Lessu battalion

A military unit composed of clone stormtroopers belonging to the Galactic Empire was positioned on the planet Ryloth, specifically in the vicinity of the capital city, Lessu City, during the early years of the Imperial Era. After Vice Admiral Rampart had overseen Project War-Mantle on Kamino, the admiral found himself on Ryloth alongside Clone Commander Crosshair and his Elite Squad. While there, Rampart held overall command of the Imperial forces. His manipulations and schemes, intended to portray Twi'lek General Cham Syndulla as a threat to Ryloth's security, led to several armed conflicts.

Description

Clones of the Ryloth battalion riding BARC speeders

This clone stormtrooper battalion had its base of operations on Ryloth, a planet situated in the Outer Rim and recognized as the homeworld of the Twi'lek species. Their area of operation centered around the [capital](/article/capital], Lessu City. The battalion made use of a variety of vehicles, including a minimum of five HCVw A9 turbo tanks, numerous BARC speeders, All Terrain Tactical Enforcers, different models of Nu-class attack/transport shuttles, and LAAT/i gunships. The battalion's personnel consisted of stormtroopers, several Imperial officers, and viper probe droids.

History

Maintaining Order

After the conclusion of the Clone Wars and the Galactic Republic's transition into the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY, the described battalion was stationed in Lessu on Ryloth. This deployment violated the promise made by the Republic to the Twi'lek Resistance, which stated that its army would be withdrawn after the Separatist Alliance was defeated. This decision was met with disapproval by members of the Twi'lek Resistance, including Gobi Glie. Stormtroopers from the battalion were assigned to guard the newly established doonium refinery of the Empire, as well as the [capital](/article/capital] of Lessu City on Ryloth.

Captain Howzer and his troops return Hera Syndulla to her father, General Cham Syndulla

A public announcement took place at Lessu's capitol building, with soldiers from the Ryloth battalion positioned around the assembled crowd. Orn Free Taa, Ryloth's senator, along with General Cham Syndulla, the leader of the Twi'lek Resistance, encouraged the population to surrender their weapons and rely on the clones for protection. Captain Howzer of the Ryloth battalion stood beside Syndulla during his speech. Simultaneously, stormtroopers discovered Cham's daughter, Hera Syndulla, trespassing near the refinery. Howzer, accompanied by some of his soldiers, escorted the young Twi'lek back to her father. The captain, choosing to not report the incident, advised Cham to ensure that such an occurrence would not repeat.

Apprehending Insurgents

Subsequently, Commander Crosshair located Glie, Hera, and Serin, who were engaged in smuggling weapons onto Ryloth using Glie's Rainhawk-class transport. A LAAT gunship belonging to the Ryloth battalion was deployed to intercept Glie's Rainhawk, which Crosshair then shot down utilizing his 773 Firepuncher rifle. After the LAAT had landed, stormtroopers from the battalion, supported by Crosshair's elite squad, took Glie, Hera, and Serin into custody. They were soon joined by an HCVw A9 turbo tank carrying Howzer, Senator Taa, and Vice Admiral Rampart, escorted by troopers riding BARC speeders. Upon seeing Cham's daughter among those arrested, Taa expressed a desire to exploit her involvement against Cham himself.

The three Twi'leks were taken aboard the turbo tank, which proceeded back towards Lessu via Sector 3 of the Western outskirts. However, Cham, leading Twi'lek reinforcements that included his wife Eleni Syndulla, eliminated the BARC speeders and commandeered the tank. With Rampart instructing his remaining forces to surrender, the vice admiral, Howzer, Taa, and two surviving stormtroopers were taken as prisoners. After Howzer and Eleni convinced Cham to refrain from killing Taa, Rampart signaled to Crosshair, who was positioned at a distance, to shoot the senator. Subsequently, three LAATs arrived with the battalion's reinforcements, leading to the capture of the Twi'leks, with the exception of Hera, who managed to escape on a landspeeder.

Combating Rogue Clones

Clones of the Ryloth battalion back Rampart during his speech

Howzer was tasked with locating Hera, but the young Twi'lek managed to evade capture by Imperial forces. Cham, Eleni, and their allies were detained in the holding cells of the capitol building. In a speech delivered to a gathering of Twi'leks in front of the capitol, Rampart falsely accused them of "attempted assassination" of Taa. Howzer and other soldiers of the battalion were stationed as guards during this event. Meanwhile, the rogue clone commando unit known as the "Bad Batch," who had arrived to assist Hera in rescuing her parents, were observing the public address. A probe droid detected and reported the presence of the rogue clones, but the lead commando Hunter neutralized the droid.

Hera, along with some members of the Bad Batch, then launched an attack on the doonium refinery, destroying its air defenses and engaging the battalion troops stationed there. This prompted the redeployment of troops from the battalion from the capitol building via Nu-class shuttles. Crosshair prevented his squad from departing, suspecting that the redeployments were a deliberate tactic by the Bad Batch to weaken the capitol's defenses. Consequently, the commander, along with his squad and members of Howzer's squad, set up a trap in front of the building's main exit. Two members of the Bad Batch successfully infiltrated the capitol and freed Cham and his associates.

Howzer is arrested along with the clones he convinced to defy the Empire

Howzer, having grown weary of the Empire's aggressive seizure of power on Ryloth, prevented the escapees from falling into Crosshair's trap, leading the fugitives to opt for escape on Taa's shuttle. To divert Crosshair and his trap, the captain stepped forward and denounced the Empire, asking who from his squad would join him. Six of Howzer's soldiers laid down their weapons and shields, prompting Crosshair to order their arrest by the remaining troops. Consequently, Howzer and the other six dissenting clones were led away at gunpoint, while the Bad Batch, Cham, and his fighters escaped Ryloth.

Behind the scenes

The battalion made its initial appearance in "Devil's Deal," the eleventh installment of the Disney+ animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch. It was directed by Steward Lee and broadcasted on July 9, 2021. Dee Bradley Baker, who provides the voice for every clone in The Bad Batch and other animated series, including Star Wars: The Clone Wars, voiced the clone troopers of the battalion.
