Kamoradon sea dragon

Kamoradon sea dragons, often shortened to just kamoradons and alternatively called saberjowls, were sizable aquatic reptiles that were native to the oceans of their planet of origin, Kamino. These six-limbed carnivores possessed exceptionally sharp teeth, which they utilized to consume prey such as smaller marine life. They were equipped with a protective shell to defend against predators, although attacks were rare, and they constructed their egg nests in the ocean's depths to deter intruders.

Kamoradons foraged for food in the waters surrounding Tipoca City on Kamino. In 19 BBY, the clones of Clone Force 99, who were on the run, attracted the attention of one of these creatures. This reptile then proceeded to assault the Kamino tube system being used by the clones to escape the bombardment of the city by the Galactic Empire, resulting in damage to the tubes and water entering the system. The kamoradon was subsequently repelled by an electrical discharge when the medical droid AZI-3 reactivated the tunnel's power supply.

The Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts droids, namely SF-R3 and CAM, were dispatched to Kamino to observe a kamoradon hatching. Using a submarine, they located a nest. The parent kamoradon of the nest attacked and pursued the submarine, yet the droids still managed to witness the hatching before the adult kamoradon propelled the submarine back up to the surface. Ardis San Tekka, a colleague of SF-R3 and CAM, later included an entry about kamoradons in her journal, sometime after the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY.

Biology and appearance

Kamoradons had a sharp snout of razor-sharp teeth.

Kamoradon sea dragons, also known as kamoradons or saberjowls, constituted a species of enormous, non-sentient reptile that could reach lengths of up to 120 meters (equivalent to 394 feet) and weigh approximately 1,000 kilograms. As aquatic beings, they navigated through the water using three pairs of flippers, each ending in five [black](/article/color] claws, and utilized their lengthy, elegant tail for both stability and as a form of offense.

Kamoradons were carnivorous predators that consumed smaller marine animals or sentient beings. They possessed elongated, pointed snouts equipped with sizable, powerful jaws and two rows of extremely sharp, irregularly sized teeth that they used to grip their prey. Their broad, flattened heads also featured a pair of blue eyes and a pink tongue. Despite the fact that few creatures were audacious enough to confront a kamoradon, these reptiles had blue-green skin on the upper sections of their bodies, serving as camouflage, along with a white underside. They also possessed a sleek gray shell on their backs, which provided extra defense against potential predators.

Kamoradon could leap from the ocean's surface.

Kamoradons laid clusters of eggs in nests situated deep beneath the water's surface, potentially containing at least eight eggs. These eggs were ovoid in shape and white in color, adorned with triangular light blue markings across their shells. Upon reaching maturity, fully developed kamoradon offspring would hatch from the eggs, immediately prepared to swim and even propel themselves above the water alongside their parent, with adults demonstrating the ability to leap entirely out of the ocean.

Behavior

Kamoradon sea dragons inhabited the oceans of their [homeworld](/article/homeworld], Kamino, where they patrolled the vicinity of Tipoca City in search of food. They concealed their eggs within the world's deepest trenches to prevent unwelcome visitors from approaching their nests and to safeguard their young.

History

Tunnel attack

A kamoradon sea dragon attacked Clone Force 99 on Kamino.

In 19 BBY, the group of fugitive clones known as the Bad Batch and the medical droid AZI-3 attracted the attention of a ravenous kamoradon while fleeing through the submerged Kamino tube system from the bombardment of Tipoca City by the Galactic Empire. Emitting a roar, the creature advanced toward the tunnel, which was vulnerable due to its lack of power. After the clones noticed its approach, the kamoradon charged at the transparent tunnel, halting just before colliding with it and trailing behind the clones as they proceeded. Subsequently, the reptile struck its side against the tunnel, causing cracks to emerge in the glass.

AZI-3 then flew ahead and located a power port. However, as he attempted to activate it, the kamoradon repeatedly seized the tunnel in its jaws, inflicting further damage that resulted in water seeping into the structure. Once the droid successfully activated the port, power was restored to the tunnel, allowing the kamoradon to receive an electrical shock while biting into the structure. The creature released the tunnel and roared as the electricity surged through its mouth before dissipating. Consequently, the deterred predator retreated from the tunnel into the ocean, enabling Clone Force 99 to escape.

