Iego system

The Iego system existed within the Ash Worlds sector of the expansive Outer Rim Territories. It encompassed the planet known as Iego, along with its impressive collection of one thousand moons. During the initial stages of the Clone Wars, a conflict between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Separatists seized control of Iego. They then strategically positioned a laser web within its moons, effectively preventing anyone on the planet's surface from departing. This web remained active until the arrival of the Jedi Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, who sought the cure for the dangerous Blue Shadow Virus. After understanding the situation, they, along with the astromech droid R2-D2, employed modified vulture droids to disable the deadly security system, bringing an end to the "curse" affecting Iego.

Description

Located at grid coordinates T-7, the Iego system was found in the Ash Worlds sector, situated within both the Outer Rim Territories and the Slice regions. This system was home to the planet Iego, famously known as the "World of a Thousand Moons" due to its abundant many moons. The Diathim, a sentient species also referred to as the semi-mythical "Angels" of Iego, inhabited the moon called Millius Prime.

History

The planet Iego, part of the Iego system, gained significant recognition because of its thousand moons. Its celestial bodies were widely known throughout the galaxy, even reaching distant Outer Rim planets like Tatooine. The Angels residing there also contributed to its fame. In 32 BBY, [Anakin Skywalker](/article/anakin_skywalker], who was then a slave and grew up on Tatooine, inquired of Padmé Amidala whether she was an Angel, mentioning that he had learned about them from spacers upon their initial encounter.

During the early years of the Clone Wars, a widespread conflict spanning the galaxy between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems (from 22 BBY to 19 BBY), the Separatists briefly occupied Iego. They proceeded to construct the LaserWeb Defense Station within its moons. The primary generator for the laser web was erected on Millius Prime, displacing the Diathim from their native home. Subsequently, the Separatists abandoned Iego, leaving the security system operational. As a consequence, all those remaining on Iego were effectively trapped, unable to leave as the laser web destroyed any starship attempting to pass through. The Iegoans began to attribute their predicament to a curse supposedly cast by the mythical figure Drol.

In 21 BBY, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and his former apprentice Skywalker, now a Jedi Knight, travelled to Iego from Naboo, a planet in the Mid Rim, in search of reeksa root. This root was the only known remedy for the Blue Shadow Virus, a lethal disease to almost all lifeforms, resurrected by Doctor Nuvo Vindi, a scientist in the service of the Separatists. The virus was unleashed in Vindi's laboratory, a relic from the Trade Federation's invasion of Naboo, during Republic cleanup operations. Almost everyone trapped inside, including Senator Amidala and Skywalker's Padawan Ahsoka Tano, became infected.

Skywalker and Kenobi convinced Jaybo Hood, a resident of Cliffhold city, to guide them to the reeksa vine. However, after obtaining the root, the two Jedi were informed about the "curse of Drol" that prevented departures. Their attempt to leave in their freighter Twilight revealed the existence of the laser web. During a meeting with the citizens, Kenobi and Skywalker revealed the true nature of the threat that held them captive. Hood had salvaged numerous abandoned battle droids left by the Separatists and granted Skywalker, Kenobi, and their astromech droid R2-D2 control over several vulture droid starfighters. As Skywalker piloted the Twilight through the laser web, R2 guided the vulture droids to the generator on Millius Prime, destroying the security system. Following this, Kenobi announced to the Iegoans that they were once again free to leave their planet at will. Kenobi and Skywalker returned to Naboo with the reeksa root in time to save Amidala, Tano, and the surviving clone troopers within Vindi's laboratory.

Behind the scenes

The Iego system made its first canonically appearance in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars first season episode titled "Mystery of a Thousand Moons," which premiered on Cartoon Network on February 13, 2009. Its canonical identification occurred later in the 2022 Star Wars Encyclopedia booklet titled "Hoth and Other Planets in the Outer Rim."
