Skirmish on Coruscant (Kyber Saber)

On the anniversary marking twenty-three years since the Proclamation of the New Order, a brief battle occurred on the planet of Coruscant during the celebration of Empire Day. This conflict involved the Freemakers, the Galactic Empire, and Naare, a Sith operative, all vying for possession of the Kyber Saber. Using the Kyber Saber, Naare inflicted considerable damage upon the Imperial fleet orbiting Coruscant, which led Emperor Palpatine to order the evacuation of the Imperial Palace. After engaging Naare in a duel, Rowan successfully seized the Kyber Saber. Subsequently, he and his family departed Coruscant. Following the Kyber Saber's destruction, the Freemakers threw in their lot with the Rebel Alliance.

Prelude

After the events of the Duel on the Wheel, the Sith Naare absconded with the head of the B1-series battle droid Roger, journeying aboard the Eclipse Fighter to the remote, uncharted world where Rowan Freemaker and Roger had secreted away the seventh Kyber Saber crystal. Upon arrival, Naare utilized the seventh crystal to reconstruct the Kyber Saber. In a demonstration of the ancient lightsaber's capabilities, Naare employed the Kyber Saber to cleave through a mountain range and obliterate a nearby planetoid.

Shortly thereafter, Emperor Palpatine contacted Naare, reprimanding her for toying with his weapon and dismissing her as an inferior Sith. Irritated by Palpatine's condescending attitude and orders, Naare retorted that she possessed the galaxy's most formidable weapon and questioned why she should relinquish it to him. When Palpatine hesitated to provide a convincing response, Naare declared her intention to travel to the galactic capital of Coruscant to assassinate him and claim the title of Galactic Empress.

Meanwhile, back at the Freemaker Garage on the Wheel, Rowan employed his Force powers to rebuild both the StarScavenger and Zander Freemaker's Blazemaker Mark II. Rowan then informed Zander and Kordi Freemaker of his scheme to deceive Naare into surrendering the Kyber Saber by impersonating the Emperor. Rowan had acquired a dark robe and a voice modulator during their previous mission on Naboo. The Freemakers then resolved to journey to Coruscant, which was in the midst of celebrating Empire Day.

The skirmish

Undercover on Coruscant

The Freemakers piloted the StarScavenger to Coruscant, discovering that a significant portion of the galaxy had congregated for Empire Day. Given the heavy defenses surrounding the Imperial Palace, including Imperial Star Destroyers, AT-AT walkers, and [stormtroopers](/article/stormtrooper], the Freemakers opted to infiltrate the palace via the sewer system. While navigating the sewers, the Freemakers were confronted by a probe droid. Zander grappled with the droid, and Rowan disabled it with his lightsaber, causing it to fall into a drain.

Subsequently, the Freemakers encountered a significant chasm blocking their path. Rowan employed a grappling hook to create a makeshift zip line, allowing himself and his siblings to cross. Zander fell when a DLC-13 mining droid inadvertently severed the rope. However, Rowan used the Force to lift Zander onto a mining droid, saving his older brother's life. Rowan then used his lightsaber to cut a hole into a passage leading into the palace. The Freemakers encountered two stormtroopers but Kordi immobilized them with a chain. Rowan then donned his Emperor disguise and parted company with his siblings. He then headed to the Emperor's throne room.

Naare's rampage

In the meantime, Naare arrived above Coruscant aboard her Eclipse Fighter. The Emperor dispatched two Gozanti-class cruisers and their complement of TIE fighters to intercept her. However, Naare utilized the Kyber Saber to obliterate the ships. She then destroyed two Imperial Star Destroyers and issued a hologram message to the Emperor, declaring her intent to eliminate him. Determined not to repeat Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin's misjudgment during the Battle of Yavin, Palpatine ordered the immediate evacuation of the Imperial Palace.

He encountered Rowan but mistook the boy for an impersonator arranged by his subordinates. Rowan then waited in the Emperor's throne room. Meanwhile, Naare landed in the Imperial Palace's courtyard and discarded Roger's head, having no further use for the droid. Zander and Kordi rescued Roger, expressing their delight at seeing him. Roger then cautioned them about Naare's objective to assassinate the Emperor.

Within the throne room, Rowan, disguised as the Emperor, greeted Naare and requested the Kyber Saber. Naare then launched an attack on Rowan with the ancient lightsaber. Rowan successfully evaded Naare's strikes, resulting in the destruction of the throne room's furnishings. Recognizing Rowan, Naare vowed to eliminate the young boy. However, Emperor Palpatine attacked the Imperial Palace with two AT-ATs. Naare used the Kyber Saber to toss the massive walkers aside before destroying several more TIE fighters.

Stealing the Kyber Saber

Despite Naare's advantage, Rowan managed to use his Force powers to call to the Kyber Saber crystals. He then wielded the weapon against Naare's Sith lightsaber and created several walls. Naare sliced through each of these walls. Rowan then used the Kyber Saber to summon up rubble to encircle Naare. Triumphant, Rowan toyed with killing her and was egged on by Emperor Palpatine, who had arrived in a Lambda-class shuttle. Upon realizing that Palpatine was trying to entice him to the dark side of the Force, Rowan rejected the Emperor's overtures and escaped with the Kyber Saber aboard the StarScavenger.

The Freemakers then made their escape aboard the StarScavenger, navigating the skylanes of Coruscant while pursued by numerous TIE fighters. To confuse the Imperials, Zander led them on a chase and wielded Rowan's lightsaber in order to mislead the Imperials into thinking that he had the Kyber Saber. This ploy worked and allowed Rowan and Kordi to escape with the real Kyber Saber aboard the StarScavenger. Rowan then used his Force powers and the Kyber Saber to transform the StarScavenger's design. This enabled the ship to flee Coruscant undetected. Zander then fled into hyperspace as well.

Aftermath

Rowan Freemaker inflamed the Emperor greatly

Back in the Imperial Palace's devastated throne room, an infuriated Emperor Palpatine instructed his subordinates to add Rowan Freemaker to his list of most wanted individuals. However, given that Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia Organa, Han Solo, Lando Calrissian, Chewbacca, and R2-D2 already occupied positions on the list, the Emperor was compelled to place Rowan lower down. Naare attempted to flee but was intercepted by Graballa and his associates Dengar, Baash, Raam, and others who sought retribution for her violation of their agreement on the Wheel. As punishment, Graballa had her frozen in carbonite.

Following the Coruscant skirmish, the Freemakers journeyed to Sullust. Inspired by the tale of Jedi Master Baird Kantoo, Rowan resolved to destroy the Kyber Saber, recognizing its excessive power and inherent danger. Unable to return to the Wheel, the Freemakers decided to travel through the stars. However, they soon encountered the Alliance Fleet. Admiral Ackbar successfully persuaded the Freemakers to enlist in the Rebel Alliance with a job offer.
