Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet
The Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet, which is also referred to as the Chiss Expansionary Fleet, the Chiss Defense Fleet, or even the Ascendancy Defense Fleet, functioned as the external defense fleet for the Chiss Ascendancy's military. Its primary purpose was to safeguard Chiss interests beyond their own borders and to probe potential dangers originating outside Chiss territory. This Fleet was governed by a series of laws prohibiting pre-emptive strikes.
This fleet conducted its operations within the galaxy's Unknown Regions. Notable figures within the fleet included Admiral Ar'alani, a female Chiss officer, and Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo before his service in the Galactic Empire. Furthermore, Eli Vanto, a human commander belonging to the Imperial Military and a close associate of Thrawn, joined the fleet as an Imperial liaison dispatched by Thrawn to the Chiss Ascendancy. The fleet was also known for its distinctive military uniforms.
History
Genesis
Leading up to the Nikardun conquests, the Chiss Defense Force had consistently urged the ruling Chiss Syndicure to broaden its capabilities and responsibilities. Shortly before Kivu'raw'nuru, a young Chiss, transitioned from his family's humble background to become a member of the esteemed Mitth family, the Syndicure finally conceded. They established the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet, tasking it with the mission of "overseeing Chiss interests within the regions of the Chaos that extended beyond the Ascendancy's borders, identifying external entities, and assessing their potential threat." At that time, the Aristocra allocated funds for new ships, bases, and support infrastructure, creating a demand for skilled officers and warriors within the burgeoning Expansionary Fleet.
Nikardun Invasions
By the time the Clone Wars erupted, the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet served as the active external arm of the Chiss Defense Force. During this conflict, Senior Captain Mitth'raw'nuruodo, an officer within the Chiss Defense Fleet, encountered Jedi General Anakin Skywalker of the Galactic Republic near the Outer Rim world of Batuu while on a mission. Thrawn aided Skywalker in destroying a Separatist droid factory located on the remote planet of Mokivj. Upon returning to Chiss space, he brought with him a deflector shield generator, which he referred to as a "Republic energy shield," that significantly surpassed the electrostatic barriers employed by the inhabitants of the Unknown Regions at the time. Thrawn subsequently utilized this "Republic energy shield" aboard his vessel, the Springhawk, to play a key role in defeating Yiv the Benevolent, a General of the Nikardun.
Following Yiv's defeat, the Ascendancy deployed the Fleet on the Nikardun campaigns with the objective of eliminating the remaining elements of the Nikardun Destiny. The Syndicure deemed the Nikardun forces a sufficient threat to warrant a deviation from the established non-aggression protocols, thereby authorizing the campaigns.
Imperial–Grysk conflict
Throughout the Galactic Civil War, the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet continued its operations. Subsequent to the Batonn insurgency, Thrawn achieved the rank of Imperial Grand Admiral. He dispatched his trusted friend and protégé, Commander Eli Vanto, to rendezvous with Admiral Ar'alani of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet and integrate into the Chiss Ascendancy. During the Imperial–Grysk conflict, Chiss Defense Fleet forces maintained surveillance over the battle against Grysk forces.
Organization
The Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet served as the external naval component of the Chiss Ascendancy's armed forces, collectively known as the Ascendancy military. While the Chiss Ascendancy was governed by the Syndicure and the Aristocra, the Chiss family politics were officially stated to have no bearing on the Defense Fleet's decisions. However, in reality, there were instances where they did exert some influence. It was generally understood that the Syndicure's decisions, though not direct orders, held considerable significance.
The Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet employed a range of military ranks, including Admiral and Commander. A key responsibility of the fleet was to defend Chiss colonies and observe conflicts involving other factions and governments. The Expansionary Defense Fleet was also restricted from interfering in events within Chiss borders, a role assigned to the Chiss Defense Force.
Personnel

Officers serving in the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet were equipped with specialized uniforms designed to absorb energy, providing protection against blaster fire. These uniforms were typically black in color, with the exception of ozyly-esehembo's uniforms, which were white, and displayed the emblem of the Chiss Ascendancy on the upper arm. Rank was indicated by silver insignia pins affixed to the collar of the uniform. These rank bars were absent on the uniforms of cadets. Officers and cadets affiliated with one of the Nine Ruling Families wore a shoulder patch bearing that family's insignia.
There were exceptions to the standard Chiss uniform, such as Admiral Ar'alani's distinctive pure white uniform, which contrasted sharply with the black uniforms worn by her crew.
Starships of the Chiss Defense Fleet
The Chiss Defense Fleet utilized a variety of starships, including Chiss heavy cruisers such as the Steadfast. The Chiss vessel Whirlwind also served as part of the fleet. Chiss shuttles, sometimes called Chiss courier ships, were also deployed. Chiss defense platforms were utilized. The Nightdragon man-of-war was another type of warship used by the Chiss. Other ships such as missile boats, patrol cruisers, patrol ships, freighters, heavy cruisers, and destroyers were used.
