CB-23

CB-23, an astromech droid of the BB-series line, possessed feminine programming and served the Resistance during the events of 34 ABY. She was assigned to Commander Poe Dameron while BB-8 was situated on the Colossus with Kazuda Xiono. After Dameron retrieved BB-8 prior to embarking on a mission to Jakku, CB-23 took his place in the mission on the Colossus platform.

Biography

During her first mission with Kaz, CB-23 piloted a red T-70 X-wing starfighter

CB-23, an astromech droid belonging to the BB-series, was active within the Resistance by 34 ABY. She was assigned to Commander Poe Dameron as a temporary replacement after his usual droid, BB-8, was temporarily assigned to the Colossus platform to monitor the newly recruited spy Kazuda Xiono. CB-23 was manufactured sometime before these events.

Incident in Sector six

CB-23 on a mission with Poe Dameron and BB-8

Dameron, accompanied by CB-23, briefly visited Castilon to check on Xiono and take him on a flight. CB-23 piloted a T-70 X-wing starfighter, which Xiono had been loaned. During the flight, the pilots and droids encountered a derelict Darius G-class freighter within an asteroid field near the planet, prompting an investigation. Initially, CB-23 and BB-8 did not get along well during the search, but their relationship improved after BB-8 dealt with a bothersome Kowakian monkey-lizard that was annoying CB-23. Subsequently, she located a survivor, Synara San, aboard the ship, directing Xiono to her hiding place. Upon returning to Castilon, she and BB-8 exchanged farewells before she and Dameron departed in the X-wings.

First Order entanglements

CB-23's next encounter with BB-8 and Xiono occurred when they met with the Resistance to deliver intelligence regarding the First Order's proposal to Imanuel Doza. Her reunion with BB-8 prompted Dameron to jokingly refer to them as "lovedroids." When Dameron was dispatched on a mission to investigate coordinates in the Unknown Regions, CB-23 accompanied him in his X-wing. Upon discovering a mining facility, Station Theta Black, at the specified coordinates, CB-23 scanned the facility and found no signs of life or active droids. Dameron and Xiono landed inside to investigate, while CB-23 concealed both X-wings in a nearby asteroid field, awaiting a signal for pickup. When the First Order arrived at the facility, scheduled for demolition that day, she spotted them and immediately alerted BB-8, who warned Dameron and Xiono. Ordered to bring the fighters in, she piloted them past Major Elrik Vonreg and his squadron of TIE fighters. After Dameron, Xiono, and BB-8 boarded their respective fighters, the four Resistance members fled the area and reported back to base.

Mission to the Dassal system

Following the First Order's occupation of the Colossus, Dameron returned to Castilon to retrieve BB-8, who was assigned to accompany him on a mission to Jakku. He informed Xiono that he had brought CB-23 along to fill BB-8's role on his mission. After Xiono shared intelligence with Dameron regarding First Order activity in a star system, Dameron decided to bring Xiono along to investigate the system. CB-23 accompanied Dameron in his X-wing for the mission. Upon landing on a previously inhabited moon, Dameron instructed CB-23 to remain with his X-wing and the Fireball, keeping them ready for a potential hasty departure.

Shortly after, when the destruction of a spider probe droid led to the arrival of a squadron of TIE fighters, Dameron ordered CB-23 to prepare his X-wing for takeoff, and she maneuvered the ship before picking up Dameron. After Xiono and Dameron eliminated most of their pursuers, believing all of them to be dead, they executed a mid-space maneuver to exchange their droids, with CB-23 and BB-8 exchanging farewells as they passed each other. Dameron informed Xiono that CB-23 would guide him in sneaking back onto the Colossus. Upon Xiono's return to Yeager's repairs, his unsuspecting colleagues Tamara Ryvora and Neeku Vozo inquired about BB-8's whereabouts, prompting him to claim that he had left the droid for repairs on Takodana, and that CB-23 was intended as a temporary substitute. Ryvora expressed suspicion, but Xiono and CB-23 departed, with Xiono claiming he would show her around.

Behind enemy lines

While becoming involved in Team Fireball's life on the occupied platform, CB-23 assisted Ryvora, Bucket, and Xiono in repairing the battle damage sustained by the Fireball in the Dassal system. Ryvora grew suspicious upon realizing the damage was carbon scoring, and Xiono's attempt to attribute it to a severe atmospheric re-entry was unconvincing. After Colossus residents, including top Ace Hype Fazon and Aunt Z, began to disappear following the First Order's pressure on Captain Imanuel Doza to cancel all future races due to a vague security threat, Xiono, CB-23, and Torra Doza decided to investigate. CB-23 aided in distracting stormtroopers by delivering a box of gorgs, while Xiono and Torra infiltrated Hype's garage and deduced that the First Order had abducted him.

