Mission on the Colossus platform

The assignment on the Colossus platform, also known as the assignment on Castilon, was a mission initiated by the Resistance during the Cold War. Its objective was to infiltrate the Colossus refueling station, situated on the ocean planet Castilon, and identify individuals aiding the First Order in expanding their military capabilities.

Background

In the year 33 ABY, the Resistance acquired information indicating that someone residing on the planet Castilon was providing support to the First Order, specifically in the development of their military forces.

Concurrently, a trio of New Republic pilots embarked on a mission to meet with Commander Poe Dameron to deliver this crucial intelligence. Following an ambush orchestrated by the First Order's Major Elrik Vonreg, two of the pilots, Mia Gabon and Hugh Sion, were instructed to retreat by the third pilot, Kazuda Xiono. Xiono volunteered to delay Vonreg, believing that the mission's success only required one pilot. Dameron intervened just as Xiono was about to be shot down by Vonreg, forcing the red-armored pilot to escape in his TIE.

Aboard a Resistance corvette, Xiono handed over the intelligence. After Dameron consulted with General Leia Organa, the enthusiastic Xiono expressed his desire to join the Resistance. Dameron accepted and assigned Xiono to the undercover mission, noting that the Colossus refueling platform, the primary population center of Castilon, featured a lively racing scene. Before departing on his mission, Kazuda briefly contacted his father, Senator Hamato Xiono, informing him of his involvement with the Resistance. However, Hamato remained skeptical, leading Kazuda to end the call prematurely.

The mission

Arrival on the Colossus

Kaz racing Torra Doza

Dameron escorted Xiono to the Colossus, with the intention of asking his long-time friend, former Rebel and New Republic pilot Jarek Yeager, to employ Xiono as a mechanic at his repair shop to aid in his disguise. Having lived a protected life on Hosnian Prime as a senator's son, Xiono was unprepared for the harsh realities of life on the Colossus. He made an awkward start when Neeku Vozo, one of Yeager's employees, took his statement about imagining himself as "Kazuda Xiono, the greatest pilot in the Galaxy" literally and began spreading the word throughout the station.

At Aunt Z's Tavern, Xiono became involved in a fight after falling victim to a rigged dart game orchestrated by the con artist Grevel, which made Yeager less enthusiastic about hiring him. Furthermore, after clarifying to Vozo that his claim of being the greatest pilot in the Galaxy was untrue, Xiono found himself entered into a race for the following day. This was due to an attempt to apologize to the literal-minded Nikto which led to Vozo deciding to help him become the best pilot on the station, despite Xiono's lack of a ship. After Dameron departed, entrusting his droid BB-8 to watch over him, Xiono was informed by Vozo and Yeager that refusing to race would result in him being thrown off the platform and into the ocean.

Xiono chose Torra Doza, the youngest of the Colossus' five Aces, as his competitor for the solo race. At Yeager's shop, he and his team had to work quickly to repair an old, dilapidated ship, the Fireball, to ensure it was ready in time. Yeager's other employee, Tamara Ryvora, resented Xiono's presence, believing that the shop could not afford another worker and feeling slighted as Yeager had promised her the Fireball if she fixed it up. In the race, Xiono performed admirably but crashed after pushing the Fireball's engines beyond their limits.

Stopping Kragan Gorr's attack

The Warbird gang attacks the Colossus

Xiono struggled to adjust to life on the station and his role as a mechanic and pilot due to his lack of mechanical skills, which made Ryvora suspicious of him and frustrated Yeager. Kazuda also faced issues with the Aleena con artist Grevel, who believed Xiono owed him money from a rigged game of holo-darts. Xiono found solace in BB-8 and Neeku, the friendliest member of the Fireball team.

Shortly after Xiono's arrival, a Neimoidian customer named Hallion Nark visited Yeager's repairs, ostensibly to repair his ship. In reality, Nark was a member of Kragan Gorr's Warbird gang, pirates who terrorized Castilon. His mission was to assess the conditions on Castilon, including the likelihood of a severe storm, or "triple dark," at the Colossus. Suspecting Nark's motives, Xiono "accidentally" knocked his comlink into a drain.

Xiono's suspicions regarding Hallion were confirmed when Gorr and his pirate gang attacked the Colossus during a "triple dark" storm. Captain Imanuel Doza deployed Ace Squadron, but the racers proved ineffective against the pirates. While grappling with Grevel, Xiono and the Aleena fell off the platform and landed on Gorr's modified shuttle. Gorr's pilot Synara San dislodged them, and they landed back on the platform. With BB-8's assistance, Xiono managed to return to Yeager's repair shop.

