Umbra was a clone trooper in the Grand Army of the Republic's 104th Battalion. Umbra served under the command of Jedi General Plo Koon and alongside fellow clone trooper Wildfire during the Clone Wars against the Confederacy of Independent Systems between 22 BBY and 19 BBY. At one point during the war, Umbra and Wildfire were stranded on the planet Felucia and were forced to eat insects to survive. When the war ended, Umbra gave up on killing, regardless of the cause.
During the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic, Umbra joined Wildfire in a rebel convoy that was transporting civilians to a hidden rebel world to escape the Empire. When the convoy was attacked by the Imperial forces, the transport they were on escaped and crash-landed on the planet Tatooine. Umbra, along with the other survivors, set up camp at the crash site, but were attacked by the stormtrooper Captain Terro and his forces. With the help of Jabba the Hutt's men, Terro was forced to retreat. Umbra and the remaining survivors were brought aboard a skiff and taken to Jabba's Palace.
At the palace, Umbra and the other survivors were imprisoned while Wildfire and the other rebels were forced to work jobs for Jabba. Umbra understood the dire situation they were in and encouraged Wildfire to leave at the first chance he got. Eventually, the rebels fought back and attacked the palace, but Jabba anticipated this betrayal. He brought Umbra and a few other survivors to his audience chamber and chained them by the necks. The rebels managed to make their way to the chamber and defeat the Hutt and his rancor, successfully freeing the survivors. Umbra, Wildfire, and the rest of the rebels and survivors made their way back to civilization, and boarded a transport, leaving the planet behind.

Umbra was a clone trooper who served in the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars, a galactic conflict waged against the Confederacy of Independent Systems that began in 22 BBY. As a clone trooper, he was cloned from the genetic template of the human bounty hunter Jango Fett and born on the planet Kamino. He served in the 104th Battalion under the command of Jedi General Plo Koon and Clone Commander Wolffe, and alongside fellow clone trooper Wildfire. At some point during the Clone Wars, squad mates Umbra and Wildfire were stranded on the planet Felucia for a month where they had to eat nothing but insects to survive. After the end of the Clone Wars in 19 BBY, Umbra retired from service, done with killing regardless of the cause.

By 0 BBY, during the time of the Galactic Civil War between the Alliance to Restore the Republic and the Galactic Empire, Umbra accompanied Wildfire on a rebel convoy transporting civilians to a hidden rebel world. The Galactic Empire ambushed the convoy and a battle ensued. The transport Umbra and Wildfire were on managed to jump to hyperspace and escape the battle. Eventually, the hyperdrive gave out near the planet Tatooine, where the damaged ship crashed. Umbra, along with the other survivors, set up a camp where they stayed before being attacked by Imperial forces led by Captain Terro.
A squad of rebels, which included Wildfire, fought back against Terro's forces as the stormtrooper captain attempted to gather the survivors and bring them aboard his dropship. The rebels were joined by some of Jabba Desilijic Tiure's men and fought together to push back the Imperial forces. During the skirmish, Umbra took cover behind a piece of wreckage and eventually ran to safety as the rebel squad covered him. Overwhelmed, Terro fled with some of the survivors he captured, leaving the rest to fall into hands of Jabba. More of Jabba's men then arrived and escorted the survivors aboard skiffs. While on the skiff, Umbra acknowledged the meaninglessness of the fight to Wildfire, equating it to the Clone Wars and the slaughter of their brothers.

As the group arrived at Jabba's Palace, Umbra was separated from Wildfire. Umbra was sent to the palace's prison while Wildfire and the rest of the rebel squad were brought before the Hutt crime lord Jabba. While in the dungeon, Senza, a woman enslaved by Jabba, tended to him and the other survivors. Wildfire was eventually brought down to the prison where he informed Umbra about their forced servitude to Jabba. Wildfire suggested Umbra could help, to which he apologized as he was done with killing, no matter the cause. Umbra also stated that if Wildfire had a chance to save himself, then he should take it and leave him behind. After their conversation, Wildfire left to do a job for Jabba while Umbra stayed behind in the cell.
After a successful mission, Wildfire and the rest of the squad returned to the prison to check on the survivors. Wildfire checked on Umbra who was sitting on his bed and picking at his food. Umbra recalled the time when he and Wildfire were stranded on Felucia and forced to eat insects, to which he stated he would prefer the insects over the slop provided to him. Umbra asked Wildfire if he did what the Hutt asked, to which Wildfire nodded. Then he asked if they were free to go, to which he remained silent. Understanding the dire circumstances they were in, Umbra told Wildfire that Jabba will never free them and that he should just leave and never look back. Not having given up yet, Wildfire left with the rest of the rebel squad to go on more missions for Jabba while Umbra was left in the prison with the other survivors.
Eventually, Umbra and three other survivors were brought into Jabba's audience chamber and chained by the necks. The rebel group then attacked the palace, something the Hutt anticipated. When the squad entered the chamber, Jabba stated that they were just in time to watch their friends die. Jabba then pressed a button on his dais which opened up a trap door and dropped two of the survivors into a pit which housed a rancor. Jabba then fled behind a door, using the other two survivors as living shields. The rebel squad split up, some dropped into the pit to fight the rancor and the others pursued Jabba before he could get away. The rebels managed to defeat both the rancor and Jabba, freeing Umbra and the rest of the survivors. They left the palace on a speeder bike and headed towards civilization. On their way there, Umbra thanked Wildfire for coming back despite his repeated insistence on leaving him behind. He told Wildfire that General Plo would have approved, tearing up at the memory of his former commander. Wildfire put a supportive arm around his old squad mate, and together, with the other survivors, they left Tatooine.
Like all other clone troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic, Umbra was implanted with a behavioral modification biochip by the Kaminoan scientists to ensure that he would not resist certain orders.

