The 709th Legion, known by the moniker "Red Fury," functioned as an elite legion of stormtroopers within the First Order's military forces, reporting directly to Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. Ren himself hand-picked the legion's members, which included specialized units like the megablaster heavy assault troopers, totaling eight thousand troopers from the Stormtrooper Corps of infantry. Lieutenant Agnon, along with a stormtrooper sergeant, held staff officer positions within the 709th. Their primary transport and starship was the TIE/es assault shuttle.
During the war between the First Order and the Resistance, the 709th occupied the Black Spire Outpost on the Outer Rim world of Batuu. Their objectives included locating and eliminating Resistance elements on Batuu, leading them to adopt aggressive tactics when interacting with local inhabitants, such as Dok-Ondar, whom the 709th's sergeant cautioned against assisting the First Order's adversaries. While occupying Black Spire, a squad of 709th stormtroopers tried to apprehend the Clawdite fugitive Remex Io.
The 709th Legion, an elite infantry force within the First Order's Stormtrooper Corps, was known as the "Red Fury." This legion, at its peak, comprised eight thousand stormtroopers chosen and commanded by Supreme Leader Kylo Ren. The legion incorporated various types of stormtroopers, including regular troopers and specialized units like megablaster heavy assault troopers.
The 709th utilized the TIE/es assault shuttle, a First Order military vessel also referred to as a TIE echelon, for transportation. The cockpit's design drew inspiration from Kylo Ren's Upsilon-class command shuttle and the Imperial TIE Advanced x1 piloted by his grandfather, the Sith Lord Darth Vader.

The 709th Legion saw action during the galactic war that pitted the First Order against the Resistance. Following Supreme Leader Kylo Ren's ascension in 34 ABY, the 709th was dispatched to the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy. Their mission at that time involved occupying the Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu and eradicating any Resistance presence in that area. A sub-unit of the 709th, arriving via the TIE echelon, functioned under the direction of Lieutenant Agnon, a First Order officer, and a stormtrooper sergeant.
The 709th held the residents of Black Spire in low regard, derisively calling them "Batuuan rats" and referring to the outpost as a "rats' nest." However, they relished the fear they instilled in the local populace. Deeply devoted to the First Order, the 709th harbored intense animosity towards the Resistance and stood ready to obliterate Black Spire entirely to flush out and kill any insurgents lurking nearby. The sergeant proposed such drastic measures, and his commanding officer, Agnon, fully endorsed them, expecting nothing less from the soldiers under his authority.

The First Order's quest to find Resistance spies led members of the 709th to the Den of Antiquities, where they proceeded to interrogate the shop's proprietor, Dok-Ondar. As they questioned the Ithorian shopkeeper, the sergeant examined one of the relics: the lightsaber belonging to Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi, a veteran of the Clone Wars who was ultimately betrayed and executed by his own clone troopers. Dok-Ondar perceived the sergeant's inquiries as thinly veiled threats, asserting that he was merely a humble shopkeeper. However, the sergeant was aware of Dok-Ondar's reputation for selling valuable relics to the highest bidder, leading him to suspect that the Resistance might approach Dok-Ondar to acquire the Jedi lightsaber. Before the stormtroopers departed, after warning Dok-Ondar that any contact with the Resistance would result in the confiscation and destruction of his property, the Ithorian, noticing the sergeant's lack of knowledge about galactic history, felt compelled to explain how he had come to possess the lightsaber.
The sergeant deemed the story irrelevant to the 709th's mission. Dok-Ondar emphasized that the lightsaber was a potent symbol, the weapon of a true warrior that had endured beyond its owner's lifetime and survived through various eras, including the fall of the Galactic Republic, the rise and fall of the Galactic Empire, and the era of the New Republic. Dok-Ondar suggested that the lightsaber would likely outlast even the First Order. Furthermore, he cautioned the sergeant against using heavy-handed tactics, arguing that the cooperation of influential citizens was crucial for the 709th Legion to maintain control over the Black Spire Outpost, which was precarious at best. The sergeant reluctantly left, having received reports of potential Resistance activity in the marketplace, but he warned the Ithorian that he would return.

Following events in the past, the First Order issued an arrest warrant for Remex Io, the Clawdite member of Kendoh Voss' crew, after discovering the fugitive's presence in Black Spire with information provided by Varg, an associate of Dok-Ondar. When confronted by a squad from the 709th Legion, Io fled through the marketplace, evading blaster fire as the stormtroopers pursued him. Despite being instructed to capture Io alive, the troopers opened fire on him as they chased him through the streets, resulting in the accidental death of a civilian caught in the crossfire. One stormtrooper implied that this was acceptable because their orders did not specifically state that Io had to be brought back "whole."
During the chase, Io shot one of the stormtroopers, prompting his squadmates to abandon their efforts to capture him and instead focus on killing the Clawdite. After losing sight of their target, a bystander informed the stormtroopers that the fugitive had fled towards the spaceport. They thanked the civilian for assisting the First Order, unaware that it was actually Io using his species' ability to shapeshift.
Ultimately, the Red Fury came across a pair of individuals on Batuu who were suspected of being Resistance spies, and they made an attempt to take them into custody. However, they ended up engaging the two in a firefight that proved to be challenging enough that they were compelled to summon their sergeant for backup. The sergeant had to cut short a briefing with his superior, Lieutenant Agnon, to respond. The sergeant expressed his dissatisfaction with his unit's difficulty against only two Resistance spies, especially considering that one of his stormtroopers had been killed by them. Nevertheless, he managed to intercept and ultimately eliminate them using a speeder that he had brought with him. However, it turned out that the two individuals had no connection to the Resistance, as they were easily defeated when cornered. The unit received updated information regarding three persons of interest who had been spotted near the spaceport, and they eventually left the area due to the lack of anything of interest in the vicinity, while also having an informant follow them in case they decided to leave the planet.
Eventually, the Red Fury, along with their sergeant, encountered the Kendoh Gang and trapped them inside the Den of Antiquities. RS-2112, acting on the sergeant's orders, promptly struck Wooro across the face with his baton as a form of intimidation against Voss. However, Voss managed to escape by using a lightsaber to destroy a baby sarlacc's containment field, resulting in the death of ZJ-7199. A stormtrooper alerted his comrades about Voss, instructing them to establish a perimeter to trap her. When they received an anonymous tip about her location, they were led off the chase. Dok-Ondar had once again tricked them, assisting the Kendoh Gang in their escape as payment for his acquisition of the now-completed Sword of Khashyun.
The 709th Legion made its debut appearance in the first issue of the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge comic series, which was released on April 24, 2019.
