Beyghor Sahdett

Beyghor Sahdett was a Jedi Master of the Verpine species who lived through the end of the Galactic Republic and into the era of the Galactic Empire. Following Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's activation of Contingency Order 66, Sahdett was captured and turned into an agent of the Sith by the Empire. He went undercover to hunt down Jedi, joining the crew of the Uhumele in search of fellow survivor Jedi Master Dass Jennir.

Biography

A male Verpine, Beyghor Sahdett was trained in the ways of the Force by the Jedi Order, eventually becoming a highly skilled Jedi Master who wielded a green lightsaber with expertise. When the Clone Wars erupted in 22 BBY, Sahdett answered the call, leading clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic's into combat as a Jedi General.

Order 66

When Contingency Order 66 was given to all clone troopers, instructing them to eliminate their Jedi commanders, Sahdett's troops moved to comply. While on a forest planet, they ambushed Sahdett, but the Jedi's skill proved too much for the clones, and he used his lightsaber to cut down many of them.

Before long, Sahdett was captured by the newly established Galactic Empire and imprisoned in a detention facility, where he endured beatings and starvation. While captive, Sahdett was brought before the Galactic Emperor himself, forced to kneel alongside four other captured Jedi. Surrounded by Clone stormtroopers and the Emperor's Imperial Guards, Palpatine offered the Jedi their lightsabers, giving them a glimmer of hope. Palpatine ordered the captives to fight each other to the death, knowing they would instead attack him, and he laughed as all five Jedi charged at him. With a single strike of his lightsaber, he killed three of the Jedi, leaving only Sahdett and an unidentified Human Jedi alive, staring at each other in shock. Despite her hesitation, Sahdett turned on his fellow Jedi, driving his blade into her stomach, killing her and beginning his service to the Emperor.

The Dark Times

Finding the Uhumele

Four months after the Clone Wars ended, Bomo Greenbark, a former resistance fighter, was camped on the refuge planet of Kidron with the rest of the crew of the smuggling ship, the Uhumele. Greenbark, saddened by the losses he had suffered in the past four months, went for a walk in a nearby town. It was there that Sahdett found the Nosaurian and told him that they both knew Dass Jennir. Sahdett had abandoned his Jedi robes, wearing armor and carrying a blaster, but he still kept his lightsaber visible on his belt. Greenbark, regretting his earlier decision to banish Jennir from the crew because he was a Jedi fugitive, brought Sahdett back to the ship and introduced him to his crewmates. He asked them to let Sahdett join them, but their reactions were mixed, with their drunken captain, Schurk-Heren, even questioning whether Sahdett was a Jedi at all.

As Sahdett confirmed that he was indeed a Jedi, a group of stormtroopers led by an Imperial officer surrounded the camp. The Imperials knew that the Uhumele had sheltered Jennir and wanted to detain and question the crew. No one reacted as they approached, until Greenbark turned to Sahdett. Sahdett sprang into action, activating his lightsaber and placing himself between the attackers and his new companions. He quickly cut through the troopers, performing acrobatic feats and deflecting blaster bolts, as well as bisecting and beheading his enemies. In moments, he had killed a dozen stormtroopers, and when the officer fired his blaster pistol at Sahdett, the Verpine deflected it into the officer's forehead, killing him as well. With the entire squad of Imperials dead, Schurk-Heren admitted that Sahdett was indeed a Jedi.

The Search for Dass Jennir

Soon after, Sahdett and the crew left Kidron to find Jennir. After gathering information from smugglers and slavers, the group was led to Telerath, where there were rumors of a Human Jedi. Ko Vakier doubted the truth of the rumors, and Sahdett agreed that because the Empire had put a bounty on all Jedi, they were being "seen" everywhere in the galaxy. He told Vakier that they had to remain hopeful, and even if they didn't find Jennir, Sahdett was sure that Telerath would be a beautiful planet. However, as he spoke of its beauty, a group of Humans with blasters surrounded the crew and demanded to know why they were there. Captain Schurk-Heren, now sober and proud, was offended by their insults to his ship and told them that they were looking for Dass Jennir. When one of the men put his blaster to the captain's head, Sahdett began to reach for his lightsaber, but Greenbark stopped him, and the Verpine held back. As the men became angrier, saying that someone else had come looking for Jennir, they were approached by two wounded Humans—a boy named Dado and an old man named Fish. Fish immediately recognized them as friends of Jennir, especially Greenbark.

The Telerath native took the group to a former brothel called Ember's Fire, where Fish told them that he knew who they were because of their unusual mix of species and Jennir's stories, but he didn't know Sahdett. Greenbark said that Sahdett was helping them find Jennir, and the Verpine asked about the other person who had come looking for the Jedi. Fish said that the man claimed to be a friend of Jennir's, but the old man knew that wasn't true because of his appearance and bad manners, and Fish said that he would rather die than reveal where Jennir had gone. Fish and Nikollane, Dado's mother, told the group that they had formed a local militia and that everyone on the planet owed Jennir a great debt for getting rid of all the criminals, and they revealed that the Jedi had left two weeks earlier, heading to the Vondarc system.

