DUM-series pit droid

The DUM-series pit droid represents a repair droid model that was produced by Serv-O-Droid, Inc.. These droids had been actively utilized for approximately two centuries leading up to the Invasion of Naboo. Notably, WAC-47 was a pit droid, though his programming differed as he was designed to be a pilot.

Pit droids were known for being inexpensive, easily replaced, and remarkably resilient droids used for repairs. They possessed a height of 1.19 meters when fully extended, but they could also collapse into a smaller, more convenient form when not in operation. This transformation could be triggered by a tap to their "nose." These droids were capable of lifting objects that significantly outweighed them. Their bodies were protected by a robust alloy shell, enabling them to withstand the severe weather conditions found on Tatooine.

The programming of pit droids included a sense of urgency, but their limited processing power restricted their ability to handle intricate tasks. Within the Mos Espa Grand Arena, pit droids primarily served to refuel vehicles, access confined areas, and establish basic wire connections.

In situations where a pit droid couldn't reach the system requiring attention, it would enlist the aid of other pit droids to construct a precarious and somewhat unstable droid pyramid. Furthermore, pit droids demonstrated fearlessness when confronted with hazardous assignments, even displaying a willingness to put themselves in harm's way.

History

During the Boonta Eve Classic event held in Mos Espa on Tatooine in 32 BBY, Ody Mandrell boasted a record-breaking team of pit droids to service his podracer. Regrettably, one of these droids was drawn into the intake of Mandrell's podracer. Although the droid survived the incident, Mandrell's podracer engine was damaged beyond repair.

During the Clone Wars, Clone Commander Neyo, who served as the CO of the 91st Mobile Reconnaissance Corps, had a pit droid in his service known as WAC-47. WAC-47, who also functioned as a pilot, was selected to pilot D-Squad under the command of Colonel Meebur Gascon. During this mission, WAC-47 was promoted to the rank of Corporal.

Later, WAC-47 joined the Alliance to Restore the Republic and was reunited with R2-D2 during the scourge of the droids. Several other pit droids were stationed aboard the Silver Arrow, a ship belonging to the Rebel Alliance Navy during the Galactic Civil War. Unfortunately, the Scourge infiltrated the ship, infecting all the droid units on board, including the pit droids. These infected droids proceeded to kill all the organic crew members and subsequently attacked Magna Tolvan's crew.

Following the collapse of the Galactic Empire, Peli Motto, who managed Hangar 3-5 in Mos Eisley, employed three pit droids to perform maintenance on arriving ships.

Around 34 ABY, numerous pit droids were observed on the space station called the Colossus, where they worked as labor droid and loader droids. One of these pit droids was named G-LN and was owned by Flix and Orka. G-LN assisted them in the Office of Acquisitions by helping them retrieve items or assist customers.

Behind the scenes

The debut of pit droids occurred in the 1999 motion picture Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, which was the initial installment of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Within Canon, the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars officially identified these droids as DUM-series pit droids. Art director Doug Chiang developed preliminary design sketches for pit droids during the production of The Phantom Menace. Sound engineer Ben Burtt crafted their vocalizations using a similar approach to R2-D2's Binary, but instead of a musical synthesizer, he utilized the charming sounds of infant toys.

When the decision was made to feature a droid as the central character in the Star Wars Galaxy of Creatures animated micro-series, the production team initially considered using a pit droid. However, Matt Martin from the Lucasfilm Story Group expressed his disapproval of a droid performing tasks outside its intended purpose. Consequently, the team created the Safari droid as a substitute, which shared comparable characteristics with the pit droid.
