TUG-b13

Designated as the TUG-b13, but also known as the quadrijet transfer spacetug and more frequently called the quadjumper, this spacetug was a product of Sublights Products Corporation. Roughly thirty years following the Battle of Endor, a quadjumper was present at Niima Outpost. Rey and Finn had intentions to utilize it for escape from the First Order's assault, but before they could reach the ship, it was obliterated by a strafing attack.

The SubPro Corporation-manufactured quadrijet transfer spacetug was a spacetug type designed for orbital transfer yards. These craft employed magnetic clamps to secure themselves to the bottoms of cargo containers, facilitating swift relocation within the yards using their quartet of substantial thrusters. This service was indispensable, considering that each second spent on cargo container movement translated to credits lost for the transfer yard's supervisor. Furthermore, the majority of bulk freighter captains lacked the necessary equipment to transport their cargo across the final few kilometers from their ships to their customers. The vessel had a length of 7.98 meters, required a single pilot for operation, and accommodated two passengers. Entry and exit were facilitated via a rear hatch, positioned between the four thrusters at the ship's rear, accessible via a retractable ladder stored beneath the cabin. A hatch locking claw ensured the hatch's seal during flight.

The quadjumper's four cylindrical thrusters featured engine intakes at the spacetug's front, equipped with electrostatic baffle vanes to exclude dust. Behind these were compressor blades, forming the turbine engines employed for atmospheric flight. These connected to a central thrust nozzle located at the rear of the engine. The thruster's ignition chamber and fuel atomizer were situated behind the blades, while the ion drives used for space flight were at the thruster's rear. These activated once thrust bypass doors opened as the craft left the atmosphere. These connected to an outer thrust ring running around the turbine engine's central nozzle. Coolant pumps and lines, in addition to the vessel's power cells, were also situated at the rear, contained within the engine's casing alongside the ion engines. The vehicle lacked any armaments, but could be easily modified with additions to the dorsal attachment points including weaponry, sensor packages or external fuel tanks. Special modifications were needed to increase cargo or fuel capacity.

The upper pair of thrusters were partly shielded by red heat exchanger plates, and all four incorporated repulsor stabilizer vanes. The quadjumper's hydraulic landing gear was integrated into the craft's base, emerging between the two lowest thrusters. Above the vessel's cockpit, the spacetug featured a tow cable housed underneath the rear hatch at the back of the ship. The bow cockpit itself was designed to give the single pilot maximum visibility and so consisted of almost entirely transparisteel viewports. Two passenger seats were situated behind the pilot's seat and could be folded away to facilitate movement between the cabin and the cockpit. The cabin occupied the central area between the four thrusters, positioned above the vehicle's fuel tank. It contained at least one crew bunk built into the side walls and had hatches at either end leading to the cockpit and exiting the ship. A retractable cargo crane was concealed directly above the cabin on the roof of the ship and could be used to guide a refueling hose that was housed with it. The magnetic clamps employed to secure the vessel to freight containers were located above the tug's cockpit.

History

The Quadjumper owned by Unkar Plutt

In 5 BBY, a quadjumper was utilized by two Keredian fishermen for fishing squigglies on the moon Narkina 5. This particular Quadjumper differed significantly from the standard TUG-b13, being notably smaller. Instead of the standard rear access hatch reached by ladder, this Quadjumper was equipped with a humanoid sized rear door and boarding ramp which required the lower engines to be spaced much further apart. Cassian Jeron Andor and Ruescott Melshi attempted to commandeer the craft following their escape from the Narkina 5 Imperial Prison Complex, but the Keredians ensnared them in a net, contemplating handing them over to the Imperials. However, Andor and Melshi successfully appealed to their animosity towards the Empire, which had irreversibly contaminated the moon's waters, hindering their fishing activities. Consequently, the quartet departed the moon aboard the jumper.

Circa 9 ABY, a quadjumper was situated near the city on the volcanic planet Nevarro, where Din Djarin, the Mandalorian bounty hunter, had parked the Razor Crest before entering the city.

Approximately thirty years after the Battle of Endor, a group of junk haulers, who supplemented their income as gunrunners, operated an unmodified quadjumper within the Western Reaches bordering the Unknown Regions. Unkar Plutt, a junk dealer, intended to acquire the vessel, hinting at ambiguous plans for generating substantial profits with it. While the transaction was pending, the ship remained parked in Bay 3 of Niima Outpost on the desert planet Jakku. During the attack on the outpost by the First Order, who were pursuing the defector stormtrooper Finn and the Resistance astromech droid BB-8, Finn, BB-8, and the scavenger Rey attempted to reach the quadjumper to make their escape. Before they could get to the ship, it was destroyed by TIE/fo space superiority fighters launched from the Resurgent-class Star Destroyer Finalizer. The destruction of the vessel forced the three to instead board the YT-1300 light freighter known as the Millennium Falcon, which was parked in one of the outpost's other two bays.

In 35 ABY, quadjumpers were part of a fleet organized by Lando Calrissian to aid the Resistance during the battle against the Sith Eternal forces above the planet Exegol.

Behind the scenes

The quadrijet transfer spacetug made its initial appearance in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, where it was simply referred to as a quadjumper. Its complete designation was subsequently revealed in Star Wars: The Force Awakens: Incredible Cross-Sections, a reference book authored by Jason Fry and illustrated by Kemp Remillard, released a day after the film's 2015 debut.
