Skirmish in Guavian Death Space

During the time of the First Order-Resistance War, a brief battle took place at the edge of Guavian-controlled space in an asteroid field. The Colossus refueling station was the target of the Guavian Death Gang's forces. While attempting to slip past the criminal syndicate by navigating the asteroid field, the space station was detected by a Guavian scout. Subsequently, Guavian forces intercepted the station, demanding a toll of 1 million credits to allow passage, or face seizure of the station and the surrender of its inhabitants to the First Order. Captain Imanuel Doza declined the Guavian leader's demands, leading Ace Squadron to engage the criminals. Ultimately, they succeeded in destroying the majority of the Guavian starships, enabling the Colossus to reach open space and escape.

Prelude

Before the First Order-Resistance War occurred, the First Order planned to utilize the Colossus supertanker fuel depot, situated on Castilon, as a supply route for their fleet with the intention of invading the galaxy. They orchestrated a kidnapping attempt targeting Captain Imanuel Doza's daughter, Torra, to coerce Captain Doza into accepting a First Order occupation. Following the Hosnian Cataclysm, Team Colossus, under the leadership of Kazuda Xiono, Jarek Yeager, and Captain Doza, ousted the First Order and maneuvered the Colossus into uncharted space.

As a consequence, the First Order initiated a hunt aimed at locating the Colossus, with the intent of commandeering the space station for their war operations. During its evasion of the First Order, the Colossus was forced to traverse Guavian Death Space. The most expedient route out of Guavian territory involved navigating through an asteroid field. Captain Doza assigned Ace Squadron pilots Hype Fazon, Torra, and Xiono the task of scouting the asteroid field to confirm the absence of Guavian patrols and eliminate any encountered.

The skirmish

Into hostile space

While navigating the asteroid field, Xiono and CB-23, flying in their racer Fireball, came across a Guavian ship. Fazon instructed Xiono to maintain visual contact with the Guavian starship. Xiono attempted to disrupt the starship's systems, but the Fireball's systems malfunctioned, causing Xiono to be forced against the viewscreen due to the internal gravity. Consequently, the Guavian starship was able to escape without difficulty. Due to a disagreement with the Nikto Leoz, Xiono became convinced that he was under a curse due to a recent series of mishaps, compounded by his friend Neeku Vozo's belief in such superstitions.

Captain Doza reprimanded Xiono for allowing the Guavian ship to escape, thereby jeopardizing the Colossus. After an unsuccessful attempt to persuade Leoz to remove the curse, Xiono sought out the archaeologist and spiritualist Mika Grey. Grey succeeded in alleviating Xiono's anxieties by presenting him with a wooden talisman as a good luck charm.

Shortly afterward, a group of Guavian starships approached the Colossus. The Guavian leader demanded that Captain Doza pay a fee of 1 million credits or surrender the ship to the Guavian Death Gang. Upon Doza's refusal, the Guavian leader threatened to seize the ship and hand over its inhabitants to the First Order. Given the Colossus's inability to execute a hyperspace jump due to the density of the asteroid field, Doza mobilized Ace Squadron.

The dogfight

The entire Ace Squadron was deployed to defend the Colossus, including Fazon, Torra, Freya Fenris, Bo Keevil, and Griff Halloran. Xiono and CB-23 were delayed, but managed to board the Fireball in time to participate in the battle, Xiono inadvertently dropping the talisman on the hangar floor in his haste to reach his fighter. The Aces were supported by the Colossus' turbolaser cannons. Under Captain Doza's direction, the Aces led the Guavian starships away from the station, maneuvering them around the asteroid field.

Despite having left his lucky charm behind, Xiono managed to regain his composure. While being pursued by two Guavian ships, he successfully shot an [asteroid](/article/asteroid], causing his pursuers to collide with the resulting debris. Xiono then rescued Keevil from two Guavian pursuers, shooting down the enemy fighters. Having earned back the confidence of his fellow pilots, Xiono persuaded them to lure the Guavian ships further into the asteroid field, as they were less agile than the Aces' racing starfighters. Several Guavian ships were destroyed by laser fire or collisions with asteroids.

Ace Squadron's efforts allowed the Colossus to approach the edge of the asteroid field, where the space was clear enough for a hyperspace jump. Upon reaching the opening, Captain Doza instructed the Aces to return to the station. The Aces successfully landed their ships in the hangar just before the Colossus jumped into hyperspace.

Aftermath

The Guavian Death Gang failed in their attempt to capture the Colossus and suffered the loss of several starships. Only two ships survived the skirmish, and they were unable to track the Colossus through hyperspace. Upon returning to the Aces' hangar, Xiono discovered his good luck charm and realized that he did not require it. He concluded that Leoz's curse had been imaginary and that he had misinterpreted the recent series of accidents as a sign of being cursed. Following Grey's advice that a curse only exists in a person's mind, Xiono handed his talisman to Leonz, claiming it was cursed. This frightened the superstitious pirate, who attempted to pass it on to others, including Garma and Bolza Grool.