There, Xiono realized that Nark had been using his comlink to communicate with the pirates. Xiono used the comlink to transmit a feedback loop through the pirates' communication channel, disorienting them. Gorr was forced to order a tactical retreat, and the pirates fled. Despite his role in saving the Colossus, Kaz was not believed by Yeager and the rest of Team Fireball. The Warbirds' First Order superiors, Captain Phasma and Major Elrik Vonreg, were displeased with their performance. Nark was punished for losing his comlink.

A target of thieves

Jace Rucklin and his crew caused Kaz trouble

Xiono, due to the circumstances surrounding his arrival on the station, quickly gained a reputation. The racer Jace Rucklin and his team, Lin Gaava and Gorrak Wiles, saw an opportunity in Xiono's arrival. The trio had long planned to steal a batch of hyperfuel that they knew Yeager possessed and had used in races, as Rucklin desired every advantage to climb the rankings. However, they knew that Yeager and his staff, Vozo, Ryvora, and the astromech droid R1-J5 "Bucket," would not allow them near their shop due to their questionable reputation.

Upon learning that he was working with Team Fireball, they sought an opportunity to approach Xiono, finding one while he was at Aunt Z's Tavern. They quickly befriended Xiono, capitalizing on his frustrations with his mechanical work, and Rucklin promptly challenged Xiono to a "friendly" speeder bike race. However, Rucklin had Wiles sabotage Xiono's bike so that when it "accidentally" malfunctioned, he could endear himself to Xiono by saving his life. When Xiono mentioned his new "friends" to Vozo at work later, Vozo attempted to warn Xiono about Rucklin's team's reputation, but Xiono, stressed by his work, dismissed the warnings and secretly met with Rucklin and his team. There, Rucklin pressured Xiono into sneaking him into Yeager's private hangar to see his racer, claiming that Xiono owed him for saving his life.

Later that day, Xiono, despite some reservations, snuck Rucklin into Yeager's office, avoiding Bucket, Yeager, and Ryvora in the process. However, the hangar door was locked, and Xiono told Rucklin that they were out of luck. While Xiono's back was turned, Rucklin stole the container of hyperfuel. When Xiono later discovered the theft, he realized that Rucklin was the culprit, as he was competing in a race later that day. Xiono and BB-8 had to rush to save Rucklin from himself, as he was unaware of the proper amount of hyperfuel to use and inadvertently turned his ship into a flying bomb. After Xiono, with assistance from BB-8 and Yeager, rescued Rucklin before his ship exploded, Rucklin showed no gratitude and vowed to retaliate against Xiono for the incident. Yeager chose not to fire Xiono, recognizing that he was a good person despite his mistake.

Into Doza Tower

Shortly thereafter, the Colossus experienced a fuel shortage, prompting Captain Imanuel Doza to shut down most of the station's power to conserve fuel while awaiting a new shipment. Consequently, Xiono overheard Aunt Z expressing her belief that Doza was secretly working for the First Order and deliberately causing the shortage. This led Xiono to attempt to enter Doza Tower to spy on him. After witnessing the arrival of a First Order freighter carrying a fuel shipment and Major Vonreg, who had come to speak with Captain Doza, Xiono managed to secure an invitation to the Aces' Lounge inside the tower from Hype Fazon, one of the Aces and a former friend of Ryvora.

In the lounge, Xiono discreetly followed Vonreg and his stormtroopers while Fazon and Ryvora argued about the Fireball, trailing them to the door of Doza's office. Discovering that the door was locked, Xiono slipped a comlink onto the tray of a serving droid and eavesdropped from outside the office. He learned that the First Order was attempting to coerce Captain Doza into making a deal with them. Doza informed Vonreg that he could report them to the New Republic, but Vonreg countered that the First Order could inform the Republic about Doza's illicit dealings with criminals. In response, Doza stated that the First Order would need to offer more than a single fuel shipment to buy him, and the meeting concluded with several veiled threats from Vonreg.

Xiono's presence was detected by Vonreg and his troopers when the two comlinks he was using to eavesdrop created a loud noise due to their proximity while both were active, forcing him to flee. He ended up running into Torra's bedroom, where she assumed he had come because he was attracted to her, and rejected him before helping him escape through the window. Xiono was then forced to carefully navigate several narrow ledges on the outside of the tower, as Ryvora, Vozo, and everyone else in Aunt Z's Tavern watched. He was discovered by the stormtroopers and fired upon. With BB-8's assistance, he safely returned inside. However, Vonreg learned that there was a spy on the Colossus, and Captain Doza became aware that Xiono was up to something.

