Boc Aseca

Boc Aseca, pronounced Bocas'eca in Twi'leki, and also known as Boc the Crude, was a male Twi'lek. He was among the Seven Dark Jedi who were confronted and defeated by Kyle Katarn during Katarn's mission to safeguard the Valley of the Jedi. This Twi'lek once held aspirations of becoming a Jedi, but these hopes were dashed when the Order considered him too old. Years later, Boc became a member of the Galactic Empire, becoming the most unhinged and cruel follower of Inquisitor Jerec.

Biography

Early Years and Visions of Heroism

Born on Ryloth in 32 BBY, Boc's fate took an interesting turn when Anoon Bondara, the Jedi Watchman for the system, was killed in the same year. While Boc possessed Force-sensitive abilities from birth, they remained undiscovered for a considerable time. Boc admired the heroic deeds of renowned Twi'leks Jedi, such as Tottdon'eeta during the Old Sith Wars, and New'arforrth in the Ruusan campaign. However, by the time Nejaa Halcyon finally recognized his talent, Boc was deemed too old for Jedi training. Crushed by this, Boc felt robbed of his destined path.

Boc possessed the rare Force ability of psychometry, enabling him to extract "memories" from objects through physical contact. He used this power on three idols made from Forrth's funeral ashes, accessing fragments of Newar's memories. He was captivated by the images of Jedi victories at the Battle of Malrev IV and on Ruusan. This only intensified his desire to become a Jedi Knight.

Service to the Empire

The emergence of the Galactic Empire and the events of the Great Jedi Purge dealt another blow to Boc's aspirations. Adding to his misfortune, the Empire promoted the Twi'lek slave trade. Boc became the servant of the cruel and prejudiced Vice Admiral Terrinald Screed. Inquisitor Jerec detected Boc's Force sensitivity and demanded that Screed hand him over to the Inquisitorius for execution, to which Screed complied.

However, Jerec had different intentions. He sensed that Boc possessed knowledge about the legendary Valley of the Jedi, which Jerec sought. Using the Force, Jerec extracted the information Boc had gathered about Ruusan. He enslaved Boc, granting him a brutal apprenticeship that fueled Boc's animosity towards Humans. Ultimately, Boc did become a Jedi, but a Dark Jedi.

Becoming a Dark Jedi

Boc joined Yun, Sariss, Maw, Gorc, and Picaroon C. Boodle as one of the six Dark Jedi accompanying Jerec in his quest for the Valley of the Jedi. During the Subjugation of Sulon, Maw and Boc were assigned the task of decorating the walls of Barons Hed with the heads of defeated Rebels.

During the Mission to Dorlo, he was aboard the assault shuttle that boarded Duno Dree's transport, disabled above the planet. He demanded the Rebels surrender, and after the ultimatum, he signaled his force of commandos to drill a hole in the hatch and insert a sleeping gas nozzle. Soon after, they strapped Qu Rahn and his companions to stretchers and transported them to the shuttle, which then took them to the Vengeance.

When Jerec introduced his apprentices to Rahn, Boc reminded Jerec of his promise to deliver the Jedi's heart. Rahn taunted him, claiming he couldn't win his heart, which enraged the Crude Twi'lek, who threatened to cut out his tongue. Jerec silenced him, pointing out that the Jedi was trying to provoke Boc's anger, and he should instead focus it. During the interrogation, Jerec executed two Rebels when Rahn refused to reveal what he knew about the Valley of the Jedi. Then, when it was Duno Dree's turn, a young pilot who was crying and shaking in fear, but bravely defied Jerec, Boc took on the role of executioner, swiftly snapping the young Human's neck. When Rahn was finally left alone, completely defeated, he seized Yun's lightsaber and attacked Jerec's followers. Boc awkwardly spun before gracefully attacking Rahn's head, missing his target. Rahn severed one of the Twi'lek's tendons, causing him to fall, but Yun pulled him away. He was later taken to the sick bay where his tendon was reconnected, causing him pain and a limp.

Mission on Sulon

Jerec probed Rahn's mind and discovered that the secret to the Valley of the Jedi he desired was located on Sulon, the home of Morgan Katarn whom Jerec had killed years prior. Boc, Sariss, and Yun were dispatched to Sulon to investigate, where they found a map etched on the ceiling of the farmhouse. The three Dark Jedi numbered and removed the tiles, loading them onto a shuttle with a grav pellet. He briefly argued with Yun, who complained about his aching leg and Jerec's tolerance of them. When Yun asked for instructions, Boc directed him to Sariss. Before departing, Boc sensed that they were being observed. Sariss dismissed his concerns, believing they had simply attracted attention, but Boc insisted that he was Force-sensitive. They then left for Baron's Hed. The presence he sensed turned out to be Kyle Katarn, who had returned to his home.

