Oro-weave

Oro-weave was a substance resembling metal, exhibiting a gold hue and employed in the creation of clothing and adornments, such as bracelets. During the Galactic Empire's rule, Ox-Herder facilitated the movement of oro-weave, a lucrative endeavor for smugglers; furthermore, the pirate known as Hondo Ohnaka once possessed a sophisticated oro-weave vest, which was ultimately plundered by the pirate captain Gunda Mabin. By 34 ABY, General Leia Organa of the Resistance owned an oro-weave bracelet. In that year, she donned it around the period when the Resistance base on the planet D'Qar underwent evacuation, and a year later, she continued to wear the bracelet until her passing on the moon Ajan Kloss.

History

Smugglers and pirates

A fine oro-weave vest was in the possession of Hondo Ohnaka during the reign of the Galactic Empire.

During the Galactic Empire's era, oro-weave held sufficient value that Ox-Herder, reachable at the Trappist cantina situated on Guildhead's Way on the Core Worlds planet Chandrila, facilitated its smuggling operations. At one juncture, specifically by 10 BBY, the smuggler Platt Okeefe documented in the logbook titled Smuggler's Guide that the transportation of oro-weave cargoes—with Ox-Herder's assistance—proved to be a lucrative activity for smugglers.

Sometime between 19 BBY and 10 BBY, the Weequay pirate Hondo Ohnaka was the owner of an exquisite oro-weave vest adorned with nerf-wool trimming. Subsequently, this garment was among the spoils seized by the Blazing Claw pirate captain Gunda Mabin, who cataloged the acquired items in the Smuggler's Guide, which had similarly fallen into her possession.

The jewelry of a princess

General Leia Organa wore an oro-weave bracelet around the time of the evacuation of the Resistance base on D'Qar.

By the time of 34 ABY, General Leia Organa, the human princess hailing from the destroyed Core Worlds planet Alderaan and the commanding officer of the Resistance, was in possession of an oro-weave bracelet. Its design featured numerous slender, curved strands that encircled a substantial portion of her wrist. Organa wore the bracelet on her right arm, accompanied by a pair of aurodium earrings and several golden signet rings embellished with inset gemstones, complementing an Alderaanian mourning braid hairstyle and a dark gray ensemble. During that year, the general sported this attire shortly after directing the evacuation of the Resistance base situated on the Outer Rim Territories planet D'Qar, prompted by intelligence indicating the imminent arrival of a First Order military force.

Subsequently, she boarded the primary Resistance capital ship, the cruiser Raddus, which—following a confrontation with the First Order warship Fulminatrix above D'Qar—escaped to the Outer Rim's Oetchi system. There—while still adorned in the same outfit, including the oro-weave bracelet—Organa sustained severe injuries and was exposed to the vacuum of space following another First Order assault. Subsequently, she was placed on life support after being changed into a patient's gown, and the bracelet was removed from her wrist. After Organa regained consciousness, she wore a different bracelet on the same arm. An illustration depicting the general with her oro-weave bracelet was eventually included in the journal of the Resistance technician Rose Tico. One year later, Organa wore the same set of jewelry, including the oro-weave bracelet, with a different Alderaanian hairstyle and a purple-and-blue attire while at the Resistance base on the Outer Rim moon Ajan Kloss. She remained in this attire until her death following telepathic communication with her son, Ben Solo.

Behind the scenes

Oro-weave was initially portrayed as the material of a bracelet worn by Leia Organa in Katie Cook's cover illustration for Cook's Art of Coloring: Star Wars: Keepsake Coloring Book, released on September 1, 2017. The cover illustration was initially unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con on July 21 of that year, and it was featured in a corresponding article on StarWars.com also published on that day. The illustration drew inspiration from Organa's appearance in the sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VIII The Last Jedi, which premiered on December 15, 2017. On the same date, Pablo Hidalgo's reference book Star Wars: The Last Jedi: The Visual Dictionary was released, identifying oro-weave by name. Prior to the release of The Last Jedi, the first full appearance of the oro-weave bracelet—albeit in holographic form—occurred in Battlefront II: Resurrection, a downloadable single-player story mode addition released on December 13 for the DICE video game Star Wars Battlefront II, which was released on November 17, 2017.

Leia Organa wearing an oro-weave bracelet, as depicted in Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy

The twenty-eighth issue of Marvel Comics's Star Wars: Poe Dameron comic-book series, authored by Charles Soule, illustrated by Angel Unzueta, and published on June 20, 2018, erroneously depicted Organa wearing the oro-weave bracelet on her left arm in one panel. Star Wars: Women of the Galaxy, a reference book authored by Amy Ratcliffe and published on October 30, 2018, featured an illustration by Karen Hallion that bears resemblances to a promotional photo of Organa from The Last Jedi. The latter image portrays the general during the events of The Last Jedi after she regained consciousness, wearing a bracelet distinct from the oro-weave one she wears earlier in the film. However, Hallion's illustration depicts Organa wearing her oro-weave bracelet—despite both pictures depicting her in the clothing she wears during the film's later portion. This article considers the Women of the Galaxy illustration as non-canonical regarding Organa's in-universe biography.