The survivors of Tehar

Xiono meets Kel and Eila

While working on the Fireball, Xiono accidentally broke a valuable acceleration compensator that Ryvora had acquired for the ship, infuriating her. Xiono promised to replace it, but he lacked the funds to even buy a glass of water at Aunt Z's, let alone an expensive compensator. He then overheard two men discussing a 20,000-credit bounty placed on two missing children, prompting Xiono to search for them, both for the money and because it was the right thing to do. Unbeknownst to Xiono, the children, siblings Eila and Kel, were being hunted by the First Order, who had offered the bounty, as they were the only survivors of the destruction of their village on their homeworld Tehar, and the First Order sought to conceal the atrocity.

Kel and Eila were, in fact, on the Colossus, and Xiono and Vozo, whom he had enlisted for help, were knocked down by the siblings while they were fleeing the Colossus marketplace. They ran away when Xiono approached them and offered help, so he and Vozo recruited the Chelidae engineering staff to locate the children. At this point, Xiono was summoned to the tower by Captain Doza, who, suspicious from the earlier incident in the tower, questioned him about his search for the kids. Xiono was truthful, but Doza, still suspicious, did not believe him, though he concealed his doubts from Xiono. Kel had lost a charm with a carved symbol on it earlier, and Xiono gave it to Doza. Subsequently, Doza, in an attempt to maintain cordial relations with the First Order, informed Captain Phasma that the children had been sighted on the Colossus, and she dispatched Commander Pyre and a squad of stormtroopers to the platform.

The Chelidae found Eila and Kel, bringing them to engineering. When Xiono and Vozo arrived and spoke with them, they learned about the destruction of the siblings' homeworld and that the attack had been led by Kylo Ren. Xiono promised to assist them in escaping. However, when Xiono and Vozo accompanied Kel back to the market to purchase medicinal herbs for Eila's broken leg, they were spotted by Pyre and his troopers, who pursued them back to engineering. Cornered, Xiono devised a plan to fake the siblings' deaths. When Pyre and his troopers entered, they saw the children standing before an open grate leading to the ocean below, and when Pyre ordered them to come with him, Kel refused before he and Eila seemingly jumped to their deaths. In reality, they landed in a maintenance area below, while two Chelidae jumped into the water. The shellfolk slowed their vital signs to deceive the stormtroopers' scanners, and Pyre departed, reporting to Phasma that the children were "no more." The Chelidae offered Kel and Eila shelter, and Xiono reported everything to the Resistance.

The pirate spy

The Warbirds' second raid on the Colossus.

Xiono's report regarding Doza's potential dealings with the First Order prompted Dameron to visit him, taking him flying in a borrowed X-wing. While out with their astromech droids, they received a distress call from a Darius G-class freighter and investigated, rescuing a woman, Synara San, from the ship and bringing her to the Colossus, where Xiono and Yeager registered her. Unbeknownst to Xiono and his friends, San was actually a member of the Warbird gang, providing her and the gang with a perfect opportunity to place a spy on the platform.

San's first opportunity arose a few weeks later. Under orders to blend in, she secured a job working with the salvagers on the Colossus' loading docks. Xiono and Ryvora approached her in search of a CoMar Tri-Tracker chip, as Team Fireball had been secretly contracted to repair the targeting computer for the platform defenses. This led San to discover that the defenses were offline.

After the Aces departed to escort an important shipment, she signaled Gorr to launch another attack on the platform. Gorr and his Warbirds raided the platform, causing significant damage to the loading area and marketplace. While Ryvora went to the docks to find her friend Synara, Xiono and Yeager proceeded to install the repaired targeting computer into the missile systems. During the installation, Xiono and Yeager were harassed by Gorr and his pirates.

Despite fierce resistance, they managed to reactivate the missile defense system, forcing the pirates to retreat. Meanwhile, Tam and Synara joined forces to fight the pirates. As a result, Synara gained Tam's trust. Due to the timing of the second pirate attack coinciding with the Aces' absence, Kaz suspected that there was a pirate spy aboard the Colossus but did not suspect Synara. Meanwhile, Captain Doza, concerned about the vulnerability of the Colossus, was compelled to reconsider the First Order's offer of protection.

Befriending Torra Doza

Xiono befriended Torra Doza during his second mission to Doza Tower

Prior to Commander Pyre's scheduled visit to the Colossus, Xiono and BB-8 received instructions from Dameron to find any information linking Captain Doza to the First Order. While attempting to enter Doza Tower's secret entrance, Xiono encountered Captain Doza's daughter Torra. The younger Doza, frustrated by her father's strict protective measures, wished to visit the local marketplace.

