Ric Olié

A human male starship pilot named Ric Olié served the Royal Naboo Security Forces. He held the position of commander for the Naboo Royal Space Fighter Corps, while also leading Bravo Squadron. Olié's skills also earned him the role of personal pilot to the Queen, frequently piloting the Naboo Royal Starship on behalf of Padmé Amidala. Due to Naboo's commitment to pacifism, Olié's abilities were seldom needed, although he did participate in the Invasion of Naboo. After that conflict, Olié sustained an inner-ear injury, leading to Daneska Varbarós eventually taking over as Naboo's royal pilot.

By the time the Galactic Civil War occurred, Olié had joined the Amidalans, a Naboo resistance group that sought to find and eliminate those responsible for Amidala's mysterious death. Facing the Sith Lord Darth Vader when Sabé tricked the Sith into visiting Naboo so they could assassinate him for his involvement in the former queen's passing.

Biography

Invasion of Naboo

When the Trade Federation invaded Naboo, Commander Ric Olié only had one superior in the Royal Naboo Security Forces, who was Captain Quarsh Panaka. At the start of the invasion, Captain Olié, who was also Bravo Leader, along with all of his pilots, were apprehended and taken into custody by Federation forces during their sweep of Theed. The Queen was also arrested, and the droid army quickly took control of Naboo. However, they didn't expect the arrival of two Jedi, Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, who were able to free the Queen, her attendants, Olié, and his pilots. Olié was given no time to understand the situation, as he was immediately rushed onto the Queen's Royal Starship and instructed to head for Coruscant.

Escaping would be a challenge, as the Federation's blockade presented a significant obstacle for Olié. He was piloting an unarmed transport against a fleet of heavily armed capital ships. Despite his efforts, the ship suffered considerable damage during the escape and lost its shield generator. R2-D2, an astromech droid on board, repaired the shields, allowing Olié to navigate the ship through the blockade to safety.

During their escape, the hyperdrive was damaged enough to prevent the ship from completing its journey to Coruscant. Kenobi suggested landing on Tatooine, a desert planet, to buy the necessary replacement parts. Qui-Gon Jinn, the Queen (disguised), the Gungan Jar Jar Binks, and R2 went to search for the parts. After a few days, they returned with the parts and a new member of the group: Anakin Skywalker, a nine-year-old aspiring pilot. Olié grew fond of the boy and gave him some brief lessons in piloting starships. When the Queen's appeals to the Galactic Senate for help for her besieged planet were ignored, she decided to return and take matters into her own hands. Olié flew the group back to Naboo to confront the Trade Federation. Olié's skills, along with a reduced Trade Federation space presence, enabled them to land on the planet, giving Amidala enough time to contact the native Gungans for assistance.

The battle for Naboo

Olié takes off from the Theed Hangar.

The Queen's strategy was for the Gungan Grand Army to gather and draw the droid forces away from Theed. Then, she and Panaka would infiltrate the city and capture Nute Gunray, the Viceroy of the Trade Federation. Meanwhile, Olié and his pilots would attempt to destroy the Droid Control Ship. Destroying the ship was crucial for deactivating all droid units and saving the outnumbered Gungans.

When the Queen and the Jedi freed Theed's hangar, Olié and his pilots quickly got into their N-1 starfighters and headed for the Droid Control Ship. The Federation launched Vulture droids to counter the Naboo offensive, and they succeeded in destroying many N-1 fighters. Only when Olié reached the enemy ship did he realize that the deflector shield was too strong, and the battle seemed hopeless. Just as the Naboo fighters appeared to be failing, the Control Ship began to explode from the inside, surprising Olié, as none of the Naboo fighters had managed to hit it. To his astonishment, a fighter piloted by Anakin Skywalker, who had unintentionally joined the battle, flew out of the exploding ship, landed inside, and damaged the main reactor. As the Droid Control Ship exploded, Bravo Squadron happily returned to their liberated homeworld to celebrate. He later went to Qui-Gon Jinn's funeral.

Post-battle of Naboo

Olié attended the funeral of his former sovereign, Padmé Amidala, which took place in Theed.

Sometime after the Battle of Naboo, Olié suffered an inner-ear injury that made it hard for him to leave the atmosphere, although he could still fly under the clouds. By 28 BBY, Daneska Varbarós had taken Olié's place as Naboo's royal pilot.

In 19 BBY, Padmé Amidala died after the end of the Clone Wars and the Galactic Republic's transition into the First Galactic Empire. Shortly after, a funeral was held for the former queen and senator in Theed. Olié was among those who attended the funeral and helped bury Amidala, whose body was placed in a tomb.

Galactic Civil War

During the Galactic Civil War, Olié became a member of the Amidalans, a resistance group founded by Sabé, the former royal handmaiden, with the goal of killing anyone involved in Amidala's mysterious death. After the duel on Cloud City in 3 ABY, the Sith Lord Darth Vader visited Naboo to seek revenge on those who hid the existence of Luke Skywalker, his and Amidala's secret son. Sabé tricked him into going to Naboo, and upon his arrival, the Amidalans attempted to kill him. As Vader chose to battle the Amidalans in one of Naboo's forests, Olié and some Amidalans trapped Vader, his forensics droid ZED-6-7, and some of his death troopers using Gungan bubble wort projectors.

Olié and the Amidalans confront Darth Vader

Vader demanded that Olié and his forces reveal themselves. Olié emerged from the shadows and sentenced Vader to death for the murders of Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, unaware that Skywalker and Vader were the same person. Recalling his meeting with Olié on the Queen's Royal Starship over thirty years prior, Vader asked Olié if he had met Amidala and Skywalker and if he saw Amidala die. Olié replied that he had fought with them during the Battle of Naboo but only buried Amidala. Vader then stated that Olié and the other Amidalans were useless to him and broke free of the projector. Olié ordered the Amidalans to fight for Padmé and Anakin, but Vader and his troopers easily defeated them before Vader impaled Olié through the back with his lightsaber. Olié died from his wounds, asking for forgiveness from his late Queen as Vader managed to open Amidala's tomb, which Olié and the Amidalans had failed to protect.

Personality and traits

Olié was a naturally skilled pilot who could fly any craft on Naboo. He deeply respected his queen and always honored her decisions. While he followed Panaka's orders, Olié's opinions were always valued.

Behind the scenes

Ric Olié first appeared as a character in the 1999 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, where he was portrayed by Ralph Brown. Some fans call him "Captain Obvious" because his dialogue often states obvious facts, like "There's the blockade!", "That's it… Tatooine," and "We didn't hit it!"

Brown returns to his role in the 2022 video game LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which features Olié as a playable Hero class character. The game continues his habit of stating the obvious. Olié's dialogue for whether the in-game character has the necessary abilities to perform a specific task are "I am able to help" and "I can't do that." When obtaining a collectable item, the character says either "I have found it and will take it with me" or "I've collected something." In the game's adaptation of The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan Kenobi says Olié's line from the film that Coruscant was "one big city."
