joined the ranks of the Force Builders, a collective of Force-sensitive architects and shipwrights. During his time with this group, Kantoo meticulously documented his expertise in kyber crystal construction within another holocron. Ultimately, this holocron found its place of preservation within a Jedi temple located at the very site where the Kyber Saber had met its demise. Although deemed unsuitable for practical use, the Kyber Saber marked a significant milestone in the history of the Jedi, earning recognition as the prototype for all subsequent lightsabers. These later iterations of lightsabers were powered by kyber crystals, and the swords became the signature weapon of the Jedi Order.

Legacy

Millennia after the Kyber Saber's destruction, the Sith Lord Darth Vader discovered the holocron containing Kantoo's story within the confines of the Jedi Archives. Convinced that the Kyber Saber held the key to ending the Galactic Civil War and solidifying the Sith's dominion over the galaxy, he recruited Naare, a Sith agent, to embark on a mission to locate its seven scattered pieces. Naare commenced her search on the planet of Nal Kapok, where she encountered Rowan Freemaker, a young boy exhibiting Force sensitivity and a natural affinity for the Kyber Saber crystals. Seeking to gain Freemaker's trust, Naare shared Kantoo's story with him, falsely portraying herself as a Jedi on a quest to recover the Kyber Saber crystals before Galactic Emperor Sheev Palpatine could seize them. Freemaker, deceived by her pretense, pledged his assistance in locating the crystals, thus initiating their quest.

Leveraging Freemaker's unique abilities, Naare swiftly located the seven crystals. During an Empire Day celebration, the Sith agent reassembled the Kyber Saber, unleashing havoc at the Imperial Palace on the planet Coruscant. However, when Freemaker finally discerned Naare's true identity, he harnessed his connection to the Kyber Saber crystals to overpower her, seizing control of the weapon. Accompanied by his siblings, Zander and Kordi, Freemaker journeyed to Sullust, where he paid homage to Kantoo's legacy by casting the Kyber Saber into a river of lava, effectively destroying it. Some time later, Freemaker visited the very world where the Kyber Saber had first been destroyed, discovering Kantoo's holocron within the confines of the Jedi temple. The holocron projected a visage of Kantoo, revealing the secrets of kyber crystal construction while simultaneously cautioning against its destructive potential. Recognizing the inherent dangers, Freemaker initially hesitated to utilize this technique. However, after a conversation with his sister Kordi, he concluded that Emperor Palpatine could not be defeated without embracing the associated risks. Consequently, he constructed an amalgam of diverse kyber crystals to power his family's starship, known as the Arrowhead.

Personality and traits

Kantoo, a human male distinguished by his light-colored skin and long, gray hair, was esteemed as a wise Jedi Master. Following the creation of the Kyber Saber, he recognized its potential for immense danger, prompting him to shatter the weapon and entrust the pieces to trusted Jedi Knights. His conviction stemmed from the belief that no single individual should wield such immense power. In the millennia that followed, Kantoo was revered as a hero by Freemaker, who ultimately destroyed the Kyber Saber. When Freemaker discovered Kantoo's holocron, he was deemed worthy, and the holocron imparted the knowledge of kyber crystal construction.

Powers and abilities

Kantoo possessed exceptional skills as a Jedi Master, demonstrated by his discovery of kyber crystal construction techniques, which he then employed to forge the Kyber Saber. With this weapon in hand, Kantoo's power was amplified by a factor of one thousand. He kept this skill a closely guarded secret, eventually documenting the knowledge within a holocron.

Equipment

As a Jedi Master, Kantoo was typically seen wearing angular, tan Jedi robes and a brown cloak. Driven by the ambition to create a weapon worthy of the Jedi Order, he forged several kyber crystals into a solid, blue-hued blade, which became known as the Kyber Saber. This weapon possessed the ability to amplify one's skills by a thousandfold, a level of power that Kantoo deemed excessively dangerous. This realization led him to shatter the blade and conceal its fragments. Millennia later, the Kyber Saber was reconstructed by the Sith agent Naare, who nearly achieved galactic conquest through the weapon's power. However, Naare's scheme was thwarted by Freemaker, who possessed a natural connection to the Kyber Saber crystals, granting him control over the blade.

Behind the scenes

Baird Kantoo made his debut in "A Hero Discovered," the inaugural episode of the non-canon animated television series LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, which premiered in 2016. He later reappeared in "The Pit and the Pinnacle," the eighth episode of the show's second season. In "The Pit and the Pinnacle," Kantoo's voice was provided by Trevor Devall.

The Freemaker Adventures credits Kantoo with the creation of the first lightsaber. Within the Star Wars Legends continuity, the first lightsaber, referred to as the First Blade, was crafted by the Weapon Master of the Je'daii Order, while its predecessor, the Forcesaber, was forged by the Rakata.