Invasion of a Lost World

Eventually, the map provided Jerec with the necessary information, and his fleet traveled to the lost planet of Ruusan, where the Valley was located. While in orbit, they discovered Fort Nowhere, a settlement of smugglers and dissidents. On Jerec's orders, Sariss, accompanied by Boc and Yun, went down to "negotiate" with the settlers, conducting a reconnaissance flight on an assault shuttle. Yun questioned why the dissidents would relocate to such a desolate place, and Boc remarked that they were fleeing from the Empire.

Marie Peeno allowed the shuttle to land in the Fort, drawing a crowd of curious settlers. They were surprised to see the three individuals carrying lightsabers, including "a worm-head." After Sariss made an example of a dissident, fear spread among the others, who began to scatter, causing Boc to laugh hysterically, further frightening them. While Sariss interrogated the officials, Boc and Yun searched the Fort but found no evidence that the settlers knew about the Valley or the planet's past. Sariss falsely promised that the Empire would leave the colonists alone if they cooperated, but she soon planned an attack. The three Dark Jedi participated in the ensuing battle of Fort Nowhere, emerging from assault shuttles to slaughter the citizens. Boc finished off the wounded.

Back on the Vengeance, Jerec summoned Yun, and Boc opened the young Jedi's hatch. Yun, who was experiencing a nightmare, sensed the light, rolled off his bed, and activated his lightsaber. Boc laughed at his nervousness and informed him that Jerec needed his "scrawny presence." Yun took a threatening step forward, eliciting another laugh from Boc, who advised him to save his aggression for later. When asked about dreaming about blood, Boc replied that it was what kept him warm every night.

It turned out that Jerec wanted Yun to be present during the "excavations" or looting of artifacts found in the Valley of the Jedi. These operations had stirred the trapped spirits of ancient Jedi and Sith, who, after centuries of imprisonment, screamed and harassed the Imperials. As a result, a Jedi's powers were needed to restrain them. Yun was disappointed to be assigned such a menial task, believing that Boc would be "too unpredictable" for it. After a few days, Sariss reassigned Yun to investigate a missing patrol squad, and Sariss put Boc on the matter of screamers.

On the planet, Boc was with Jerec and Sariss when they set a trap for Kyle Katarn, which involved capturing his partner, Jan Ors, and bringing her to the Valley Tower. Boc beat her for his amusement. Unaware of all this, Kyle made his way to the tower and was lured to the Dark Side by Maw, whom he killed while defenseless. Jerec's trap to corrupt the fledgling Jedi had sprung, and the three Dark Jedi emerged from a door. Boc shoved the captive Jan forward, with Jerec urging Kyle to kill her and join them. Boc hopped around foolishly, anticipating the next death. Kyle retreated to the Sulon Star, and Jan tried to reach him, but Boc slammed her down and put his foot on her chest, laughing. He offered to chase after the fugitive, but the ship fell on its own, pushed by Jerec's Force powers. Jerec ordered his three remaining servants to find Kyle and destroy him.

Confrontation with Katarn

The Dark Jedi discovered the wreckage of Kyle's ship and found him unconscious inside, pulling him out into the night air. He seized the lightsaber that Kyle had used to kill Maw earlier. It was night when the captive regained consciousness, still paralyzed from the shock and pain, allowing Boc to taunt him sadistically. The Twi'lek mockingly produced the Jedi's lightsaber in front of him, dropped it, and raised a rock above his head. Kyle could only watch in pain as the Dark Jedi smashed it under the rock, remarking that older lightsabers were better and that Katarn wasn't intelligent enough to build one himself. Sariss grew tired of Boc's taunts and sent him to Jerec to report the finding of Katarn and his execution, telling their victim that he shouldn't expect a more welcoming reception, and left laughing with maddening glee.

Boc facing Kyle Katarn in a fierce duel

Boc ended up in the Valley of the Jedi near Jerec, who was harnessing the power of the Force nexus. Jan Ors, Katarn's partner, friend, and love interest, was kept nearby, tied to a column, vulnerable to Boc's taunts and harassment. At dawn, Kyle Katarn arrived. Boc had positioned himself like a statue, motionless and unseen among the hundreds of Jedi statues that adorned the Valley, spying on Katarn. Having constructed a mind shield, his presence was concealed from the Jedi's senses. He wondered how the Rebel was still alive and where the other two were. He got his answer when he noticed that Katarn wielded Yun's lightsaber.

