Biography

Imperial Inquisitor

Marrok was once an Inquisitor who served the Galactic Empire during the Imperial Era.

Marrok was a male humanoid who began his journey within the ranks of the Jedi Order. With few exceptions, Sith Lord Darth Sidious issued Order 66, a command that led to the death of almost all Jedi at the end of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY. This conflict pitted the Galactic Republic against the Confederacy of Independent Systems, and its conclusion paved the way for Sidious' Empire. While Order 66 was devastatingly effective, it didn't eliminate every Jedi completely, so Sidious initiated his long-prepared Inquisitorius program to continue the Great Jedi Purge. Marrok was one of those chosen to join the Galactic Empire as an Inquisitor. Given the designation First Brother, his mission was to hunt down the Jedi who had managed to survive during the Imperial Era.

Early in the Imperial Era, in 19 BBY, Marrok found himself on the ocean moon Nur, specifically inside the still-under-construction Fortress Inquisitorius. Here, he met with the Grand Inquisitor, the Inquisitorius' leader, along with other Inquisitors like ex-Jedi Barriss Offee, the Fourth Sister, and the Eleventh Brother. One stormy day, after Offee's training, the Grand Inquisitor invited Marrok and the others into the audience chamber. They passed Purge Troopersclone troopers used by the Inquisitorius as disposable death squads—on their way. Marrok, along with the others, lined up before the Grand Inquisitor, and after a nod, Marrok knelt second, following the Eleventh Brother.

Marrok and Eleventh Brother were the first to kneel in preparation for the arrival of Darth Vader, leader of the Inquisitorius.

With all four kneeling, the Grand Inquisitor announced the arrival of their new master: Sith Lord Darth Vader, Sidious' Sith apprentice, instructor to the Inquisitors, and leader of the Inquisitorius by Sidious' decree. Once Vader sat on his throne, even the Grand Inquisitor knelt. Standing, the Grand Inquisitor invited the others to rise, acknowledging them as Inquisitors. Marrok was the second to stand, following the Eleventh Brother, and remained silent as the Grand Inquisitor and Offee chanted "Long live the Empire." As an Inquisitor, Marrok carried out his organization's mission to hunt down and eliminate the Jedi for the Empire and the Sith. The Inquisitorius' actions reduced the number of Jedi survivors during Sidious' reign as Galactic Emperor. However, their success led Sidious to deem them obsolete, viewing them as expendable. The Empire eventually fell to the New Republic after Sidious and Vader died during the Galactic Civil War.

Morgan Elsbeth's mercenary

Searching for the map to Peridea

By the time of the New Republic, Marrok had become a mercenary in Morgan Elsbeth's forces.

Marrok continued his activities into the New Republic Era. In 9 ABY, he was employed as a mercenary by Morgan Elsbeth, a Nightsister from Dathomir. Elsbeth aimed to free her master and Vader’s old ally Grand Admiral Thrawn from his exile in a faraway galaxy. Marrok collaborated with former Jedi General Baylan Skoll and his apprentice Shin Hati, all Force-sensitive mercenaries in Elsbeth's forces. Elsbeth sought a star map with the location of Peridea, a planet in the galaxy where Thrawn was held.

With Marrok, Skoll, and Hati, Elsbeth tracked the map to the ruins of a Nightsister stronghold on Arcana. After arriving, Marrok and Skoll searched the surroundings. Skoll suggested to Elsbeth that the map was either taken by former Jedi Ahsoka Tano or destroyed in an explosion. Elsbeth revealed that Tano’s apprentice Sabine Wren possessed it and instructed Skoll to send Hati to Lothal to retrieve it. Marrok observed as Elsbeth departed. Skoll explained the mission to Hati, who questioned Elsbeth's motives, before leaving for Lothal. Marrok then approached Skoll, and they both followed Elsbeth.

Duel on Corellia

Marrok challenged Ahsoka Tano to a duel while his allies secured a hyperdrive core for the Eye of Sion.

While Hati went after the star map, Marrok was dispatched on a mission to Corellia to seize a Super Star Destroyer's hyperdrive core for Elsbeth's hyperspace transport ring, the Eye of Sion. Tano and General Hera Syndulla attempted to thwart the theft, leading Marrok to directly confront Tano as Elsbeth's forces escaped with the hyperdrive on Transport CT-O5. In their initial encounter, Marrok battled the former Jedi in a fierce lightsaber duel, wielding his red double-bladed spinning lightsaber against Tano's white lightsabers. An HK-87 assassin droid aided Marrok until Tano destroyed the droid. Marrok continued the duel, activating the second plasma blade of his lightsaber.

