Urian Orlan was a male individual. During the liberation of Kashyyyk, he held the Imperial Rear Admiral rank, and served under Grand Moff Lozen Tolruck. Orlan was under the command of Vice Admiral Domm Korgale on the Star Destroyer Dominion. After Han Solo and his team landed in the ship's hangar, they released a large spider that killed him.
During the reign of the Galactic Empire, Urian Orlan was a male officer in the Imperial Navy. Rae Sloane, who would later become Grand Admiral, was one of his contemporaries. Orlan was given command of the Star Destroyer Dominion despite his reputation for being a hesitant commander, and his commission was expedited. By 5 ABY, Orlan had achieved the rank of Rear Admiral and was assigned to Kashyyyk, a planet that had been renamed Imperial territory G5-623 and served as a significant source of raw materials and Wookiee slaves. Orlan was under the command of Grand Moff Lozen Tolruck, one of the few Imperial remnant leaders who continued to assert that Emperor Palpatine had somehow survived the destruction of the second Death Star. Kashyyyk was one of the few Imperial strongholds that the New Republic, the Alliance to Restore the Republic's successor government, had not yet attacked.
Rear Admiral Orlan instructed the starships to turn around when Han Solo and Norra Wexley's rebel team infiltrated the system disguised as repair crew because the planet was under lockdown. He also asserted that the Emperor was still alive and well. Then, Sinjir Rath Velus, a former Imperial loyalty officer, sent a bogus classified work order. Rear Admiral Orlan, satisfied, permitted the rebels to travel to the automated prison Ashmead's Lock for maintenance.
Orlan contacted Grand Admiral Sloane, the official head of the Galactic Empire remnants, because he was perplexed by the directive. Sloane reminded the Rear Admiral to address her as Grand Admiral, which he did with reluctance. Orlan then went on to describe his encounter with the two ships that claimed to have code clearance from Grand Admiral Sloane. Orlan identified the ships as an SS-54 light freighter and a YT-1300 light freighter. These ships were actually the gunship Halo of Jas Emari, a Zabrak bounty hunter, and Solo's freighter Millennium Falcon.
Sloane recognized the Falcon and instructed Admiral Orlan to dispatch a team to look into the situation and provide a report. Sloane reaffirmed her authority and cautioned him that Tolruck would anticipate a visit from her should he fail to carry out her orders when Orlan replied that he needed to speak with Grand Moff Tolruck. Fleet Admiral Gallius Rax, Sloane's superior, instructed her to call Orlan back and inform him that they had authorized the prison repairs after Orlan had ended the conversation. The rebel prisoners at Ashmead's Lock were essential to Rax's scheme to assassinate the New Republic leadership on Chandrila, a fact unknown to Orlan and Sloane.
Tolruck instructed Admiral Orlan to begin orbital bombardment and obliterate all life on Kashyyyk's surface after Han Solo, Chewbacca, and their rebel allies were successful in deactivating the inhibitor chips that were controlling the enslaved Wookiees and igniting a planetwide uprising. After Tolruck sent the authorization code, the Dominion and the other two Star Destroyers, the Neutralizer and the Vitiator, started bombing Kashyyyk from orbit.
Later, in an effort to knock out the Star Destroyers, Admiral Orlan and his stormtroopers encircled a rebel freighter that Han Solo and Chewbacca had flown into the Dominion's hangar. Several webweaver spiders that Solo's team had brought aboard their freighter mauled and devoured Orlan and his men. Solo and his team were then able to take over the Dominion's bridge and use the Star Destroyer to destroy the Vitiator. As a result, a New Republic force commanded by Princess Leia Organa, Captain Wedge Antilles, and Admiral Ackbar received the surrender of the Neutralizer's crew.
Urian Orlan was a little man with a bird-like nose and plastic-looking cheeks who was known for being a hesitant commander. It was thought that he wore a wig. Orlan was given command of the Star Destroyer Dominion despite his shortcomings as a commander. Sloane thought Orlan was impolite for not using her proper title, Grand Admiral, when addressing her. He was proficient in using Imperial communications equipment and transmitting data as an officer in the Imperial Navy. Orlan was later tricked by Han Solo and killed by a webweaver spider.
Urian Orlan made his debut as a minor antagonist in Chuck Wendig's 2016 book Aftermath: Life Debt, the second entry in The Aftermath Trilogy.
