Dooku's lightsaber

The lightsaber of Dooku, also known by the names Darth Tyranus' lightsaber and Dooku's Sith lightsaber, was the personal curved-hilt lightsaber belonging to Dooku, who held the title of Count of Serenno. This former Jedi Master, who transitioned into Darth Tyranus and became the political leader of the Separatist Alliance, fashioned the weapon's distinct hilt utilizing a kyber crystal that generated a red blade. As the apprentice serving under the Dark Lord of the Sith, Darth Sidious, Dooku wielded this Sith weapon against his adversaries.

This weapon was specifically constructed for the purpose of lightsaber combat, and the Sith Lord carried it into numerous engagements during the Clone Wars against the Jedi Order; a conflict that he and his master carefully planned and executed from opposing sides. During his final bout, Dooku was disarmed of his Sith lightsaber by Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker upon his defeat in a duel occurring on board the starship known as the Invisible Hand. Skywalker then proceeded to use Dooku's own weapon to behead the Sith Lord, thus ending his life.

Description

Dooku's curved-hilt lightsaber featured a red blade after becoming Darth Tyranus.

During his time as a Jedi Master, Dooku chose to replace the first lightsaber he had utilized as a Padawan with an improved model. This new lightsaber featured a personalized design, distinct from both his master, Yoda, and the prevailing styles of that time. Dooku thoroughly examined records within the Jedi Archives to inform the design, ensuring the lightsaber complemented his unique technique, which emphasized long, graceful movements and manual dexterity. He continued employing this blade even after his transformation into a Sith, albeit with minor aesthetic modifications to the hilt. Consequently, his lightsaber began to emit a red-colored blade, a direct result of Dooku's use of a red kyber crystal provided by his new master, Darth Sidious.

In contrast to standard lightsabers, Dooku's was uniquely crafted with a curved shape, which aided in weapon control during a duel. This curvature primarily allowed Dooku to achieve enhanced finesse and precision in combat when executing lunges or slashes against an opponent. Dooku implemented this design because he considered himself a highly refined duelist, frequently capable of wielding his lightsaber single-handedly, even against multiple adversaries.

History

Jedi Master Dooku was a skilled lightsaber duelist who learned the Jedi arts from Grand Master Yoda.

As was sometimes the case within the Jedi Order, Jedi Master Dooku opted to set aside the first lightsaber he had previously used as a Padawan. Dooku desired to create a superior lightsaber, and after extensive study of the Jedi Archives to inform the design, the Jedi Master commissioned his personalized weapon. His lightsaber bore no resemblance to the prevailing fashion of the era, nor did it resemble the weapon of his master, Yoda, who wielded a shoto. This lightsaber was specifically tailored to complement his fighting style, emphasizing graceful, extended movements and exceptional manual dexterity. The lightsaber emitted a blue hue, and Dooku even engaged in duels with Yoda using this weapon. However, Dooku would eventually depart from the Jedi Order prior to the Invasion of Naboo, during which his former Padawan, Qui-Gon Jinn, met his demise. Although Dooku offered to relinquish the lightsaber to the Jedi, Yoda encouraged him to retain it.

Dooku continued to wield the blade even after his transformation into a Sith. The blade maintained its blue color during his duel with and subsequent killing of Master Yaddle, solidifying his newfound allegiance to the Dark Side.

During the galactic conflict known as the Clone Wars, the weapon's color shifted to red due to the incorporation of a red kyber crystal provided by his new master, Darth Sidious. Ten years following the Invasion of Naboo, Dooku employed his weapon at the First Battle of Geonosis against Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Yoda, marking the commencement of the Clone Wars.

Renouncing the Jedi Order, Count Dooku challenged his former master to a lightsaber duel.

Within a private hangar as he attempted to flee Geonosis, Dooku was confronted by the Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan, Anakin Skywalker. Dooku easily outmatched his opponents using his lightsaber, inflicting wounds upon both Kenobi and Skywalker, severing the latter's arm after a brief engagement. Immediately thereafter, Dooku faced his former Jedi Master, Yoda, whom Dooku was unable to overcome in combat, either through the Force or with his lightsaber, despite having challenged his former master to demonstrate his newfound power.

Hondo Ohnaka displayed Dooku's lightsaber as proof that the Count was his prisoner.

At one juncture during the Clone Wars, Kenobi and Skywalker tracked Dooku's starship in an attempt to apprehend him, but their efforts proved unsuccessful. A brief skirmish resulted in Dooku's solar sailer crash-landing on Vanqor, where the Weequay Hondo Ohnaka and his pirate gang offered him transport to Florrum. However, Ohnaka harbored no intention of aiding Dooku, instead employing the loyal Kowakian monkey-lizard Pilf Mukmuk to pilfer Dooku's lightsaber and take the Sith Lord captive. Ohnaka demanded a ransom for Dooku, presenting the unique, curved lightsaber as evidence of the Sith Lord's capture to the Republic and the Jedi—a gesture that convinced Yoda, who verified the weapon's authenticity. Dooku later retrieved his weapon and escaped Florrum.

