Lutrillians were a sentient species of humanoids originating from the planet called Lutrillia. Their defining characteristics included their expansive faces, soft side-whiskers, and widely spaced eyes. These beings embraced a wandering existence, traversing their home planet. Possessing a strong inclination towards excitement and learning, they frequently ventured beyond their world to immerse themselves in diverse cultures. Other groups generally found them to be very pleasant, although they had a slight weakness for material possessions.
During the timeframe of the Clone Wars, at least eight Lutrillians were held as prisoners within the Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center located on Coruscant. In the Imperial Era, the Lutrillian named Secon Daree served as a Rebel pilot. In the time leading up to the Battle of Yavin, Ownellco and another Lutrillian were present in the cantina in Mos Eisley on the same day that Obi-Wan Kenobi and Luke Skywalker first encountered Han Solo and Chewbacca.
Lutrillians were easily recognized by their broad facial structure and the wide separation of their eyes. They had soft jowls and long, pointed ears that stood erect. A unique feature of a Lutrillian's nose was a distinct vertical line that extended through its center and onto the upper lip. Their skin tone typically had a reddish hue, but could also be white or brown. Some Lutrillians had facial hair in the form of whiskers.
The lifestyle of Lutrillians was generally nomadic; they journeyed across their planet, Lutrillia, while avoiding underground predators. Their love for adventure and discovery led them to frequently explore other cultures by traveling off-world. They were generally regarded as agreeable, but they had a minor flaw: a tendency towards greed.
During the Clone Wars, the Lutrillian known as Maysano was a wanted criminal, accused of murder. At least eight Lutrillians were incarcerated in the Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center, where many took part in a riot that led to the escape of Moralo Eval, Cad Bane, and Obi-Wan Kenobi in disguise.
During the Imperial Era, Pomi Harchmak, a Lutrillian, worked as an inventory operations handler for heavy equipment at Pryce Mining, a mining operation on Lothal. An unidentified Lutrillian warehouse manager provided shelter to criminals from the Gray Syndicate within his storage facility. Secon Daree, a Lutrillian, had become a member of the Alliance to Restore the Republic by 1 BBY and participated in the attack on Lothal. In 0 BBY, two Lutrillians, one of whom was Ownellco, were present at Chalmun's Spaceport Cantina on Tatooine when Luke Skywalker first met Han Solo. Shortly thereafter, Skywalker entered a cantina on Nar Shaddaa, where a Lutrillian and the other patrons quickly noticed his arrival. Another Lutrillian was present at a gambling table when Skywalker and Solo placed a bet and lost the credits intended for purchasing supplies. A Lutrillian was present in Cloud City when the Baron Administrator, Lando Calrissian, instructed the inhabitants to evacuate before the Galactic Empire fully occupied the area.
During the New Republic Era, a Lutrillian was spotted at the Colossus refueling station situated on Castilon.
The Lutrillians made their debut appearance in the background of the cantina scene in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, which was released in 1977. Stuart Freeborn created the characters based on costume sketches by John Mollo, and they had a more prominent role in an earlier version of the scene, where one of them engaged in conversation with an insectoid alien.