When Kyle freed his partner, Boc revealed himself, offering to "silence" the annoying voices inside her head. He ignited one of his lightsabers and clashed it against Katarn's. Smiling, he told Katarn to send regards to the dead Dark Jedi he had killed earlier. He then ignited his second lightsaber, surprising Katarn, and passed it right in front of his face. Boc sensed the Jedi's fear and moved forward, weaving patterns in the air with his double bars of humming energy. He felt triumphant but sensed another threat. Ors tried to help Kyle by throwing rocks at Boc. The stones were no match for his lightsaber flurry, nor was she for his mental attack, and he began toying with Ors by inflicting small wounds. However, the distraction gave Katarn enough time to strike Boc with an ancient dark side technique known as spear of midnight black. Boc dropped his lightsabers and moved his hands as if trying to "remove" the spiritual weapon from his chest. He collapsed at the feet of Newar Forrth's statue.

Personality and Characteristics

As Boc matured in the dark side of the Force, his hatred was surpassed by a profound madness. He spoke with noticeable pauses, often laughing between words, and remained a joker even in the most serious situations. Despite this, Boc's speech was remarkably precise, and he was capable of maintaining rational conversations, never allowing his deranged manner to distract him from the situation at hand.

It is unknown how much of Boc's personality was genuine insanity and how much was a calculated act. Many who encountered Boc viewed his wild emotions as a sign of weakness. Sariss, another of Jerec's Dark Jedi, would shout orders at the Twi'lek with spite and impatience. In the brief moments when darkness clouded Kyle Katarn's thoughts, he considered Boc a mere "nuisance," and even the late Jedi Master Qu Rahn was inclined to dismiss the Dark Jedi as crude, lacking "tact and teeth"—in other words, ineffective.

Boc enjoyed tormenting living creatures and was in high spirits whenever he was on a mission, anticipating the suffering he would inflict. He relished leading a task force of (mostly xenophobic) humans with absolute authority over their lives, disregarding everyone's opinions. His eagerness led him to lead his forces from the front, unlike most of his peers, a trait appreciated by the men under his command.

Boc was grateful to Jerec for all that he had learned. However, when Yun warned Boc that Jerec would discipline them, Boc didn't take Jerec's threats seriously, believing that Jerec valued his Apprentices, while Yun remained more realistic.

Jerec clearly recognized enough power in the Twi'lek to keep him by his side, and the crazed Dark Jedi was the final obstacle between Katarn and Jerec himself. Ultimately, madness defined Boc: when he realized that Katarn had struck the killing blow, he laughed maniacally with his last breaths before collapsing.

Powers and Skills

Boc's lightsaber skills and Force mastery grew in tandem with his increasing anger and madness. As a practitioner of Form VI, his fighting style was described as unorthodox and unpredictable. Boc often tricked opponents into believing he wielded a single wide lightsaber, when in reality he wielded two. In battle, the Twi'lek would separate the modified weapon and launch into an awkward, seemingly clumsy, but deadly imitation of his idol's two-bladed Jar'Kai style. One of his combat strategies involved jumping about incessantly, making it difficult for his opponent to strike him physically, all while laughing and taunting his foe.

His senses were perhaps more acute than those of his peers. During the mission to Sulon, he was the only one, among Sariss and Yun, who sensed Kyle Katarn's presence and desire for revenge, something the other two struggled to perceive. Besides Jerec, Boc is the only known individual adept in the use of Force Destruction, a rage-fueled manifestation of the Force. He also possessed the ability to telekinetically throw debris at his enemies. Furthermore, he had at least a limited ability to conceal his presence, both physically and from other Force sensitives, as Kyle Katarn and Jan Ors discovered when one of the supposed statues in the Valley of the Jedi suddenly leaped from its pedestal to confront them.

Behind the Scenes

Boc concept art.

The name Boc Aseca is an anagram of the Spanish words "Boca Seca," which translates literally to "Dry Mouth."

While realized as a computer-generated imagery character in the game, Boc is portrayed by actor Time Winters in cutscenes between levels.

Winters wore prosthetics applied by make up artist Michael Burnett which took an hour and a half. Burnett based his work on photographs of Bib Fortuna from Return of the Jedi to create the look. The disguise included "large and painful" contact lenses

In the audio dramatizations, he was voiced by Stephen D'Ambrose.

There are two conflicting accounts of Boc's official death. According to the illustrated novella Dark Forces: Jedi Knight, Katarn used the dark side of the Force to create an invisible spear of midnight black, which he hurled at Boc, killing him almost instantly. In The Dark Forces Saga, Katarn ended Boc's Jedi dreams by cutting the Twi'lek down with his lightsaber at the foot of the statue.