Marrok broke off the duel once his allies successfully left the facility at the Corellian shipyard with the hyperdrive core. Hati then arrived in her master's Eta-class shuttle to extract Marrok, using the shuttle's weapons to delay Tano, allowing Marrok to reach the vessel before the Jedi could intercept him.

Pursuit above Seatos

Marrok and Shin Hati led the starfighter attack on Tano's starship near Seatos in the Denab system.

With Syndulla's assistance, Tano and Wren tracked the transport to the Denab system. Elsbeth deployed a starfighter squadron, led by Hati and Marrok, to destroy Tano's T-6 shuttle. Despite some scout guards being killed during the dogfight in space, Tano's starship was damaged, forcing it to land on the planet Seatos.

Like dust in the wind

Marrok and Tano battled each other a final time in the forests of Seatos.

As the Eye of Sion downloaded the star map's coordinates to Peridea, Elsbeth and Skoll sent their scout guards into a forest on Seatos where Tano and Wren had landed. Knowing the guards wouldn't last long against a Jedi, Skoll ordered Hati to confront Tano and her Mandalorian apprentice. Marrok joined Hati in the forest, blocking Tano and Wren's path to the star map. While Wren and Hati fought, Tano and Marrok ignited their lightsabers, circling each other before engaging. After exchanging blows, Marrok spun his blades, preparing to attack. As they advanced, Tano slashed through Marrok's armor, releasing a dark green mist and a piercing shriek. Marrok's armor fell to the ground as he perished.

Personality and traits

Marrok was an enigmatic warrior who once hunted Jedi for the Galactic Empire. After the Empire's collapse, the former Inquisitor became a mercenary, performing "dark deeds" for Morgan Elsbeth. He followed orders and went where he was sent; Baylan Skoll trusted Marrok's abilities, recommending him to Elsbeth. Marrok also obeyed Shin Hati's commands while serving under her in the Denab system. As a warrior, Marrok challenged Ahsoka Tano to duels twice: first with an assassin droid on Corellia, and then alone on Seatos, where he was defeated. His body was completely covered by his armor, and a green mist erupted from the slice made by Tano's lightsaber.

Powers and abilities

Marrok was Force-sensitive and skilled in lightsaber combat, capable of fighting Ahsoka Tano on even terms. The former Inquisitor had Force powers like telekinesis, using it to retrieve his lightsaber after throwing it at Tano. He was also a skilled pilot, able to navigate through swarms of purrgil. As an Inquisitor, Marrok was experienced in hunting Jedi.

Equipment

Marrok was an armored warrior who wielded a double-bladed spinning lightsaber.

Marrok's lightsaber was a double-bladed spinning lightsaber, also known as an Inquisitor lightsaber, with red plasma blades at each end of its circular hilt. This design enhanced the wielder's combat effectiveness. While similar to Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsaber, Marrok's lightsaber, and those used by other Inquisitors, had an emitter ring that could rotate the blades rapidly around the hilt.

The former Inquisitor continued to use his red-bladed lightsaber as a mercenary. In duels with Tano, Marrok switched between single and double-blade configurations, adjusting his fighting style. He also used the rotating blades in both duels. Additionally, Marrok wore full-body battle armor with a face-concealing black helmet and a black cape, which he removed during battle. By the New Republic Era, the armor was worn and rusted.

Marrok's Fiend fighter was a starfighter he used as a mercenary for Elsbeth. It was the same model as Shin Hati's Fiend. During the attack on Tano's T-6 shuttle in the Denab system, Marrok flew his starfighter as part of Hati's squadron.

Behind the scenes

Marrok debuted in "Part One: Master and Apprentice," the first episode of the Ahsoka series, written and directed by Dave Filoni and released on Disney+ on August 22, 2023. Paul Darnell portrayed the character. The name "First Brother" was added to Marrok's Databank page in November, 2024.

In Arthurian legend, Marrok is a knight transformed into a werewolf by his wife, who learned the magic from the witch Morgan Le Fay. In Ahsoka, "Morgan" is Marrok's employer, a witch from Dathomir. The wolf theme connects Marrok to Shin Hati and Baylan Skoll, fellow dark-side users whose last names are shared with wolves from Norse mythology.
