Ring of Kafrene

The Ring of Kafrene, sometimes shortened to Kafrene, functioned as a mining settlement and a remote space trading hub situated within the Kafrene asteroid belt of the Thand sector. The Alliance to Restore the Republic dispatched intelligence operative Cassian Andor to this location before the commencement of the Galactic Civil War. It was there that Andor became aware of the Death Star's existence.

Characteristics

The interior cityscape of the Ring of Kafrene

The Ring of Kafrene was a significant construction that operated as both a mining facility and a distant trading station. Its structures, composed of durasteel and plastoid, were suspended between a couple of misshapen planetoids located in the Kafrene asteroid belt. Some areas, like its rear docking bay, were adorned with vibrant, glowing graffiti. Roads stretched from the docking areas toward the distant rocky mazes of the planetoids, and the outpost itself was a sprawling network of shacks, prefabricated homes, and numerous maze-like passages. While the buildings around the main thoroughfares had some semblance of order, beyond these zones, the Ring's layout shifted almost daily; shacks were constructed from sheet metal, and shelters utilized housing modules salvaged from other colonies. Extraterrestrial housing blocks and tenements had ventilation systems that released plumes of ammonia into the streets. The Ring served as a connection point between the Corellian Trade Spine—linking it to the worlds of Coruscant and Anoat—and the Biox Detour, which connected it to the planets Takodana and Malastare.

History

Cassian Andor and Tivik meeting on the Ring of Kafrene

Members of the aristocracy from the Galactic Republic erected the Ring of Kafrene, originally intending it to be a mining colony for extracting valuable minerals from the asteroids and planetoids of the Kafrene asteroid belt. However, the founders soon discovered that these sought-after minerals were scarce within the Kafrene belt, and the unsuccessful mining operation transitioned into a trading hub and a waypoint for desperate travelers traversing the Thand sector. The Galactic Empire maintained a presence on Kafrene, with Imperial stormtroopers patrolling the streets.

Before the Liberation of Erso on Wobani, the Alliance to Restore the Republic dispatched Cassian Andor to the Ring of Kafrene to investigate the reason Imperial shipments of kyber crystals were being transported across the galaxy. In section nine, Cassian encountered Tivik, an informant who revealed the existence of a "planet-killer"—referring to the Death Star—before stormtroopers confronted them. Cassian eliminated the stormtroopers, then executed Tivik when he became a liability, before escaping the area.

Han Solo leaves the Ring of Kafrene

Around the same time that the Rebel Alliance celebrated their navy at the Mako-Ta Space Docks, Han Solo, accompanied by Chewbacca and C-3PO, was on the Ring of Kafrene. There, he negotiated a deal with an Alaphani for a collection of transponder codes. After Chewbacca noticed a couple of bounty hunters observing them, Solo finalized the transaction, providing the Alaphani with credit chips in return for the codes. The two bounty hunters trailed them, but Solo ambushed them, seizing their weapons and assuring them that Jabba would receive his payment. They boarded the Millennium Falcon and departed the Ring of Kafrene, returning to Mako-Ta only to find it under siege by Darth Vader and his Death Squadron. After evading the assault, he sold the information acquired from the Ring of Kafrene to Sana Starros on Nar Shaddaa.

0-0-0 and BT-1 were apprehended by Imperial forces during a sweep of the Ring of Kafrene. They were equipped with restraining bolts and returned to service.

Inhabitants

The crowded streetways of the Ring hosted a plethora of individuals

As a remote space trading station and a stopover for travelers, the Ring of Kafrene was populated by a diverse array of individuals, including humans, nonhumans, and beings of varying genders. Many of these individuals became stranded on the outpost, destined to reside among the dense crowds, exhibiting a characteristic sluggish gait. Workers labored during the day and adhered to the main thoroughfares at night due to the ever-changing nature of the Ring's layout.
