Gorgeous Su

Gorgeous Su, a female Houk, served within the 61st Mobile Infantry of the New Republic. She was also the sibling of Jorgatha, who was a New Republic soldier. During a military action conducted on the world of Troithe, she and her brother were dislodged from their positions due to an assault by the 204th Imperial Fighter Wing of the Galactic Empire. After linking up with other New Republic forces, Wyl Lark, a New Republic pilot, selected Su to be a member of his hastily formed squadron. She was provided with a Humble HoverCat airspeeder before the New Republic contingent began a clandestine journey through the subterranean tunnel system of Troithe.

During their travels, Su proposed the game Who? What? Where? to her squadron mates, which led to some disagreement due to her own entry. Subsequently, a scout belonging to Squadron Three of the 204th discovered the New Republic group within the tunnels. While the scout met his demise while confronting Lark, Squadron Three soon followed, a fact that Su observed during a reconnaissance mission inside the tunnels. Although Lark attempted to divert the attention of the TIE fighter squadron with himself, Su was pursued by the TIEs and perished. Additionally, Squadron Three was isolated from the New Republic forces when one of their vehicles exploded, thus blocking a tunnel entrance.

Biography

Transfer to pilot

At some point, Gorgeous Su entered into marriage with Thage Howless, from whom she eventually became estranged from her. During the Galactic Civil War, both she and her brother Jorgatha were part of the 61st Mobile Infantry of the New Republic. Jorgatha became a New Republic soldier and eventually a squad leader. Around 5 ABY, the 61st engaged in combat within the urban areas of the ecumenopolis planet Troithe as part of a military operation against the Galactic Empire's presence in the Cerberon system of the Deep Core, which was commanded by General Hera Syndulla's New Republic battle group. However, the battle group suffered heavy losses in an attack by the 204th Imperial Fighter Wing of the Empire, which resulted in the 61st's forces being driven from their positions on Troithe's surface.

Su, Jorgatha, and approximately fifty other New Republic personnel, along with about twenty local militant sympathizers, gathered at a three-story speeder garage located in Troithe's Highgarden District. With the 61st's commanding officer, Captain Hazram Namir, being stranded on an asteroid, Sergeant Carver took command of the remaining New Republic forces. During a meeting involving the senior personnel of the remnant, it was decided that Wyl Lark and [Nath Tensent](/article/nath_tensent], two New Republic pilots, would form a new makeshift squadron to bolster their aerial capabilities against the 204th. While Tensent sought out aircraft, Lark recruited Su and fellow 61st members Sergeant Vitale, Denish Wraive, Ubellikos, and Prinspai, as they all had some level of flight experience.

Meanwhile, the remaining New Republic personnel moved through the Highgarden District and into a network of tunnels beneath the surface, with the intention of secretly reaching the Scar of Troithe. Tensent managed to acquire airspeeders, skimmers, and a V-wing starfighter for the new pilots to join him and Lark in flight. Additionally, they obtained unarmed ground vehicles for the rest of the New Republic personnel to travel in as a convoy, all thanks to sympathizers located in the factory district known as the Web. Su herself was given a Humble HoverCat airspeeder, the cockpit of which she could barely fit into. As they journeyed through the tunnels, Lark put the newly formed squadron through drills, using past encounters with the 204th as training scenarios and providing them with inadequate training in the confined spaces of the tunnels.

Hunted

As they moved through the tunnels, Wraive commented on the presence of houses preserved within the stone walls of the tunnels over the squadron's comm channel. Su responded with rumors she had heard about hidden "ghost civilizations." Later, the Houk, feeling bored, suggested to her fellow pilots that they play Who? What? Where?, a game in which participants predict who would first hear about their death, the cause of their death, and the location of their death. After Lark approved the game, Tensent was nominated to go first, followed by Vitale. Su went after Vitale, choosing her husband Howless as the one who would hear of her death, and predicting that she would die by ramming the 204th's flagship with warheads somewhere along the Rimma Trade Route.

Wraive expressed doubt about Su's ability to reach the Rimma in her Humble HoverCat, and Su voiced her dissatisfaction with the speeder's name. Vitale also chimed in, arguing that Lark and Tensent's squadron, Alphabet Squadron, had the right to be the ones to end the 204th, although Tensent was open to sharing the opportunity. As the other pilots took their turns in Who? What? Where?, Vitale alerted them to an approaching TIE fighter, which turned out to be a scout from Squadron Three of the 204th. Lark pursued the TIE scout, which destroyed itself in an attempt to bury Su's squadron commander under rubble from the tunnel ceiling. With the caravan having been spotted by a 204th scout, Carver decided to move his people away from the location of the encounter.

Lark informed Su and the other pilots that their top priority was to protect their comrades in the caravan, a sentiment that Su and her comrades acknowledged individually. She later went on a reconnaissance mission, during which she spotted the rest of Squadron Three. She alerted Lark to the enemy presence and transmitted her sensor readings. When Lark suggested using the same tactic as the TIE scout, Su pointed out that it had led to the scout's demise. Her commander then decided to fly towards her position to distract the TIEs, despite protests from Carver and the other pilots. Proceeding with his plan, Lark had Su activate jammers. Squadron Three approached and opened fire on Su as the caravan entered another tunnel. At that moment, Carver ordered the final vehicle in the convoy to self-destruct, blocking the entrance to the new tunnel. Su was killed during the resulting chaos.

Legacy

Lark was affected by Su's death, and Tensent reassured him that she had been outnumbered and that her fate was unavoidable. The caravan eventually reached the Scar of Troithe, only to discover that the 204th had already reached their target, the Core Nine mining megafacility. The New Republic forces attacked the facility and, with the help of reinforcements, drove the fighter wing out of the Cerberon system. Days after the battle, which resulted in the deaths of Ubellikos, Prinspai, and Carver, among others, Lark spoke of the latter and Su with General Syndulla. He, Vitale, and Wraive later mourned the pilots they had lost from their squadron. During the Battle of Jakku, Tensent led a starfighter wing, which included Vitale and Wraive, in a final battle against the 204th. During the fighting, pilots from both sides shouted out the names of their fallen comrades, with one pilot choosing to call out Gorgeous Su's name.

Personality and traits

Gorgeous Su, a Houk female, chose to disregard the superstitions surrounding the rumored ghost civilizations beneath Troithe. To alleviate her boredom, she initiated the game Who? What? Where? among the other pilots of Wyl Lark's squadron to pass the time. During her turn, she identified her husband, Thage Howless, as her love, but also described his heart as black. Su disliked her Humble HoverCat, comparing it to a child's toy. When Lark suggested employing the same tactics against Squadron Three as their scout had attempted, Su made sure to emphasize how the scout's attempt had backfired.

Behind the scenes

Gorgeous Su made her debut in the 2020 novel Shadow Fall, the second book in the Star Wars: Alphabet Squadron trilogy penned by Alexander Freed.
