Oro-weave

Oro-weave was a substance resembling metal with a gold hue, frequently employed in the creation of clothing, jewelry, and specifically, bracelets. During the Galactic Empire's rule, the figure known as Ox-Herder facilitated the movement of oro-weave, a pursuit that proved lucrative for smugglers. The pirate Hondo Ohnaka once possessed a high-quality oro-weave vest, which was ultimately seized as spoils by the pirate captain Gunda Mabin. By 34 ABY, General Leia Organa of the Resistance owned an oro-weave bracelet. She was observed wearing this bracelet around the time of the evacuation of the Resistance base located on the planet D'Qar in that year, and also up until her death on the moon of Ajan Kloss a year later.

History

Smugglers and pirates

A fine oro-weave vest was in the possession of Hondo Ohnaka during the reign of the Galactic Empire.

During the reign of the Galactic Empire, oro-weave's value was such that Ox-Herder, reachable at the Trappist cantina situated on Guildhead's Way on the planet Chandrila in the Core Worlds, facilitated its smuggling. The smuggler Platt Okeefe noted in the logbook called Smuggler's Guide around 10 BBY that the transportation of oro-weave cargoes—aided by Ox-Herder—was a profitable endeavor for smugglers.

Sometime between 19 BBY and 10 BBY, the Weequay pirate Hondo Ohnaka owned a high-quality oro-weave vest trimmed with nerf-wool. This garment was subsequently among the items looted by the Blazing Claw pirate captain Gunda Mabin, who included the acquired items in the Smuggler's Guide, which had also come into her possession.

The jewelry of a princess

General Leia Organa wore an oro-weave bracelet around the time of the evacuation of the Resistance base on D'Qar.

By 34 ABY, General Leia Organa, the human princess of the destroyed Core Worlds planet Alderaan and leader of the Resistance, possessed an oro-weave bracelet. The bracelet was composed of numerous slender, curved strands encircling a significant portion of her wrist. Organa wore the bracelet on her right arm, together with a pair of aurodium earrings and several golden signet rings adorned with inset gemstones, complementing an Alderaanian mourning braid hairstyle and dark gray attire. In that year, the general donned this ensemble shortly after ordering the evacuation of the Resistance base on the Outer Rim Territories planet D'Qar, prompted by news of the impending arrival of a First Order force.

Subsequently, she boarded the primary Resistance capital ship, the cruiser Raddus, which—following a battle above D'Qar against the First Order warship Fulminatrix—fled to the Oetchi system in the Outer Rim. There—while still wearing the same outfit, including the oro-weave bracelet—Organa sustained severe injuries and was exposed to the vacuum of space after another First Order attack. She was then placed on life support after being changed into a patient's gown, and the bracelet was removed from her wrist. After Organa regained consciousness, she wore a different bracelet on the same arm. An illustration showing the general wearing her oro-weave bracelet was eventually included in the journal of the Resistance technician Rose Tico. A year later, Organa wore the same set of jewelry, including the oro-weave bracelet, with a different Alderaanian hairstyle and a purple-and-blue attire while at the Resistance base on the Outer Rim moon Ajan Kloss. She wore the outfit there until her death after contacting her son, Ben Solo, telepathically.

Behind the scenes

Oro-weave was initially shown as the material of a bracelet worn by Leia Organa in the cover illustration by Katie Cook for her book Art of Coloring: Star Wars: Keepsake Coloring Book, released on September 1, 2017. This cover was first revealed at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21 of that year and was featured in an article on StarWars.com published the same day. The illustration was based on Organa's appearance in the sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, which was released on December 15, 2017. On the same date, Pablo Hidalgo's reference book, Star Wars: The Last Jedi: The Visual Dictionary, identified the material as oro-weave. Before the release of The Last Jedi, the first full appearance of the oro-weave bracelet—although in holographic form—was in Battlefront II: Resurrection, a downloadable single-player story mode addition released on December 13 for the DICE video game Star Wars Battlefront II, which was released on November 17, 2017.

Leia Organa wearing an oro-weave bracelet, as depicted in Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy

The twenty-eighth issue of Marvel Comics's Star Wars: Poe Dameron comic-book series, written by Charles Soule, with pencils by Angel Unzueta, and published on June 20, 2018, mistakenly showed Organa wearing the oro-weave bracelet on her left arm in one panel. Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy, a reference book by Amy Ratcliffe published on October 30, 2018, featured an illustration by Karen Hallion that bears resemblance to a promotional photo of Organa from The Last Jedi. The latter image depicts the general after she regained consciousness during the events of The Last Jedi, wearing a different bracelet than the oro-weave one she wore earlier in the film. However, Hallion's illustration shows Organa wearing her oro-weave bracelet, despite both pictures depicting her in the clothing she wore later in the film. This article considers the Women of the Galaxy illustration as non-canonical regarding Organa's in-universe biography.
