Sweet-sand cookie

Delights of sweet-sand were a popular treat among the younglings. The young Zare Leonis, during his younger years, was known to pilfer sweet-sand biscuits. When applying to the Academy for Young Imperials located on Lothal, his older sibling Dhara Leonis playfully mocked him regarding his childhood transgressions. Strono Tuggs possessed a sweet-sand cookie recipe, acquired from R0-GR during the droid's visit to Takodana Castle with his family.

Description

Sweet-sand cookies were a baked biscuit type, achievable through various recipes. The recipe employed by the Artiodac cook Strono Tuggs resulted in pale brown cookies, inconsistent in size, adorned with a sliced component, and both white and brown powders, notably Christophsian sugar, as toppings. Conversely, the cookies crafted by the reprogrammed B1 battle droid R0-GR exhibited a deeper brown hue, speckled with dark chips.

History

The reprogrammed battle droid R0-GR baked sweet-sand cookies.

By the age of fourteen standard years, between 6 BBY and 5 BBY, the Human Zare Leonis had a history of stealing sweet-sand cookies, a fact that Dhara Leonis, his sibling, would use to tease him as she aided him in completing his application for the Academy for Young Imperials situated on the world of Lothal.

During a visit to Takodana Castle on Takodana alongside the Freemaker family, R0-GR shared a recipe for sweet-sand cookies with Tuggs. Tuggs was employed by Maz Kanata, the castle's owner, as the head cook until the structure's destruction in 34 ABY. Later that same year, Tuggs authored a culinary book titled The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, which included the recipe for the cookies provided by R0-GR. In this book, he expressed the sentiment that the aroma of freshly baked cookies held a certain magic, capable of bringing joy to even the most hardened criminals, regardless of the specific recipe or the fact that every sentient species had their own version of the dish. Furthermore, R0-GR himself penned a book entitled Droidography while serving with the Resistance, featuring an image on the final page of himself holding a tray filled with sweet-sand cookies.

Behind the scenes

Origins and recipe

Within the current Star Wars canon, the initial mention of sweet-sand cookies occurred in Servants of the Empire: Edge of the Galaxy, a 2014 novel for younger readers authored by Jason Fry. Their visual debut took place in the non-canonical "A Hero Discovered," the inaugural episode of the LEGO Star Wars: The Freemaker Adventures television series, which was broadcast on June 20, 2016. The first canon visual representation of the biscuits appeared in the 2018 reference book Star Wars: Droidography, written by Marc Sumerak. The cookies trace their origins to the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they were initially referenced in Platt's Starport Guide, a 1995 supplement for Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game created by Peter M. Schweighofer.

The 2019 cookbook Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge: The Official Black Spire Outpost Cookbook, co-authored by Sumerak and Chelsea Monroe-Cassel, presents an external to the universe recipe for sweet-sand cookies. This recipe calls for butter, granulated sugar, almond meal, ground vanilla, flour, sliced almonds, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, heavy cream, and Christophsian sugar, with the latter having its own recipe within the book.

Galaxy's Edge appearance

A specific variant of the sweet-sand cookie, known as the Chocolate Chip Sweet-Sand Cookie, was available for purchase in the real world at the Milk Stand located within Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge at Disneyland in Anaheim, California during the park's 2022 Black Spire Day celebrations. These festivities coincided with Star Wars Day and the cookie was offered for a short duration. The Milk Stand's menu described the cookie as a "Chocolate Chip and Toffee Cookie topped with Pistachios and Sea Salt."

LEGO appearances

In "A Hero Discovered", which is set after the Battle of Yavin but before the construction of the second Death Star, R0-GR is depicted baking a batch of sweet-sand cookies within Freemaker Salvage and Repair on the Wheel orbital station. He is then summoned to the garage's primary hangar by the Human Freemaker siblings. Expressing his frustration at being interrupted mid-baking, R0-GR arrives with the tray, only to be questioned about his most harrowing battle during the Clone Wars. After the droid identifies the Battle of Nal Kapok, Zander Freemaker seizes the droid and pulls him onto a lift, intending to depart for scavenging parts at the battle site. This action causes R0-GR to drop the tray, scattering the cookies across the floor. Zander then reassures the distraught R0-GR that the cookies likely tasted delicious, but emphasizes the urgency of their departure.

In "A New Home," the premiere episode of The Freemaker Adventures's second season, the Freemakers align themselves with the Alliance to Restore the Republic. As their vessel, the StarScavenger, approaches the Alliance Fleet's command ship, Home One, each member expresses their excitement about the benefits of their new allegiance. R0-GR unveils a tray of burnt sweet-sand cookies, admitting his relief that someone else will be responsible for the cooking. Later, during his introduction to the Alliance's droids, he lists sweet-sand cookies as one of his primary interests, alongside writing his autobiography and forging friendships.

Further LEGO appearances

Following the Freemakers' successful repair of all the fighters aboard Home One, R0-GR attempts to celebrate by cooking a batch of sweet-sand cookies using the flame from the power plant of a BTL-A4 Y-wing assault starfighter/bomber. However, the intense heat burns the cookies and generates so much smoke that it blinds R0-GR. Uncertain whether the cookies are burnt due to his impaired vision, R0-GR attempts to deliver the tray to the Freemakers but inadvertently stumbles into a stack of crates, causing it to collapse and damage all the starfighters once again.

In "A Perilous Rescue," R0-GR successfully bakes a celebratory tray of sweet-sand cookies to present to the Freemakers and their allies upon their return to the Home One after a triumphant conflict against the Empire on Kashyyyk. Rowan Freemaker expresses his delight that R0-GR managed to avoid burning the cookies and proceeds to eat one.

In the LEGO Star Wars: All-Stars episode "Scouting for Leia/A Mission with Maz," which is set shortly before the Hosnian Cataclysm in 34 ABY, R0-GR reveals that his autobiography, From Trenches to Wrenches: The Roger Story, now includes updated sweet-sand cookie recipes, impressing the Drabatan Resistance member Ka-Pao. When the crime boss Graballa the Hutt later attempts to abduct R0-GR, the android and his companion Moxie Freemaker conclude that it is unlikely the Hutt desires R0-GR for his culinary abilities, given his tendency to burn sweet-sand cookies.