Seeking to gain Torra's trust, Xiono agreed to accompany her. Torra was forced to cut her trip to the market short due to hostility from local merchants and customers, who expressed dissatisfaction with her father's decision to cancel races, a vital source of revenue for the local economy. Returning to her room, Torra invited Xiono to the lounge where the Aces socialized. Xiono was spotted by Rucklin, now working there, who remained bitter about the loss of his racer.

Later, Xiono played the flight simulator game Flight Simulator Squadron with Torra. When 4D-M1N entered the room, Xiono managed to hide. 4D identified BB-8 as a threat, but Torra managed to calm her down. While Torra was occupied, Xiono infiltrated Doza's office while BB-8 kept watch. Xiono successfully downloaded information from Doza's datapad onto a flash drive.

However, Rucklin alerted Captain Doza to the presence of an intruder in his office, forcing Xiono to hide in a closet. Inside, Xiono discovered an Imperial officer's uniform, indicating that Captain Doza had served in the Imperial Military. After Doza and Rucklin left, Xiono and BB-8 sneaked out of Doza Tower with Torra's help, who extracted a promise from Xiono to reveal his purpose in her father's office.

While exiting Doza Tower, the two were trapped in the trash incinerator. After escaping the incinerator, Xiono denied being a spy and claimed that he had left the New Republic Navy to pursue a racing career. Although Torra outwardly accepted his explanation, she privately questioned his account.

The phase connector heist

Xiono denied the First Order access to a phase connector by downing Teroj's freighter

Following the Bibo incident, Commander Pyre dispatched the Keteerian mercenary Teroj Kee to steal a phase connector from Flix and Orka's starship parts business, "Office of Acquisitions." The First Order intended to use the phase connector to break open asteroids and planetoids for mining purposes. Teroj exploited Flix and Orka's short vacation to visit the store and steal the phase connector.

However, Xiono was watching the store. Unable to deceive Xiono into handing over the phase connector, Teroj trapped Xiono inside a crate and sent it crashing into the sea. He then entered the store and stole the phase connector after a struggle with BB-8. Teroj then departed aboard a Darius G-class freighter with three First Order stormtroopers. Teroj, however, underestimated Xiono, who managed to free himself.

Xiono stowed away aboard the departing freighter with Flix and Orka's pet gorg Bitey. Bitey used his sharp teeth to disable the power cables to the ship's engines, causing the freighter to crash into the sea. Xiono and Bitey escaped, as did Teroj and most of his stormtroopers. However, the freighter and its phase connector cargo were lost.

Flix and Orka were pleased with Xiono for preventing Teroj and his First Order handlers from obtaining the phase connector but tasked Xiono with cleaning up the store. Xiono later filed a report on the phase connector incident with General Organa. Teroj incurred the wrath of Commander Pyre, who ordered him to return to headquarters immediately.

Kidnapping of Torra Doza

The First Order staged the kidnapping and rescue of Torra Doza to convince Captain Doza to accept their "protection".

To pressure Captain Doza into accepting the First Order's "protection" for the Colossus, Commander Pyre and Captain Phasma engaged Gorr and the Warbirds to abduct Torra. Gorr, still smarting from previous unsuccessful raids, stipulated triple payment as his condition. Subsequently, Kragan contacted Synara San, his informant in the area, instructing her to meet Drell and Valik at the docking bays.

Having cultivated Torra's confidence, Synara facilitated Drell and Valik's entry by unlocking the doors of Doza Tower, enabling them to abduct Torra and flee on speeder bikes. Experiencing a change of heart, Synara alerted Xiono, who gave chase to the pirates in the Fireball. Synara also informed Captain Doza, who dispatched Ace Squadron to intercept the pirates. Drell and Valik successfully moved their captive onto a skiff, abandoning their speeder bikes as a distraction.

Xiono and BB-8 pursued them in the Fireball, but had to maintain a safe distance due to the fragile condition of their racer, which sustained some damage. Drell and Valik soon met up with Kragan Gorr's sail barge, the Galleon. As Kaz observed, a First Order Upsilon-class command shuttle landed on the Galleon. Kragan and his crew anticipated receiving their compensation, but Major Elrik Vonreg and his forces instead assaulted the pirates, rescuing Torra and subduing Drell and Skreek.

