The Quest for the Kyber Saber Crystals involved the Freemakers, a family of scavengers, in 3 ABY. Their goal was to locate the mythical Kyber Saber, a lightsaber made entirely of Kyber crystals. Naare, a clandestine Sith operative working for Emperor Palpatine, secretly motivated and aided the Freemakers. Palpatine aimed to harness the Kyber Saber's strength for his own purposes. Upon discovering Naare's true allegiance, the Freemakers, inspired by their youngest member Rowan Freemaker, engaged in a competition against Naare and Graballa, a Hutt crime lord, to secure the Kyber Saber's components. Although Naare succeeded in reforging the Kyber Saber, the Freemakers managed to seize it from her after a skirmish on Coruscant. Following Rowan's destruction of the Kyber Saber, the Freemakers enlisted in the Rebel Alliance.
Before the Old Republic's time, Baird Kantoo, a Jedi Master, crafted a weapon from unadulterated kyber crystals, naming it the Kyber Saber. This weapon became the prototype for all lightsabers. Realizing the weapon's potential danger, he shattered the blade into seven fragments and tasked seven Jedi with concealing them across the galaxy. During the construction phase of the second Death Star, Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader unearthed information about the Kyber Saber while examining the Jedi Archives. Seeking a contingency plan, Palpatine assigned Naare, a Sith, to retrieve the weapon.
Naare commanded a squad of stormtroopers to Nal Kapok, a jungle planet that once hosted a Clone Wars battle. There, she encountered Rowan Freemaker, who was Force-sensitive, and his B1-series battle droid guardian, Roger. Rowan had been drawn to the Kyber Saber's hilt by the Force. Naare, pretending to be a Jedi with her blue lightsaber, rescued Rowan and Roger from a dianoga's attack. Recognizing Rowan's Force sensitivity, she befriended him and saved his older siblings, Zander and Kordi Freemaker, from being captured by stormtroopers.
After gaining Rowan and his siblings' confidence, she went with the Freemakers to their garage and home on the Wheel space station within the Abrion system. There, she persuaded them to allow her to instruct Rowan in the Jedi ways. She informed Rowan of the Emperor's intention to reforge the Kyber Saber and convinced him of the need to locate the crystals before the Emperor. Trusting Naare, Rowan entrusted the hilt to her care. The Freemakers permitted Naare to reside in an adjacent apartment rented from their Aqualish landlord, Furlac. Naare then secretly contacted the Sith Lords, assuring them she could manipulate Rowan into guiding her to the Kyber Saber.
During a "Jedi lesson," Naare prompted Rowan to utilize the Force to pinpoint another Kyber Saber crystal on a holomap. Through the Force, Rowan sensed that the second crystal resided in the Belgaroth asteroid field. However, Kordi, Rowan's older sister, harbored suspicions about Naare and opposed taking her younger brother on what she considered a pointless quest. While Naare and Kordi argued, Rowan and Roger commandeered one of Zander's Z-wings and journeyed to the Belgaroth asteroid field to retrieve the second crystal.
The pair infiltrated a Hutt mining facility situated on an asteroid. Following a treacherous journey through the factory's conveyer system, Rowan successfully located the second crystal embedded within an asteroid. He was rescued from falling into a lava vat by DLC-13, a DLC-13 mining droid befriended by Roger. Before they could depart, they were confronted by Baash and Raam, Iktotchi bounty hunters who escorted them to their employer, Graballa, a Hutt crime lord residing aboard the starship Rancor's Fist.
Graballa swiftly learned of the Kyber Saber from his unwilling guests and attempted to coerce Rowan into leading him to more crystals by threatening to feed the boy and his droid to his pet Nexu named smiley. However, Kordi and Zander, disguised as salespeople offering a Z-wing, interrupted Graballa. Naare then liberated Rowan and Roger. After Graballa realized the deception, the Freemakers and Naare escaped aboard the Z-wing into the Belgaroth asteroid field. Naare subsequently employed her Force abilities to obliterate the majority of Graballa's pursuing starfighters.
Nevertheless, the second Kyber Saber crystal was lost in space during the skirmish aboard the Rancor's Fist. Naare became furious and nearly deployed the laser cannons on her Eclipse Fighter to destroy the StarScavenger. However, Rowan quickly sensed the crystal's proximity and retrieved it. This pleased Naare, who felt she was now closer to reforging the Kyber Saber.
