Loth-wolf

Loth-wolves were sentient canine predators that were native to the planet of Lothal. These Loth-wolves possessed a unique connection with the Force and the planet Lothal itself, functioning as protectors of the light side there. Although widely presumed extinct by the time of the Imperial Era, Loth-wolves reappeared in 1 BBY when members of the Spectres rebel cell encountered them during an undercover mission on Lothal for the Rebel Alliance.

Biology and appearance

Loth-wolves represented a canine species indigenous to Lothal. Their coats displayed a range of colors, including white, black, and silver. These creatures were not only sentient, but also capable of speaking Galactic Basic Standard, although they rarely chose to do so. Their deep connection to the Force on Lothal granted them extraordinary abilities, such as hyperspace tunneling and passage through the World Between Worlds. Loth-wolves were large, often exceeding the height of a human. Notably, one Loth-wolf, known as Dume, was exceptionally large even for his species.

History

Before the Empire

Early settlers on Lothal regarded Loth-wolves as a threat, with farmers commonly carrying blasters for protection. These creatures were featured in ancient cave paintings by Lothal's original inhabitants and were even mentioned in a Lothalite children's rhyme.

By the Imperial Era, Loth-wolves were generally believed to be extinct, having disappeared for over a hundred years. However, during the Clone Wars, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka Tano encountered a depiction of a Loth-wolf while visiting Mortis.

Reign of the Empire

Crossing paths

In 1 BBY, Ezra Bridger had an encounter with a Loth-wolf while on a scouting mission in Lothal's fields. The Loth-wolf, sensing the danger posed to Lothal by the Galactic Empire, an organization aligned with the dark side, due to its Force connection, later aided Bridger and Sabine Wren in their escape from Imperial forces. It used its power to put Wren to sleep with a single word and disappeared when the other members of the Spectres approached.

Loth-wolves could travel through the World Between Worlds.

Subsequently, the white wolf, along with two other Loth-wolves, transported Bridger, Wren, Zeb Orrelios, Kanan Jarrus, and Ryder Azadi from a wolf den in Lothal's northern hemisphere to a cliff dwelling in the south. They achieved this using a means resembling hyperspace travel and demonstrated their ability to enter the World Between Worlds by walking through space. The white wolf showed particular interest in Kanan Jarrus, addressing him by his birth name, "Dume." Along with the two black wolves, the white wolf prevented Jarrus from returning to Lothal City to rescue Hera Syndulla, delivering a message to him. It then silently observed Kanan through the grass as he meditated before embarking on his crucial mission to rescue her.

Following Kanan's death at the hands of Governor Pryce, Ezra, while grieving, found himself pursued by the white wolf and two others until nightfall. Lost and exhausted, Ezra fell asleep near a large mound, only to awaken to the sight of the three wolves and a larger one named "Dume." After speaking with Dume, the wolves gifted Ezra a stone from the Lothal Jedi Temple. Subsequently, Ezra reunited with the other Spectres and shared his plan to reach the temple.

The Loth-wolves then emerged from the grass, and the crew rode them to the temple, with the wolves using a hyperspace-like method of transportation once more. Upon arrival, Ezra used the stone as a key to unlock the mural of the Mortis gods on the temple wall. This action caused the painted Loth-wolves flanking the mural to come alive, howling and moving to the right. The painted wolves then circled, creating a portal to the World Between Worlds.

Within the World Between Worlds, Ezra noticed a constellation-like representation of a Loth-wolf in the sky. After Ezra returned from the World Between Worlds and closed the temple, the painted wolves ceased forming the portal and moved towards the portrait of the Father as the temple crumbled. Following this event, Ezra finally accepted Kanan's death, and as he did, he saw the white wolf in the distance, which looked at him and then left.

Liberation of Lothal

Several Loth-wolves played a role in Ezra's capture of Pryce by drawing Rukh and several stormtroopers into a cave. The wolves' fierce nature easily overwhelmed the Imperial soldiers. Pryce was ultimately captured by the white Loth-wolf, who had thrown Rukh off the base. The clones Wolffe and Gregor remarked on how they fought "like the boys" back in the Clone Wars, referencing the 104th Battalion "Wolfpack" that Wolffe had commanded. After eliminating most of the stormtroopers, the wolves turned their attention to the remaining soldiers, who were intimidated and quickly surrendered to the rebels.

Rukh, having survived the fall, overpowered Wolffe, Mart Mattin, and Cikatro Vizago and prepared to execute them. However, the white Loth-wolf intervened, and Rukh barely managed to escape by boarding a TIE gunfighter. The Loth-wolf growled as Rukh fled, but remained to ensure the safety of the three rebels before departing. This allowed the three rebels to aid Ezra's plan to liberate Lothal by summoning a pod of purrgil to attack Grand Admiral Thrawn's blockade above Lothal.

Post-Empire

With the Imperial forces gone from Lothal, Loth-wolves were observed roaming freely across the open plains.

Behind the scenes

During a FanExpo panel interview, Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni drew a comparison between the Loth-wolf and the Bendu, noting that neither was inherently good nor evil in terms of the Force. He included the wolf due to his personal fondness for the animal, as well as its cultural association with guidance. He further explained that the Loth-wolf represents a natural aspect of the Force on Lothal.

In Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy, Beck Ollet mentions to Zare Leonis that, before the time of the Galactic Empire, people would carry blasters to protect themselves from Loth-wolves while planting orchards for jogan fruit. Author Jason Fry suggested that Ollet was likely referring to the time of his parents or grandparents and liked the line to give Lothal history. This information, however, appears to contradict the idea that Loth-wolves had not been seen in 100 years and were considered extinct. Surely, even the most cautious farmer would be unlikely to carry a blaster to ward off a predator long believed extinct by the time of Ollet's parents. It is possible, however, that Fry wrote the line before the precise details of the last appearance of Loth-wolves on Lothal were finalized. Alternatively, Ollet's grandparents may have encountered Loth-wolves as teenagers or young adults, as a lifespan of 100 years is not unreasonable for humans in the Star Wars universe.
