Ratter

Ratter was a male Trandoshan male big game hunter. He engaged in hunting activities with a hunting lodge composed of other Trandoshan hunters of big game. The group, under the leadership of Garnac, hunted both non-sentient creatures and sentient beings. The sentient beings were captured and then abandoned on the moon of Wasskah. In the year 20 BBY, Ratter participated in a hunting expedition on the day before Garnac's son's initiation into the hunting guild. During this particular hunt, Ratter and his hunting partner Sochek tracked down a Terrelian Jango Jumper along with a Snivvian, the latter of whom Ratter fatally shot, resulting in his death.

Some days later, the floating headquarters of the hunting guild was ambushed by a band of prisoners. These prisoners were being led by the captured Jedi Padawan, Ahsoka Tano. Ratter assisted in the defense of the floating fortress, and for a short period, he managed to subdue Tano's force. However, the attackers were bolstered by Wookiee soldiers who had been contacted earlier. Ratter tried to duel the Wookiee Chewbacca, but the Jedi youngling O-Mer intervened to save Chewbacca's life, resulting in Ratter being thrown overboard, leading to his demise. Garnac's entire guild soon fell after this event.

Trophy hunter

Ratter was a Trandoshan male big game hunter who held membership in a hunting guild that was headed by the Trandoshan hunter named Garnac. Like both Ratter and Garnac, every member of the guild was exclusively Trandoshan. Their collection of trophies included numerous non-sentient creatures gathered from across the galaxy. However, the guild was also known for abducting sentient beings. These individuals were then abandoned on the moon of Wasskah, where they were subsequently hunted for sport by the Trandoshans.

During the year 20 BBY, a number of new prisoners were deposited on Wasskah's Island Four, delivered by the guild's Trandoshan prisoner ship and its crew. The hunt commenced the day after their arrival. Ratter was present in the trophy room of the guild's floating fortress headquarters when Garnac formally announced the commencement of the hunt. Ratter, along with the other hunters, armed themselves, cheering and celebrating the beginning of the hunt. For this hunt, Ratter teamed up with fellow hunters Lo-Taren and Sochek, boarding an MSP80 Pteropter hover pod that Ratter then piloted to the surface of Wasskah.

Eventually, the pair encountered two of the new arrivals: the Snivvian Katt Mol and the Terrelian Jango Jumper Lika. Ratter and Sochek positioned themselves stealthily in the canopy above their targets, catching them unaware. Ratter initiated the attack, delivering a killing blow to Mol. Following this, he opened fire on Lika with both of his blaster pistols. The Jango Jumper attempted to flee, prompting Ratter to urge Sochek to take the shot, which he did. The hunt concluded, and the Trandoshans returned to the gloating fortress.

That night, Ratter participated in the celebration of the induction ceremony for Garnac's son, Dar. The young Trandoshan was officially inducted into the guild and given the opportunity to lead the next day's hunt. However, Dar was killed by his intended target, the Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano.

Duel with a Wookiee

A few days later, Tano had gathered two other stranded Jedi younglings, O-Mer and Jinx, to join her in fighting against the Trandoshans. Together, they successfully boarded and crashed the Trandoshan freighter, resulting in the deaths of pilots Clutch and Goron, and freeing the Wookiee prisoner Chewbacca. The following morning, Ratter and the other Trandoshans investigated the site of the crash. While Garnac and Lo-Taren discussed the nature of the attack, Ratter assisted Krix in retrieving Clutch's body from the wreckage of the freighter and carrying it away.

Later, Tano's group commandeered a hover pod from Krix and used it to launch a direct assault on Garnac's fortress. They initially attacked the hunters Lagon and Ramy. Lagon was thrown overboard, prompting Ramy to call for help. Ratter, who had been standing by with the hunter Gilas, was among the first to respond. Garnac, Lo-Taren, and Sochek joined in the defense of the base shortly after. When Ramy attempted to board a hover pod, the Jedi used the Force to lift the pod and Ramy, throwing it towards Ratter and Gilas, who lost their blasters as they dove for cover.