Following the events in the Belgaroth asteroid field, Graballa sent his bounty hunters Dengar, Baash, and Raam to locate the "boy" so he could use the Kyber Saber crystals to fund his beach resort and buffet. Meanwhile, the Freemakers embarked on a mission to Cloud City to recover the "lost treasure" of Lando Calrissian, a rebel leader. Suspecting the Freemakers were searching for a Kyber Saber crystal, Naare followed them there. The mission was further complicated by the presence of Dengar, Baash, and Raam, who were also searching for the mysterious "boy." Naare allied with Kordi and Zander to rescue Rowan from Graballa's bounty hunters. However, Naare was disappointed to discover that the "lost treasure" was merely Lando's blue cape.
Later, the Freemakers undertook a mission to acquire a piece of Wroshyr wood from Kashyyyk, the Wookiee homeworld, to cover their rent and bills. After receiving the wood from Attiburra, the Wookiee chief, the Freemakers reluctantly agreed to rescue his son Tantarra from a Trandoshan island fortress. During this mission, Rowan sensed the presence of the third Kyber Saber crystal within a Trandoshan statue. With Tantarra's assistance, the Freemakers successfully obtained the crystal. However, the wroshyr wood was damaged, preventing Kordi from earning money from Ignacio Wortan, a wealthy Twi'lek captain. Despite the mixed outcome of the mission, Naare was pleased with her apprentice's progress, as she had not anticipated finding the crystal on Kashyyyk.
Following the events on Kashyyyk, Naare was summoned to Coruscant by the Emperor and Darth Vader. There, she received a negative performance review from her Sith masters, who criticized her insufficient progress. Upon her return, Rowan began to suspect that Naare was not a Jedi after she caused a Force-sensitive flower to wither upon touching it. Rowan's suspicions were confirmed when he discovered her Sith lightsaber during a mission to Tatooine.
Back at the Wheel, Rowan and his family confronted Naare about her true identity as a Sith agent. Following a brief conflict, the Freemakers managed to escape to Takodana. There, they embarked on a mission to steal three golden orbs for Hondo Ohnaka, a Weequay pirate, from the third moon of Takodana. After the mission, the Freemakers were befriended by Maz Kanata, who rewarded Rowan with the fourth Kyber Saber crystal for standing up to Hondo and his gang. Meanwhile, Naare made a deal with Graballa to share the Kyber Saber crystals in exchange for helping them locate Rowan.
Before the Freemakers could leave Takodana, Naare and Graballa's ships attacked the StarScavenger and stole the fourth Kyber Saber crystal. After escaping into space, the Freemakers resolved to recover the remaining crystals to prevent Naare from reforging the saber. The Freemakers traveled to Ningoth, a watery world, where they recovered the fifth Kyber Saber crystal from an opee sea killer that had been using it as a searchlight. However, Naare and Graballa caught up with them and stole the crystal.
With limited options, the Freemakers headed to Theed, the capital of Naboo. There, the Freemakers discovered that the crystal was concealed within the former Theed Royal Palace, which had been transformed into the Emperor Palpatine Museum. Sneaking into the museum that night, the Freemakers found the sixth Kyber Saber crystal hidden inside the royal gown of the late Queen Padmé Amidala. However, Naare and Dengar intercepted them. The Freemakers managed to escape but lost the sixth crystal. After returning to the StarScavenger, the Freemakers discovered that the seventh crystal was hidden on Hoth and that Naare had been tracking them using Roger's transmission pack.
Reluctant to lead Naare to Hoth, Rowan convinced his siblings to travel to Zoh, a junkyard planet, and seek out the enigmatic Maker of Zoh. The Maker turned out to be Jek-14, a former Sith clone who had become a Jedi ally, ruling over a community of discarded droids. Jek-14 reluctantly agreed to train Rowan in the ways of the Force. The Freemakers' presence on Zoh triggered a droid uprising led by N-3RO, who successfully overpowered the humans. Before he could execute them, Roger spoke up for his human masters. In an attempt to save their lives, he reattached his transmission pack, summoning Naare and Graballa to Zoh. During the attack, the Freemakers fled while Jek held off Naare. Traveling on the StarScavenger, the Freemakers raced Naare and Graballa to Hoth.
The Freemakers piloted the StarScavenger to the frigid planet of Hoth, with Naare and Graballa in pursuit. The Freemakers managed to land safely, but Naare and Graballa's ships collided with a mountain. While Roger guarded the StarScavenger, the Freemakers ventured into a cave network and found the seventh Kyber Saber crystal. However, the crystal served as a keystone to a natural booby-trap system, triggering a cave-in. Rowan used Naare's appropriated Jedi lightsaber to dig himself and his siblings out. The Freemakers also befriended a baby wampa.