Dooku continued to wield his Sith lightsaber throughout the Clone Wars, operating under the guise of the leader of the Separatist Alliance, leading the conflict against the Galactic Republic. Despite secretly operating under his concealed identity of Tyranus, he openly employed the Sith weapon without hesitation. Dooku used his lightsaber to kill the Gungan traitor Rish Loo in front of Skywalker on Naboo during the war, and later used his lightsaber to kill the Pyke Syndicate leader Lom Pyke in front of both Kenobi and Skywalker. It was during this mission that the Jedi realized Dooku and Tyranus were one and the same.

Dooku fought against both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker on several occasions in the Clone Wars.

Ultimately, Dooku attempted to train two Sith apprentices with the intention of overthrowing Darth Sidious and claiming the title of Dark Lord of the Sith for himself, adhering to the way of the Sith. Although he succeeded in recruiting both Asajj Ventress and Savage Opress to his cause for a period, both ultimately proved to be failures as Sith. Nevertheless, Dooku leveraged both his knowledge of the Force and his dueling prowess to train them. He also successfully trained the cyborg General Grievous in lightsaber combat. Grievous went on to kill numerous Jedi in the Clone Wars and amass their lightsabers for his collection, becoming a formidable opponent. Grievous was eventually defeated in combat by Kenobi.

During the Battle of Coruscant—which marked Dooku's final confrontation—Dooku once again faced Kenobi and Skywalker aboard Grievous' starship, the Invisible Hand, within the General's quarters. The two Jedi believed their mission was to rescue the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine, who was secretly Darth Sidious. However, Sidious' true objective was to orchestrate Dooku's sacrifice to facilitate the recruitment of Skywalker as his new apprentice.

During the Battle of Coruscant, Skywalker executed Dooku with the Sith Lord's own lightsaber.

After Dooku defeated Kenobi and rendered him unconscious, a vengeful Skywalker confronted Dooku in a duel. Despite Dooku's confidence in his lightsaber skills, believing they would be sufficient to overcome the Jedi Knight—as he had previously done on Geonosis—he was unable to match Skywalker's intensity and swiftly lost both of his hands to Skywalker's attacks. The Jedi Knight then seized Dooku's own lightsaber and, at Sidious' urging, beheaded the unarmed Count Dooku with the Sith Lord's own weapon.

Following Skywalker's escape with Kenobi and Palpatine, Dooku's lightsaber was left behind alongside Dooku's lifeless body in Grievous' quarters on the Invisible Hand. Shortly thereafter, the General's quarters were destroyed.

Behind the scenes

The late Christopher Lee, who portrayed Dooku in the Star Wars films, on the set of Episode II filming Dooku's lightsaber duel with Yoda.

Dooku's lightsaber made its debut appearance alongside Count Dooku in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, specifically in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Dooku and his weapon continued to feature in Star Wars canon through various other media, including Star Wars: The Clone Wars film, the television series of the same name, The Clone Wars Legacy, and several novels.

When developing Count Dooku, George Lucas—the creator of the Star Wars saga—envisioned an older Jedi who was "very good," "elegant," and "sophisticated." These characteristics were subsequently reflected in Dooku's portrayal and his remarkable abilities with a lightsaber. The late Christopher Lee, who played Dooku in the live-action Star Wars films, expressed that he found the role "very rewarding" and considered the action sequences from Attack of the Clones to be the most impressive he had ever participated in. Lee, a renowned sword fighting expert throughout his career, had to master new fighting styles specifically for the lightsaber sequences. Kyle Rowling served as Lee's stunt double in both Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, particularly during certain lightsaber sequences, where Rowling's face was replaced with Lee's using CGI. The distinctive curved shape of the lightsaber handle originated from earlier explorations of Sith villains. Roel Robles, an assistant in the Art Department, drew inspiration from a variety of Filipino swords, knives, and spears; the Barong, among them, featured a curved handle that provided the wielder with a more secure grip.

Initially, there were plans for Count Dooku to wield two lightsabers during his duel with Yoda in Attack of the Clones. However, this idea was ultimately abandoned as it was deemed unnecessary, although scenes were filmed, and excerpts can be found in the special features of the Attack of the Clones DVD release. In concept art for unfinished episodes of The Clone Wars Legacy, Dooku's lightsaber served as the basis for the lightsaber of Jedi Master Oppo Rancisis, who ultimately appeared in the episode "The Big Bang" without the lightsaber. The reference booklet "Lightsabers and Jedi Equipment" erroneously states that Dooku's lightsaber utilized a synthetic kyber crystal.