After getting back on his feet, Ratter engaged Chewbacca in one-on-one combat, with both fighters landing blows. However, the Jedi assault was disrupted when Garnac shot down O-Mer's stolen hover pod, causing it to crash onto the fortress's landing pad. Chewbacca was knocked to the ground, and Ratter seized his dropped sniper rifle to pin him down. Garnac commended Chewbacca and the Jedi for their determination, but before he could order their execution, Wookiee reinforcements arrived aboard the starship Halo.

The battle resumed, with Chewbacca surprising Ratter and disarming him of his blaster pistol. As Ratter's comrades began to fall in battle, the Trandoshan continued to brawl with Chewbacca, eventually gaining the upper hand. O-Mer intervened, striking Ratter with a rifle, distracting him long enough for Chewbacca to shove Ratter off the fortress, resulting in his death below.

Garnac was subsequently defeated by Tano, bringing an end to the guild. Garnac later met with the Dowutin Grini Millegi following the skirmish.

Personality and traits

Ratter was a tall, slender Trandoshan hunter who took great pleasure in eliminating his targets. However, he also showed admiration, such as when he acknowledged the speed of the Terrelian Jango Jumper Lika after she evaded one of his attacks. During Dar's initiation ceremony and the hunt that preceded it, Ratter was as enthusiastic as the other Trandoshans, participating in much cheering and whooping.

Ratter was proficient in hand-to-hand combat, capable of holding his own against the Wookiee Chewbacca for a time, and even managed to trap the Wookiee under his foot. However, Ratter's focus on his single target proved to be his downfall. He failed to maintain awareness of his surroundings and was subsequently attacked and distracted by O-Mer, giving Chewbacca an opportunity to overcome him.

Ratter had light green scales covering his body, with yellow and green stripes twisting down his arms. Ratter also had yellow eyes.

Equipment

Ratter used a variety of weapons during his final hunts on Wasskah. These included a pair of blaster pistols, which he used to hunt down Katt Mol and Lika. During the attack on Garnac's fortress, Ratter briefly wielded a sniper rifle before being disarmed. He later recovered it, though only briefly. Ratter was also known to pilot one of the guild's hover pods, which served as heavily armed combat speeders.

In his final days, Ratter wore dark green clothes, including a tank top with a yellow neck lining. Ratter also wore tactical overalls equipped with various pouches with yellow markings. Additionally, Ratter wore kneepads, ankle braces, and an electronically powered gauntlet on his right wrist.

Behind the scenes

Conceptual artwork of Ratter for "Padawan Lost"

Ratter was created as one of the many Trandoshan extras in Star Wars: The Clone Wars episodes "Padawan Lost" and "Wookiee Hunt," which aired on April 1, 2011 as part of the show's third season. Although his name was not mentioned in dialogue, Ratter's name was listed in the credits for "Padawan Lost," where Matt Lanter was credited as his voice actor.

Pat Presley designed Ratter, as he did with all the Trandoshans in the episodes. Ratter's slender physique was a result of a deliberate effort to create diverse body types for the Trandoshan characters, distinguishing them from Bossk, a Trandoshan who had appeared earlier in the series. Ratter's name is derived from a real-world reptile: the rattlesnake.

Deleted scenes and content

During the production of "Padawan Lost," Ratter was originally intended to have active camouflage technology, similar to that seen in the film Predator. However, this concept was abandoned.

Ratter also had a role in two scenes that were cut from the episode. In the first scene, Ratter and Lo-Taren were supposed to have personally hunted down Katt Mol and the Sakiyan Vadoo. A variation of this occurs in the final episode, where Ratter kills Katt Mol and Lo-Taren kills Vadoo, but on separate occasions. In a second deleted scene, Ratter and Lo-Taren hunted O-Mer and Jinx using the aforementioned camouflage technology, only to be thwarted and thrown off a cliff, after which Sochek rescued them in his hover pod.
