Slime

Slime was a secretion produced by certain species throughout the galaxy, most notably by Hutts such as Jabba the Hutt. The word "slime," along with related terms, was frequently employed as an offensive epithet.

Description

Certain species residing in the galaxy, including the sarlacc, secreted a substance known as slime. This viscous fluid bore a resemblance to mucus.

Slime of sentient species

Dianoga were slimy, sentient cephalopods. One example is Omi, a Force-sensitive female dianoga. She dwelled within a garbage compactor aboard the Galactic Empire's original Death Star until its destruction during the Battle of Yavin. The slug-like Hutt crime lords were considered slimy in their dealings, and they were also known to secrete slime. The reptilian Trandoshans possessed scaly skin that was slimy to the touch.

Creature secretions

Hutts consumed slime pods, which were gas-filled and buoyant in the swamps of Nal Hutta. The Dagobah swamp slug generated a saccharine slime that was both edible and used in the creation of the Dagobah Slug Slinger cocktail. Joopas, enormous worm-like beings living below the surface of Seelos, used their slimy tongues to ensnare prey and pull it underground.

History

As an insult

Equating something to slime was regarded as both insulting and derogatory. In 32 BBY, Darth Sidious dismissed Daultay Dofine, the captain of the Neimoidian and Trade Federation Droid Control Ship, as a "stunted slime" and demanded his removal from sight.

The Huttese term "sleemo" served as a disparaging label for individuals. Before the Boonta Eve Classic in 32 BBY, the Dug podracer pilot Sebulba hurled insults at his enslaved rival, Anakin Skywalker, who retaliated by calling Sebulba sleemo. In 22 BBY, Jango Fett, the human bounty hunter, used a saberdart to fatally wound Zam Wesell. As she died, Wesell identified Fett as her killer, referring to him as sleemo.

In 3 ABY, Luke Skywalker described the swamp planet Dagobah, the adopted home of Jedi Master Yoda, as a "slimy mudhole," which Yoda took as an offense. During a reunion in Cloud City on Bespin, old smuggling associates Lando Calrissian greeted Han Solo with the insulting phrase "slimy, double-crossing, no-good swindler."

Jabba the Hutt

Jabba the Hutt, often called "the slimiest thing in the galaxy"

Jabba Desilijic Tiure, a muscular Hutt lacking a skeleton, was notorious for his sliminess, earning him the reputation as the galaxy's slimiest being. In 4 ABY, his unwanted advances were rebuffed by Oola, a Twi'lek dancer enslaved by Jabba, and later by Leia Organa, who ultimately brought about his demise. Han Solo mocked Jabba's literal and figurative sliminess when the Hutt offered the smuggler a chance to beg for his life.

Behind the scenes

For the 1983 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, the slimy sound effects of Jabba the Hutt were partially created using a bowl of melted cheese.

In 2018, Uncle Milton, an educational toy company, launched its Star Wars Science Jabba the Hutt Slime Lab.