Sahdett and the rest of the Uhumele crew then set off for Vondarc, a planet in the Mid Rim. The ship's engineer, Ratty, managed to get a new transponder that allowed them to pass through Imperial lines without being detected, as Star Destroyers patrolled the skies. Ratty and Greenbark were unsure that Jennir would land on such a planet, let alone be able to change his transponder code as they had. However, Sahdett refused to dismiss the information they had and decided that the only way to find out what happened to Jennir was to break into the local Imperial guard station and access the Imperial databanks. The crew was shocked and uncertain about this plan, but Vakier, Ratty, and Greenbark ended up going with Sahdett into the station. Sahdett had wanted to go alone, but Greenbark said that even though he was a Jedi, they should work together. They encountered and killed several stormtroopers on their way into the station, but they managed to reach the databanks without being detected. Sahdett assured the others that he knew exactly what he was doing and then told Ratty the exact access point he needed to hack into the databank. Ratty was surprised that Sahdett knew so much about the Imperial system, and Sahdett hesitated when trying to answer. However, Vakier heard someone coming, and Sahdett used his wings to fly past the others and cut down two stormtroopers who were passing by with a single swing of his lightsaber. He then returned and confidently answered Ratty's question, saying that just as the clones had been under his command, so had the computers that the Empire now used. Ratty managed to copy all of the recent reports for the entire sector, and at Sahdett's urging, the group hurried back to the Uhumele.

On the right track

Schurk-Heren was eager to escape into hyperspace as they left Vondarc in broad daylight. Meanwhile, Sahdett, Vakier, and Ratty worked to sort through the large amount of information they had stolen. Ratty proudly told Schurk-Heren that Sahdett had skillfully broken the Imperial encryption, but the Jedi dismissed this, saying that the code was not much different from the one used by the Republic. The crew discussed the different paths Jennir might take, until Ratty became sad at the memory of their friend and crewmate, Janks, who had been captured by the Empire. The Verpine coldly disregarded Ratty's feelings and Janks' fate, causing the crew to exchange concerned looks. Sahdett quickly changed the subject when he found a report that a civilian ship had been shot down, but not before destroying two Nimbus class starfighters. Greenbark questioned how this could be good news if Jennir was dead, but Sahdett pointed out that the captain who filed the report would have to explain both the destroyed fighters and the enemy ship, but would only be able to get a promotion if the enemy was also destroyed—and only a Jedi could destroy two clone starfighters in a civilian ship. Using the data they found, they followed Jennir to the planet of Prine, along the Enarc Run.

On the surface of Prine, the crew found the remains of a V-wing starfighter, showing that they were on the right track. They eventually found Jennir, unconscious from trying to heal Ember Chankeli, who had been shot in the back by Falco Sang. The crew brought the pair on board, where Sahdett finished the healing process. When Jennir woke up, he rushed to Chankeli's room, where the Verpine Jedi assured her that she was completely healed except for the scarring. Jennir immediately hugged and kissed her, completely ignoring his fellow Jedi, causing Sahdett to exchange a look with Vakier. Schurk-Heren then cleared the room to give Jennir and Chankeli some privacy.

Shortly after, Jennir confronted Schurk-Heren about going back to help Maddie, which the captain thought was impossible. The conversation then turned to Darth Vader, who had been pursuing them, as well as Sahdett himself, whom Jennir didn't know. Schurk-Heren explained that he was another Jedi and had assumed Jennir would have known him. Jennir explained that there had been thousands of Jedi, and while they might have met before, he didn't remember. Greenbark then told Jennir how they had met Sahdett and how he had saved them from Imperials, and that the Verpine had "Jedi matters" to discuss, which Jennir was happy to do.

Betrayal and Death

After arriving on Kestavel to meet with Jennir's contact, Kai Hudorra, Sahdett was lured into a trap by the pair, who had sensed his true allegiances. The two Jedi attacked the Verpine, but the fallen Jedi managed to escape through a window. However, the Verpine's skills were impressive, and the battle began to turn in his favor as he pushed the Bothan away and forced Jennir to the ground. Mezgraf and Vakier arrived and tried to distract him, but Sahdett quickly sliced off the former's right forearm and impaled the latter, enjoying his kill.

Sahdett is killed by Vader.

After more intense fighting in the casino and guards Makall and Urtsk being sliced in half, Bomo Greenbark tried to shoot Sahdett with his blaster, but the Verpine deflected the shots with his lightsaber. This gave Jennir the opportunity to act and attack Sahdett. When Sahdett was about to kill him, Hudorra arrived in time and used the Force to throw the Verpine into a wall, knocking him unconscious. A little later, Sahdett woke up as Jennir and Hudorra began to interrogate him. Sahdett revealed the truth about his capture and how he was seduced by the Emperor. He also told the Jedi that he had contacted Palpatine's apprentice, Darth Vader, who was already on his way to Kestavel. Hudorra then activated his lightsaber and sliced off Sahdett's antennae so he couldn't contact his master. Sahdett was left as a distraction for Vader; tied up and gagged to prevent him from warning anyone about the ambush being set up by the crew of the Uhumele and the staff of the The Lucky Twi'lek, Vader would sense his Force presence but mistake it for Jennir's. After telling Vader that his role for Palpatine was to eliminate Jedi in his place, the Sith Lord decapitated Sahdett.

Behind the scenes

Sahdett first appeared as an unnamed Verpine Jedi in Republic 79, drawn by Douglas Wheatley, in a montage showing Jedi responding to Order 66. Another Verpine Jedi appeared in Dark Times 16, where he was revealed to be Beyghor Sahdett. Although this Verpine Jedi was also drawn by Doug Wheatley, it wasn't confirmed that the two were the same until Randy Stradley, the Dark Horse Comics editor, confirmed the connection on the Dark Horse forums. Sahdett has red eyes in Dark Times, but black eyes in his initial appearance in Republic.