Upon learning from Jarek Yeager and Captain Doza that the prisoners were being held on the West Docks, Xiono, Torra, and CB-23 embarked on a mission to rescue them that evening, utilizing a network of pipes suspended beneath the platform to move undetected. CB-23 rescued Xiono after he nearly slipped and fell, with Torra's assistance. Xiono requested that she remain behind in case her assistance was needed during the operation. Following the successful rescue of the prisoners, who escaped Castilon on a stolen AAL-1971/9.1 Troop Transport, Xiono and CB-23 parted ways with Torra. However, upon returning to the repair shop, they discovered that Commander Pyre had led a squad of stormtroopers to arrest Team Fireball, holding Yeager, Ryvora, and Vozo at blaster-point.

On the run

Commander Pyre informed Team Fireball that they were being arrested for plotting against the First Order. He also presented evidence that the Fireball had violated Sector Epsilon 51-3. Before Pyre could take them into custody, Bucket, acting on Yeager's command, released a white foam, enabling CB-23 and Team Fireball to escape. Although they managed to flee into the lower levels of the Colossus, Tamara Ryvora surrendered herself, believing the situation to be a misunderstanding.

CB-23 and the others sought refuge on the engineering deck, where they found shelter with Kel, Eila, and the Chelidae, who had also rescued Bucket. After Kaz persuaded the others to support his plan to submerge the Colossus so that he and Yeager could send a distress call to the Resistance, CB-23 relayed a message to Captain Doza, informing him of Kaz's plan.

After the Colossus had been submerged, CB-23 accompanied Kaz and Yeager on a mission to reach the communications jammer at the top of Doza Tower. This involved swimming through the sea. Working together, the trio managed to reach the top of Doza Tower. Though they managed to send a signal to the Resistance, Yeager was captured. CB-23 and Kaz escaped and returned to the engineering deck. General Leia Organa responded to Kaz's distress call, but apologized that she was unable to send reinforcements. In response, Kaz formed the Colossus resistance.

Retaking the Colossus

Following the formation of the Colossus Resistance, CB-23 was informed of Kaz's plan to liberate Yeager and Captain Doza and escape in order to bring back New Republic reinforcements from Hosnian Prime. Kaz and CB-23 attempted to reach Doza Tower by swimming, but were spotted by a pair of First Order SCUBA troopers. Following a confrontation, they escaped after Neeku pressurized the corridor, sucking the SCUBA troopers into the sea.

Kaz made his way up to Doza Tower through the tunnels of the Colossus. On the way, he and CB-23 reunited with Kaz's friend Torra Doza, Captain Doza's daughter. While sneaking through the Colossus's corridors, the trio watched a First Order broadcast showing the destruction of Kaz's homeworld of Hosnian Prime, dealing a major blow to the New Republic.

Though Kaz was distraught by the destruction of his homeworld, he and his team resolved to continue their mission. CB-23 helped Kaz and Torra to free Yeager and Captain Doza from their cells. CB-23 then helped Kaz and Torra to flush out stormtroopers in coordination with Neeku and his team, who flooded the station's corridors.

Later, CB-23 accompanied Kaz and Torra at the top of Doza Tower. Kaz attempted to reason with Tamara Ryvora, who had been won over by the First Order Security Bureau Agent Tierny. However, Tamara was angry at Kaz and Yeager for keeping secrets from her and chose to join the First Order. When First Order stormtroopers cornered Kaz and Torra, CB-23 squirted oil, causing the stormtroopers to fall onto the landing platform.

After Neeku and his team managed to start the engines, CB-23 flew with Kaz in the racer Fireball alongside Yeager, the Ace Squadron and the Warbird gang. They defended the Colossus against Major Elrik Vonreg's squadron. During the dogfight, Kaz managed to shoot down Major Vonreg's TIE interceptor. Following the dogfight, CB-23 and the others returned to the Colossus, which jumped into hyperspace.

Shortly after initiating the jump to hyperspace, CB-23, together with "Bucket," gazed in amazement at the hyperspace tunnel before the ship finally exited hyperspace.

Characteristics

CB-23

CB-23, a BB-series astromech droid, featured a spherical chassis, feminine programming, and red-blue plating. Initially, she harbored jealousy towards BB-8, but her appreciation for her fellow droid grew after he rescued her from a marauding Kowakian monkey-lizard. Subsequently, the two became friends.

CB-23 demonstrated loyalty to Kaz, accompanying him on numerous missions and adventures aboard the Colossus. She possessed the ability to operate underwater and deploy oil as a self-defense mechanism.

Her mode of communication involved "warbling."

Behind the scenes

CB-23 is a character that was conceived for Star Wars Resistance. Her debut occurred in the episode "Signal from Sector Six." During the early phases of the episode's development, the droid was named BB-23, but it was later changed to CB-23 as a tribute to Carrie Beck, Vice President of Development within the Lucasfilm Story Group, due to concerns that having two droids with the "BB" designation would cause confusion. Although CB-23 is not among the pre-built droids available at the Droid Depot in the Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge attraction, she can be seen in one of the shop's displays, and the parts necessary to construct a droid identical to her are accessible to customers.