Major Vonreg brought Torra back to her father, reiterating the First Order's offer of protection. Faced with the threat to his daughter's safety, Captain Doza conceded to a First Order presence on the Colossus. Meanwhile, Synara discovered from Kragan that the First Order had betrayed the Warbirds. Consequently, Kaz began to suspect Synara's involvement with the pirates.

Aftermath

The First Order occupation

First Order stormtroopers on the Colossus.

Following Torra Doza's rescue, the First Order managed to persuade Captain Doza to permit their occupation of the Colossus. The First Order deployed stormtrooper units and TIE fighters to the Colossus. Stormtroopers initiated identification checks on the platform's inhabitants, while travel and communications beyond the platform were restricted. While some residents, like Tam Ryvora, welcomed the increased security provided by the First Order, others, such as Kaz and Yeager, understood that the First Order aimed to utilize the Colossus in their campaign to reclaim control of the galaxy.

The First Order's decision to prohibit racing, a vital aspect of the local economy and social life, sparked significant local resistance. In response to escalating restrictions, protestors threw fruit at First Order stormtroopers. Some outspoken residents, including Aunt Z and Ace Leader Hype Fazon, confronted First Order personnel in anger. Captain Doza grew concerned about the First Order's increasingly totalitarian control, but Commander Pyre progressively sidelined him. The First Order intended to establish a larger garrison. Residents would be permitted to remain as long as they did not oppose the First Order.

Acts of resistance

Kaz, Torra Doza, and CB-23 resisted First Order rule

In the early phases of the occupation, Kaz aided Synara San in escaping a First Order manhunt, enabling her to rejoin her fellow pirates. Later, Kel and Eila incapacitated the stormtrooper CS-515 during a failed arrest attempt. To ensure that the stormtrooper had not reported them, Kaz stole CS-515's armor and infiltrated the First Order. He then acquired a data memory containing details about the First Order's fleet movements, which he shared with Yeager.

Despite the occupation, Resistance pilot Poe Dameron still successfully infiltrated the Colossus. He and Kaz then embarked on a mission to investigate First Order activity in the Dassal system. Kaz subsequently returned with the Fireball and the BB-series astromech droid CB-23 as a minder, as BB-8 had departed with Poe on a sensitive mission.

During a crackdown, the First Order apprehended several citizens, including Hype Fazon, Aunt Z, Nod, and Grevel. However, Kaz and Torra rescued them; they were now aware that Yeager and Captain Doza were collaborating to find a way to contact the Resistance. However, Commander Pyre discovered that the Fireball had been involved in incursions into First Order territory and ordered the arrest of Team Fireball.

While Tam surrendered to the First Order, Kaz, Yeager, Neeku, CB-23, and Bucket managed to flee to the engineering deck, where they were joined by Kel, Eila, and the Chelidae. Working with Captain Doza, the rebels lowered the Colossus into the ocean. Although Kaz and CB-23 managed to contact General Leia Organa, General Organa was unable to dispatch reinforcements to Castilon, despite receiving their message.

Escaping Castilon

The Escape of the Colossus from Castilon.

Despite the overwhelming odds, Kaz was determined to liberate Yeager and Tam, reclaim the Colossus, and drive out the First Order. Kaz and his followers established a resistance movement, which initiated an underground campaign against the First Order. Meanwhile, the First Order arrested Captain Doza for insubordination, imprisoning him and Ace Squadron. Agent Tierny of the First Order Security Bureau also exploited Tam's distrust of Yeager and Kaz, persuading her to align with the First Order.

After freeing Yeager and Captain Doza, Kaz and Torra collaborated with Neeku to dislodge First Order stormtroopers. While Neeku and his team prepared the Colossus' hyperdrive, Kaz and his allies attempted to rescue Tam, but she remained resentful of their secrecy and chose the First Order. As the Colossus ascended into the atmosphere, Kaz and Yeager joined forces with Ace Squadron and Kragan Gorr's Warbird gang to defend the station from First Order TIE fighters and a Resurgent-class Destroyer.

Following a dogfight, Kaz and his allies successfully guided the Colossus into hyperspace. While Neeku had intended to travel to D'Qar, he lacked the time to input all the coordinates, sending the station and its inhabitants into the unknown. During his mission aboard the Colossus, Kaz uncovered the First Order's intentions for the station. He spearheaded a resistance movement that expelled the First Order and moved the Colossus offworld.

Behind the scenes

The initial footage of the mission on the Colossus platform was showcased in the Star Wars Resistance first look trailer on August 17, 2018. The mission commenced in the show's premiere, "The Recruit," and constitutes a central theme of the show's first season.
