K-16 Bryar Pistol

The K-16 Bryar Pistol represented a specific model of Bryar pistol. It saw usage among soldiers belonging to the Rebel Alliance during the Galactic Civil War against the forces of the Galactic Empire. Furthermore, it was employed by criminals like Khel Tanna and also Akko. While appearing as a standard blaster pistol, the K-16 was cleverly designed with a modified power unit. This modification allowed it to unleash its entire heat source in a single, potent blast as a secondary firing mode.

Description

The K-16 Bryar Pistol looked like a common blaster pistol.

This particular model of Bryar pistol, the K-16, had the ability to fire red-colored blaster bolts. However, it was not as powerful when compared to other types of blaster pistols. Although appearing to be a relatively conventional pistol, the K-16, distinguished by its black coloring, actually contained a modified power unit. This allowed the weapon to release its entire heat reservoir into a single, deadly power blast as a secondary firing option. The K-16's barrel featured a larger middle section, which incorporated cooling vents on both sides of the weapon's frame. In addition, a trigger guard was present on the blaster pistol.

History

Khel Tanna holds Han Solo at gunpoint with a K-16.

Soldiers serving with the Alliance to Restore the Republic employed the K-16 Bryar Pistol in their fight against the Galactic Empire during the Galactic Civil War. At some point between approximately 8 BBY and 2 BBY, the scoundrel known as Khel Tanna brandished a K-16 Bryar Pistol while confronting the smuggler Han Solo aboard her starship, the Enigma Catalyst. This occurred while Tanna's crew were in the process of extracting the criminal Corbus Tyra from the Benelex Marshal Service Headquarters located on the astronomical object Paqualis III. Solo managed to disarm Tanna, taking the blaster from her hand before she could fire. However, the bounty hunter Greedo intervened, shooting Solo and leaving him unconscious on the ground.

Later, Solo's partner, the Wookiee warrior Chewbacca, acquired a K-16 Bryar Pistol. He used it to stop Marshal Buck Vancto while the Marshal was arresting Tanna and two of her crew members on board his starship on the moon Nar Shaddaa. Ultimately, Chewbacca and Vancto reached an agreement: the Marshal would be allowed to apprehend Tanna after rescuing the Wookiee's friends, Solo and the young criminal Phaedra, who were being pursued by Akko, a member of Tanna's crew, who was piloting Tanna's ship. Solo and Phaedra were forced to crash their vehicle on a nearby astronomical object, where Akko arrived shortly after. Before Akko could shoot Phaedra, Chewbacca appeared, armed with his Bryar pistol, and shot Akko's blaster—another K-16—out of his hand, saving his friends.

Chewbacca saved the young Phaedra with a K-16 Bryar Pistol.

Some years later, between 3 ABY and 4 ABY, Tanna was carrying her K-16 Bryar Pistol when she journeyed to The Haven, a space station orbiting Kligson's Moon. She was part of a group of bounty hunters led by T'onga. T'onga hoped that Tarr Kligson, a cyborg fixer residing in the station with its droid inhabitants, could repair her damaged cyborg friend, Beilert Valance. However, Kligson instead wiped Valance's memories, turning him into a mindless killing machine. In the resulting firefight, Tanna used her Bryar pistol against the droid residents of The Haven that had been corrupted by an entity known as the Scourge.

Creation and development

Concept art of the K-16 Bryar Pistol by Erik Rading

The K-16 Bryar Pistol made its initial appearance in the current Star Wars canon within the Death Star expansion pack for the video game Star Wars Battlefront, which was released in 2016. It can be unlocked through an in-game challenge called "Dark Enforcer." While the K-16 is usable by troopers from all factions, including the Galactic Empire, the Rebel Alliance, and the New Republic, the official Electronic Arts website suggests in its description that it is a weapon of the Rebel Alliance.

Erik Rading, a 3D artist, designed the K-16, drawing inspiration from the Bryar pistol featured in the Star Wars: Jedi Knight video game series within the Star Wars Legends continuity. It was first seen in the 1995 video game Star Wars: Dark Forces as the signature weapon of Kyle Katarn, the protagonist of the series. Justin Chin, the game's lead artist and story writer, named the weapon in honor of the composer Gavin Bryars.

Inspiration for Andor

Andor's MW-20 Bryar pistol (pictured) was inspired by the K-16.

The K-16 Bryar Pistol from Star Wars Battlefront also provided inspiration for the MW-20 Bryar pistol carried by Cassian Andor, the main character in the first season of Andor, a live-action Disney+ original series from 2022. The prop team, searching through existing Star Wars blasters for inspiration for Andor's sidearm, discovered the K-16. Martyn Doust, the prop master, found it to be both cool-looking and small enough to be concealed.

However, Andor's Bryar pistol received a new model number due to the additional features and design elements added by the prop designers. These included a rotating middle section that installed a new, cold barrel into the front of the weapon, which, in Doust's opinion, justified the Bryar pistol's large center section.

Star Wars: Hunters

A 2023 update to the Star Wars: Hunters arena-combat game added many new cosmetic items, among them "weapon wraps" that alter the appearance of the weapons in the game. One such item, the "Huttballer Set," gives the Pulse Blaster a new design that bears a partial resemblance to the K-16 Bryar Pistol, along with an orange and white color scheme. The blaster is wielded by Utooni, a playable character in the game who is a pair of Jawa scavengers working together.
