Marrok's lightsaber

The Inquisitor known as Marrok, formerly the First Brother, wielded a red double-bladed spinning lightsaber referred to as Marrok's lightsaber. After becoming a mercenary around 9 ABY, Marrok continued his use of the lightsaber. The saber had the ability to alternate between a single blade (crescent mode) and a double-bladed disk mode. When not actively using it, Marrok secured the lightsaber to the upper back area of his armor. On the Core Worlds planet Corellia, Marrok employed the lightsaber against the Jedi Ahsoka Tano; his final use of the lightsaber was on the planet Seatos, where Tano defeated the former Inquisitor in battle.

Description

This double-bladed spinning lightsaber, known as Marrok's lightsaber, could be switched between a single-bladed configuration, also known as crescent mode, and a double-bladed configuration, also known as disk mode. The saber's hilt was cylindrical and featured an emitter ring with two barbs on each side. Inside Marrok's lightsaber were two kyber crystals which produced red blades. He carried the saber in crescent mode, attached to the upper back of his armor.

History

From Inquisitor to mercenary

Marrok and his lightsaber in Fortress Inquisitorius

During 19 BBY, the First Brother, a member of the Galactic Empire's Inquisitorius, carried the saber partially concealed beneath his cloak on his back within Fortress Inquisitorius, which served as the headquarters for the Inquisitors. Inside the fortress, Marrok encountered Darth Vader, the Sith Lord who was the master of the Inquisitorius. Around 9 ABY, the First Brother, now a mercenary named Marrok working for the Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth, took his saber with him when he joined fellow mercenaries Shin Hati and Baylan Skoll on the planet Arcana to search the remains of the Nightsisters' Temple.

Later, at Facility 301G on Corellia, a Core Worlds planet, Marrok confronted the former Jedi Ahsoka Tano with his lightsaber activated in crescent mode, accompanied by an HK-87 assassin droid. The two engaged Tano in combat, with Marrok both attacking and defending with his lightsaber. Tano blocked Marrok's attacks with her lightsabers during the fight before pushing him away. Marrok and the droid then trapped Tano's lightsabers with their weapons, using this to try to force her into a nearby trench. However, Tano escaped and disabled the assassin droid. While attacking Marrok, the Jedi used the droid's body as a shield, and Marrok further damaged the droid.

After a brief pause, Marrok activated the second blade of his lightsaber and renewed his fight with Tano. The Jedi once again trapped one of his blades between her two sabers and used the Force push to move the Inquisitor away. After Marrok received a signal through his gauntlet, he switched his saber to disk mode and threw the spinning saber at the Jedi while fleeing. Tano jumped over the lightsaber and gave chase. Marrok jumped aboard khis escape shuttle and recalled his saber. Tano angled out of the saber's path as it returned to Marrok's hand, who deactivated it.

Gathering dust on Seatos

Marrok carried his lightsaber while piloting his Fiend fighter to guard the hyperspace transport ring, the Eye of Sion, which was positioned above the planet Seatos. After Tano's T-6 shuttle T-6 1974 evaded his starfighter and entered a forest on the planet, Marrok brought the lightsaber to a meeting with Elspeth, Hati, and Skoll at the planet's reflex point. Skoll then ordered Hati and Marrok to engage Tano and her former apprentice Sabine Wren, who were the shuttle's crew.

After the two mercenaries blocked Tano and Wren, the group separated, with Hati fighting Wren and Marrok fighting Tano. Marrok faced Tano, activating his blades and circling the Jedi. The former Inquisitor began the fight, spinning his saber and using both blades to attack Tano from different directions, but the Jedi blocked every attack. Tano eventually raised her saber above her head and waited for Marrok to attack. Marrok responded by holding out his hilt and rotating the twin blades around the emitter ring faster and faster. As Marrok prepared to strike the Jedi, Tano dodged and sliced his chest. The lightsaber's rotation slowed, and the wounded Inquisitor fell to his knees. Shortly after, the blades went out, and Marrok died, dropping the lightsaber.

Behind the scenes

Marrok's lightsaber was displayed at San Diego Comic-Con 2023.

The debut of Marrok's lightsaber occurred in "Part One: Master and Apprentice," the opening episode of Ahsoka's first season, which was broadcast on Disney+ on August 22, 2023. A preview of the lightsaber was included in the initial trailer for Ahsoka, which premiered during Lucasfilm's Studio Showcase at Celebration Europe on April 7 in 2023. Subsequently, the trailer was shown during the Celebration livestream and uploaded to the Star Wars YouTube channel. A StarWars.com article, published on July 21, 2023, that detailed the Lucasfilm Pavilion at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, where the lightsaber was exhibited, first identified it as "Marrok's lightsaber." Josh Roth, the property master, was responsible for creating the hilt.

Brian Matyas, who was part of the Ahsoka concept team, created concept art of Marrok wielding the lightsaber in 2021. Originally scheduled for October 3, 2024, Marrok and his lightsaber were intended to be added to the video game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes—which initially launched on November 24, 2015—but the release was postponed to October 8 because of a problem. CG_Guardian, who designed Marrok, found the way he spun his lightsaber "cool and interesting." The spinning also inspired the Galaxy of Heroes team, so they included it in his abilities.