Creature enthusiasts

The Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts sent droids to locate a kamoradon nest.

Due to the great depths at which kamoradons deposited their eggs, no one had previously managed to descend far enough to witness a hatching event. This changed when the Galactic Society of Creature Enthusiasts droids, SF-R3 and CAM, were dispatched in a submarine to record footage of a hatching. As the submarine approached a nest, the kamoradon parent of the clutch bumped into the vessel as the vehicle's sensors detected its proximity. The kamoradon then rammed the submarine with greater force, propelling it onto the seafloor. The vessel came to a stop facing the nest of kamoradon eggs, which were among the largest eggs that SF-R3 had ever encountered. As SF-R3 discussed the eggs and CAM recorded, the kamoradon parent approached the submarine from behind, causing it to turn and face the creature just as it roared.

Piloting the submersible away from the kamoradon, SF-R3 noticed one of the eggs hatching and turned back to rush to the nest, narrowly avoiding the adult kamoradon's closing jaws. The creature then chased the submarine back and forth around the egg until the infant kamoradon emerged from it, at which point the adult grabbed the submarine in its jaws and began shaking it around. To try and escape, SF-R3 activated the submarine's thrusters, which blasted down onto the remaining eggs and caused them to hatch as well.

SF-R3 and CAM witnessed a kamoradon sea dragon hatching.

Distracted by the sudden emergence of infants, the parent kamoradon hurled the submarine up to the ocean's surface, where SF-R3 began delivering a monologue to conclude the footage they had captured. The parent kamoradon and several of the infants then leapt from the waves near the submarine, triggering its alarms and crashing down into the surface of the water nearby. The two droids' colleague Ardis San Tekka included an illustrated entry on kamoradons in her journal at some point after the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY.

Behind the scenes

Naming

A kamoradon sea dragon made its initial appearance in "Kamino Lost," the sixteenth episode of the first season of the animated television series Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which was broadcast on August 13, 2021. This creature was a new design created specifically for the series, with artist Jason Pichon producing four pieces of concept art for the species on June 16, 2020. Although the creature remained unidentified in the episode, it was first designated as a saberjowl in the track "Saberjowl Attack" from volume two of the season's soundtrack, which was released on August 20, 2021.

Jason Pichon created concept art of the kamoradon sea dragon.

By January 18, 2023, the name Kamoradon had initially surfaced on the StarWarsKids.com promotional page for Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures, advertising an upcoming episode in the show's second season. The episode itself was then released on January 31 of that year, bearing the title "Kamoradon Sea Dragon," although this was later shortened to simply "Kamoradon." The episode also established the use of the lowercase kamoradon, with the 2024 reference book Star Wars Bestiary, Vol. 1: Creatures of the Galaxy being the first to use the full "kamoradon sea dragon" in lowercase.

The saberjowl designation originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it also referred to a Kamino sea creature, albeit one with a distinct eel-like design that was established to have been cloned from the colo claw fish. The Legends iteration of the creature appeared unidentified in the fiftieth issue of the comic series Star Wars: Republic, in a segment written by John Ostrander and illustrated by Jan Duursema. This comic was released by Dark Horse Comics on February 26, 2003. The creature was subsequently identified for the first time in the 2004 Star Wars Roleplaying Game supplement Geonosis and the Outer Rim Worlds, published by Wizards of the Coast.

Bestiary

Iris Compiet illustrated kamoradon sea dragons for the Star Wars Bestiary.

The Bestiary was authored by S.T. Bende and illustrated by Iris Compiet. When Bende and the book's editor, Sammy Holland, began working on the book in 2022, they compiled a spreadsheet containing approximately four hundred potential creatures for inclusion in the Bestiary. The kamoradon section was among those that made it into the initial draft and survived subsequent cuts to be included in the final selection of one hundred and thirty creatures.

The book entered production in 2023, with Compiet utilizing acrylic, gouache, and watercolor paints for the illustrations of the kamoradon and other creatures. In an effort to emulate the style in which San Tekka would have drawn in-universe, the artist employed traditional techniques when creating the artwork and produced several sketches for each entry. The final selection of images used in the book was then made by the Lucasfilm Story Group.