Umbra was first indirectly mentioned in "Return to Jabba's Realm," a news post posted on Fantasy Flight Games' official website on July 18, 2018. Umbra later was named and appeared in the Star Wars: Imperial Assault companion app Legends of the Alliance, in the "Jabba's Realm" campaign, made available for download in 2018. Umbra has a chance of being one of the eight crash survivors present during the first mission, or guaranteed if the player chooses Wildfire to be in the squad. This article assumes a specific path is taken in the campaign, which can very depending on the choices of the players. This article is written from the perspective of having Wildfire as one of the members in the squad. The dialogue between Umbra and the players differs slightly depending on whether Wildfire is present in the squad or not.

If the players are unsuccessful during the fight when Terro attacks the survivors' camp, then Umbra can end up being one of the survivors taken away on the dropship. If this is the case, then the players do not see Umbra again until later in the story. When the squad attacks the Imperial listening post, Umbra has a chance to be the individual in the bacta tank. If this is the case, then after releasing him from the tank he will explain that Terro took the other survivors to an outpost where he has sheltered and fed them. If a different character is in the bacta tank, then Umbra is at Terro's camp with the other survivors. If the players choose to make a deal with Terro, then he will bring the group to the outpost where they can find the other survivors, including Umbra. If the players instead choose to kill Terro, then they never go to the outpost and Umbra, along with the other survivors, are left behind there.
If the players fail to complete the first mission Jabba sends them on, then when the characters check on the prisoners, Jabba has their food taken away as punishment for their failure. If Umbra is one of the prisoners, then his food will be taken away as well. He also has a chance to step in between one of the Gamorrean Guards and a survivor in order to block the guard from taking the survivor's food. The guard then punches Umbra in the gut, but he stands his ground. The Gamorrean hits him again, knocking Umbra down and causing his nose to bleed, but the clone stands back up. Unsure of what to do, the Gamorrean looks at Bib Fortuna who motions for the guard to stand down.
When the group obtains the code cylinders, they have the option to keep them for the Rebel Alliance and not give them to Jabba. If they choose to keep them for the Alliance, then the group gets picked up by a rebel agent and taken to an outpost led by Lieutenant Adromie. The rebel agents will then rescue the survivors from Jabba's palace, which includes Umbra if he was not captured by Terro. The rebels then find an Imperial tracker on their ship, which prompts them to attack the Imperial listening post on Tatooine. The survivors are left at the outpost, and while the group goes to attack the listening post, Jabba's forces attack the outpost and recapture the survivors, including Umbra.

The finale of the story can end with either the players choosing to storm the palace or trade themselves for the freedom of the survivors. When they trade themselves, the survivors, including Umbra, are freed from their imprisonment. If Terro mediates the trade, then he takes Umbra and the other survivors to safety. If Terro is not present for the trade, then after Jabba releases the survivors he orders his men to fire at them, forcing Umbra and the other survivors to flee into the desert. Not matter what happens, if the players successfully defeat Jabba afterwards, then the rebels meet up with the survivors who come out of the ordeal free and unharmed. When the rebels attack the palace, Umbra has a chance of being one of the four survivors chained in the audience chamber. If Umbra is one of the survivors in the chamber, then he has a chance of either being one of two of the survivors to be dropped into the rancor pit, or one of two of the survivors to be used as a shield by Jabba as he flees. If the players fail to defeat the rancor while Umbra is in the pit, then he is eaten by the rancor. If the players fail to defeat Jabba while Umbra is being used as a shield, then Jabba flees with him and the other survivor and they become enslaved. Umbra also becomes enslaved, along with the rebels and the rest of the survivors, if the players fail to make it to the audience chamber during the attack on the palace.
