Chatterbox was the sarcastic name bestowed upon a quiet clone trooper from Breakout Squad during the era of the Clone Wars. Initially identified only as CT-5177, he participated in the Mission to Kynachi. His reserved nature, marked by a near-complete absence of speech, prompted a fellow trooper to joke that Chatterbox would easily win a silence competition against Knuckles, noting that he didn't even snore. Alongside comrades Breaker, Sharp, and Knuckles, he was a member of the renowned Breakout Squad, under the leadership of Jedi Padawan Nuru Kungurama. During a diplomatic mission into Chiss space, freighter pilot Lalo Gunn grew fond of him. Subsequently, they found themselves trapped by a black hole but managed to escape through the use of an ancient artifact. Following this, Breakout Squad, including Chatterbox, journeyed to Vaced, where an imagecaster directed them to Bilbringi Depot. It was there that he sustained a gunshot wound from a B1-Series battle droid. Breakout Squad then made their way back to Coruscant. Their subsequent assignment involved escorting a freighter to Fondor, followed by the rescue of younglings from pirates on Foless.
CT-5177, later known as Chatterbox, was a clone trooper within the Galactic Republic, serving as a soldier in the Grand Army of the Republic and being a clone derived from the Human bounty hunter Jango Fett. His height was 1.83 meters during the Clone Wars. In 21 BBY, Chatterbox participated in the mission to Kynachi, under the command structure of Jedi Master Ring-Sol Ambase and Captain Lock. Their transport fell victim to an ambush, leading to Lock's demise and Ambase's disappearance. Chatterbox and his fellow clones, in conjunction with the Jedi Padawan Nuru Kungurama, regrouped and successfully liberated the planet from the occupying forces of the Techno Union and Overseer Umbrag. Subsequently, the clones became recognized as the Breakout Squad. The squad managed to secure transport from Captain Lalo Gunn aboard her ship, the Hasty Harpy.
Acting on directives from Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, Breakout Squad journeyed to the Chiss Ascendancy to attend a meeting at Defense Force Station Ifpe'a. There, they encountered Aristocra Sev'eere'nuruodo and rescued her from an assault by the Techno Union. After escaping into hyperspace, they were ensnared near a black hole alongside Hethra Mcgrrrr's pirate gang. Kungurama and Breakout Squad discovered an ancient Infinity Gate with a pair of Sullustan xenoarchaeologists. During this mission, Chatterbox developed a close bond with Captain Gunn.
While en route to Coruscant, Breakout Squad received communication from Chancellor Palpatine, instructing them to divert to Vaced to meet with Kynachi's Commissioner Langu Sommilor. The Commissioner was assassinated shortly after their arrival. Chatterbox and Breakout Squad gave chase to the sniper. They boarded Gunn's ship and engaged with the sniper's transport, resulting in both ships crashing and the apparent death of the sniper. Gunn and Breakout Squad parted ways, but not before she shared a kiss with Chatterbox. Kungurama located an imagecaster, which led Breakout Squad to commandeer Sommilor's freighter to Bilbringi Depot, where they once again clashed with Umbrag. They liberated the depot from the droid forces, but a final battle droid shot Chatterbox in the back.
Breakout Squad concluded their investigation of the Depot, uncovering that the Sommilor who had been killed on Vaced was an impostor; the real Sommilor was rescued from captivity within the freighter's hold. Clone medics arrived and stabilized Chatterbox, with the members of Breakout Squad donating blood, with the exception of Sharp. They then returned to Coruscant, intending to bring Chatterbox to the Jedi Temple for medical attention. However, Jedi Master Harro Kelpura ordered the freighter to redirect to his lab in Dacho District, which had been burglarized. The ship then sustained damage from a collision with another dropship, which crashed but managed to take off and escape. After Kungurama confronted his missing master, Ambase, Chatterbox was returned to the Temple for care. He recovered in time for Breakout Squad to investigate the disappearances related to the Spice Siren.
Breakout Squad's subsequent assignment involved escorting Noggox the Hutt's freighter to Fondor. Upon arriving at the rendezvous point on Affa, they discovered a massacre, but they proceeded with their mission to Fondor, where they defeated the pirate Dool Pundar. Once there, their ally Gizz befriended a blind Twi'lek, Kuvuta Pindi. Kungurama agreed to assist her in escorting orphaned younglings to Foless. Upon arrival, they discovered that Pindi was attempting to steal the orphans, and gave chase. They apprehended Pundar and freed the younglings, but Pindi was killed.
Chatterbox made an appearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Secret Missions, a series for young readers by Ryder Windham. He and Breakout Squad were initially depicted in the comic The Clone Wars: Opress Unleashed, which was released in 2011 as part of Free Comic Book Day and later included in the comic The Clone Wars: Strange Allies.
