During the Galactic Empire's reign, the 224th Imperial Armored Division served as an Imperial Army unit. Previously, under the Galactic Republic, this unit was known as the 224th Clone Division or simply the 224th Division. As part of the Grand Army of the Republic, the 224th participated in the Clone Wars, notably with its Mud Jumpers engaging in combat during the Battle of Mimban alongside the indigenous Mimbanese. Following the Empire's establishment, the 224th underwent reorganization and engaged in conflict against their former allies during the Mimban Campaign.
When it was under the command of the Grand Army of the Republic, the 224th Imperial Armored Division was formerly known as both the 224th Clone Division, and the 224th Division. The division was composed of clone troopers who were known as the Mud Jumpers.

The 224th was restructured into the 224th Imperial Armored Division, gaining a grim reputation. It was led by General Ire Falk, with Moff Bin Essada overseeing its operations along with other Imperial assets on Mimban. Major Staz was a member of the 224th, as was Captain Alayus Bolandin after he was promoted from lieutenant. Another captain was part of the division; Tobias Beckett stole this captain's uniform during an infiltration mission. The division took pride in its use of trench warfare, even though the soldiers who fought in the trenches despised the conditions they were deployed in, and suffered because of them.
Swamp troopers, who were a subset of [Imperial Army troopers](/article/imperial_army_trooper], and wet-weather gear stormtroopers were among the division's ground personnel. Imperial Starfighter Pilots and medics were also part of the division. The medics in the division only gave medical care to humans, following the Imperial interpretation of medical ethics. They also had a reputation for attacking Mimbanese natives during the Mimban campaign. The division was headquartered at Imperial Forward Field Operations on Mimban, and its airfield received deliveries from Y-45 armored transport haulers and supported TIE/ln space superiority starfighters. The 224th deployed All Terrain Defense Turrets as mobile artillery units, supported by swamp troopers.
During the period of the Clone Wars, the unit was referred to as the 224th Division of the Grand Army of the Republic. A group from the 224th, known as the Mud Jumpers, fought on Mimban with the 501st Legion, under the leadership of Jedi General Laan Tik. General Tik was killed during the battle, and the clones were forced into retreat.
While engaged in combat on Mimban, the 224th's Mud Jumpers received a song from a Hologram VJ of the Grand Army of the Republic's broadcast. The 224th Division fought alongside Iasento's tribe against the Separatist Alliance's forces, which had invaded the planet to exploit its mineral wealth.

In 19 BBY, when the Republic was reformed into the Galactic Empire, the planet faced another invasion from an outside enemy: their former allies. The Imperials returned to the planet, which they had once been allied with, as conquerors. Their goal was to take the abundant mineral resources that were located on the swampy planet. By 10 BBY, the 224th Imperial Armored Division was made up of swamp troopers who had been drafted from local planetary forces and added to the Imperial Army. While these were gradually being replaced with stormtroopers, regular army and stormtrooper personnel fought together. The 224th Armored Division participated in trench warfare and skirmishes against the Mimbanese.
The initial mention of the 224th occurred in "Rookies," the fifth episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars' first season, a canon animated series. This episode originally aired on October 24, 2008. Later, the unit was depicted as an Imperial military force in the 2018 film Solo: A Star Wars Story.
