Bacara

Bacara, also referred to by his clone trooper designation CC-1138, was a clone trooper officer holding the military rank of Clone Marshal Commander within the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. Noted for his forceful strategies, Bacara functioned as the Clone Commander for the 21st Nova Corps, an exceptional division of clone troopers distinguished by their distinctive armor and persistent nature in battle.

Like all clone troopers originating from the extragalactic planet of Kamino, Bacara was cloned utilizing the genetic template of the human bounty hunter Jango Fett and underwent training as a soldier within an army serving the Galactic Republic. During the closing months of the Clone Wars, Bacara's Galactic Marines operated under the leadership of Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi, amidst the Republic's siege of Separatist strongholds situated in the Outer Rim Territories of the galaxy.

While engaged in battle on Mygeeto, Bacara and his troops received communication from Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, who informed them that Order 66 was in effect. Due to their clone nature, they were compelled by their programming to adhere to the directive without hesitation and, therefore, executed General Mundi, branding him as an enemy of the state. As the war concluded, the Republic that Bacara had served was supplanted by a new regime—the Galactic Empire, with the self-proclaimed Emperor Palpatine at its helm.

Biography

Early life

CC-1138, a clone derived from the bounty hunter Jango Fett, was both created and trained on the planet of [Kamino](/article/kamino]. It was there that he underwent training with a ex-Journeyman Protector, ultimately achieving the rank of Clone Marshal Commander. Following this initial training, he received further instruction from Advanced Recon Commandos and chose the designation "Bacara."

The Clone Wars

As the Clone Wars erupted between the Galactic Republic and the Separatist Alliance, Bacara took on the role of Clone Marshal Commander within the 21st Nova Corps, also recognized as the Galactic Marines, acting as second-in-command to Jedi General Ki-Adi-Mundi. Despite their participation in numerous battles together, Bacara frequently found himself at odds with Mundi. Eventually, Supreme Commander of the Droid Army General Grievous initiated a substantial offensive, triggering the Outer Rim Sieges. Subsequently, Bacara and Mundi were present at a briefing attended by Clone Marshal Commander Bly, Jedi Commander Caleb Dume, and Jedi Generals Depa Billaba, Aayla Secura, Plo Koon, Mace Windu, and Yoda.

During the latter stages of the Clone Wars, Bacara was featured on a propaganda poster titled Buy Republic War Bonds, utilized by the Grand Army of the Republic and created by Janyor of Bith.

Several months following the Third Battle of Mygeeto, which was part of the Mygeeto Campaign and occurred during the Outer Rim Sieges, Mundi, Bacara, and the 21st Nova Corps were redeployed to confront the Separatists once more, participating in the Fourth Battle of Mygeeto. Bacara and his clone troopers, supported by UT-ATs, engaged in combat against Separatist Octuptarra tri-droids and B2-series super battle droids on the planet's bridges, with Mundi and Bacara spearheading the assault.

Order 66

Bacara and his men open fire on Ki-Adi-Mundi, executing Order 66 without hesitation.

During the conflict, Bacara and his troops received Order 66 from Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, which declared the Jedi as traitors to the Republic. Although Bacara experienced a fleeting moment of disbelief, he did not question the order's validity and commanded his men to target their General. Consequently, he and his troopers opened fire on Mundi, resulting in his death.

Reflecting on his actions afterward, Bacara felt content with having executed the command, expressing his willingness to repeat the action against anyone perceived as a threat to the Republic. Following the demise of his Jedi General, Bacara and his forces continued their fight against the remaining Separatist forces on the planet, aiming to eliminate their presence entirely.

Personality and traits

Following his training with the Journeyman Protectors, Bacara was regarded as a solitary figure. Under Ki-Adi-Mundi's command, Bacara's exceptionally rigid and militaristic beliefs often clashed with Mundi's Jedi teachings. However, after numerous battles fought together, Mundi earned the reluctant respect of his subordinates, leading to a close professional bond between Bacara and the General. Despite experiencing a brief moment of doubt when ordered to kill Mundi, Bacara carried out the command and felt satisfied with his action, pleased to have eliminated a perceived threat to the Republic. As a Clone Marshal Commander, Bacara held authority over the entire 21st Nova Corps.

It was generally advised that high-ranking clone trooper officers should refrain from leading their troops from the front lines, or if they did, to remain inconspicuous due to their status as prime targets. Despite this recommendation, Bacara disregarded the practice, leading his unit from the forefront of any combat situation and sporting distinctive armor. Bacara was proficient in the use of various weapons, including the standard DC-17 hand blaster typically equipped by Clone Commanders. Bacara was known as a strict clone trooper officer, who made it a habit to reassign clone troopers who did not meet his standards, often without the approval of his Jedi General.

Equipment

By the Clone Wars' conclusion, Bacara was outfitted with modified Phase II clone trooper armor, with his specific armor set considered highly unique. His armor featured supplementary heated pads positioned over the air filtration units on his helmet to minimize heat loss through the helmet's air filtration systems in frigid and windy conditions. Additionally, his helmet incorporated a compact, high-powered communications antenna on its left side, enabling continuous contact with superiors even amidst intense combat, ensuring they were fully informed about his unit's status. Bacara's Phase II helmet included a polarized visor, and like other Phase II helmets, provided an enhanced field of view and supplementary display information on the HUD. While largely similar, the rear of Bacara's helmet exhibited sloping backside armor.

Bacara also wore a kama, secured by his standard utility belt. This belt typically carried emergency rations, spare parts, ammunition, and grenades. Furthermore, Bacara added a pauldron to his right shoulder, customized with the maroon colors of the 21st Nova Corps and held in place by a cross-strap across his chest. A heating system was integrated into the back of his armor, enhancing the temperature-controlled body glove worn beneath.

Bacara primarily used a DC-15A blaster rifle, the standard-issue weapon for clone troopers, in which he had complete confidence. He also occasionally carried a DC-17 hand blaster, although he did not typically include it as part of his combat gear, unlike many other Clone Commanders. Bacara also employed a DC-15A blaster carbine during combat situations.

Behind the scenes

CC-1138 "Bacara" made his initial canonical appearance in the 2005 film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. Although Bacara's numerical designation is not explicitly mentioned in the film, it was noted in the Episode III screenplay, where Bacara is identified as Commander 1138, a nod to George Lucas' debut feature film THX 1138.

Upon Bacara's debut in Revenge of the Sith, some observers noted the close resemblance between his helmet and armor and those of the snowtroopers from Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back. The armor worn by CC-1138 and the other Galactic Marines in Episode III drew inspiration from the snowtrooper designs featured in Episode V. Expanding on this influence, the open-facemask design of Bacara's helmet was originally conceived for clone tank drivers operating in harsh environments. Some concept art found in Jonathan W. Rinzler's The Art of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith identified CC-1138 as a "Clone Tank Driver." It's possible that CC-1138 was initially intended to command a HAVw A6 Juggernaut during the Order 66 sequence. In the shooting scripts, a HAVw A6 Juggernaut was slated to open fire on Yoda's command post on Kashyyyk.

While Bacara's appearance in the final cut is silent, the illustrated screenplay attributed two lines to him: "Yes, sir" and "It will be done, My Lord." Furthermore, the commander's actions were slightly expanded: he was to receive the command to execute the order from Darth Sidious via comlink and then close the comlink as he observed the city's main plaza before eliminating Ki-Adi-Mundi.