The Freemakers' mission was complicated when they discovered that Roger had inadvertently caused the StarScavenger to fall into an icy lake. Stranded, the Freemakers and Roger sought refuge at Echo Base, which had been taken over by Durpin and Plumestriker, disgraced Imperial officers whom they had previously encountered on Kashyyyk and Naboo. When the Imperials attempted to attack the Freemakers, the baby wampa and its mother defended them and chased the Imperials away. However, Plumestriker managed to alert Naare and Graballa.
Using an improvised AT-AT and snowspeeder, the Freemakers put up a fight against Naare and Graballa's henchmen. However, Naare used her Force powers to summon an avalanche, forcing the Freemakers to retreat into a cave. After Naare issued an ultimatum, Rowan tricked her by offering her an ice crystal while he and his family escaped into space aboard the StarScavenger. In an effort to conceal the seventh Kyber Saber crystal, Rowan and Roger took their scavenger vessel into hyperspace.
Rowan and Roger hid the crystal on an uncharted world. There, Rowan honed his lightsaber skills using training droids and Roger's memories. Meanwhile, Zander and Kordi traveled to Naboo, Cloud City, Kashyyyk, and Tatooine in a desperate search for their brother. Giving up, the older Freemakers returned to their garage and home on the Wheel. However, Garindan, a Kubaz spy, reported their presence to Graballa. Naare, Graballa, and his henchmen cornered Zander and Kordi at the Freemaker Garage. To draw Rowan out of hiding, Naare psychologically tortured the older Freemakers.
Through the Force, Rowan sensed his siblings' distress. He and Roger returned to save them but left the seventh Kyber Saber crystal behind. Returning to the Wheel, Rowan freed his siblings, and the Freemakers fought against Naare and Graballa's forces. Using his lightsaber skills, Rowan battled Naare. Employing her mastery of the dark side of the Force, Naare gained the upper hand over the Freemakers. After learning that Roger knew the location of the seventh Kyber Saber crystal, she stole his head. When Graballa demanded that she honor her side of the bargain, Naare turned on them and used the Force to expel them from the garage.
Naare then traveled to the uncharted world and recovered the seventh Kyber Saber crystal. Naare then reforged the ancient lightsaber. Tired of Palpatine's constant jibes and insults, Naare rebelled against her Sith master and declared her intention to destroy him. Meanwhile, Rowan used the Force to rebuild the Freemaker garage and their starship StarScavenger. Determined to stop Naare, he devised a plan to impersonate the Emperor and trick Naare into handing over the Kyber Saber. The Freemakers traveled to the Imperial Palace on Coruscant, where the annual Empire Day celebrations were underway.
Naare returned to Coruscant on the Eclipse Fighter and used the Kyber Saber to destroy much of the orbiting Imperial fleet. In response, the Emperor retreated from his palace to devise a counter-offensive. After navigating through the sewers, the Freemakers managed to infiltrate Rowan into the Emperor's throne room. Zander and Kordi then recovered Roger's head and saved several civilians from being killed by Naare. After storming the palace, Naare confronted the "Emperor" only to discover that she was fighting Rowan.
The Emperor then launched a counter-attack with AT-AT walkers, but Naare easily decimated them with the Kyber Saber. Using the Force, Rowan managed to summon the Kyber Saber to him and defeated Naare. The Emperor tried to provoke Rowan into killing her, but Rowan heeded the light side of the Force and instead escaped with his family aboard the StarScavenger. The Freemakers then fled Coruscant's cityscape and escaped into hyperspace. Meanwhile, Naare was captured by Graballa, who had her frozen in carbonite for her treachery.
Following the skirmish on Coruscant, an enraged Emperor Palpatine placed Rowan Freemaker on his 27th most wanted list. Meanwhile, Rowan took the Kyber Saber to Mustafar, a volcanic world, and destroyed the weapon by plunging it into a volcano. Unable to return to their garage, the Freemakers decided to travel the stars. They soon encountered the Alliance Fleet and accepted an invitation from Admiral Ackbar to join the Rebel Alliance.
The Search for the Kyber Saber is the central story of the first season of LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures, which debuted on Disney XD between June 20 and August 29, 2016.
