Nightsisters

title: Nightsisters

The Nightsisters constituted a faction of the Witches of Dathomir, distinguished by their dedication to the dark arts within their Force-imbued Magics. Initially, the Nightsisters emerged from various witch clans, choosing to harness the dark side in opposition to the light-sided principles upheld in the Book of Law—the primary sacred text of the Dathomiri. These witches embraced a shamanistic way of life, rejecting the concepts of "good" and "evil," and instead invoking the dual energies of the Winged Goddess and the Fanged God to practice their Magicks and communicate with the spirit realm. A significant focus was placed on mastering Force illusions through specialized "illusion spells." Witches found guilty of these forbidden practices faced banishment into Dathomir's harsh wilderness, effectively left to perish. However, as the Galactic Republic's final decades approached, the exiled witch Gethzerion leveraged her exceptional abilities to unify the scattered outcasts into a new clan—the Nightsisters.

Operating under a reinterpreted sacred text known as the Book of Shadows, these sorceresses exploited their potent bond with Dathomir's wild landscapes to instill fear in other clans and vie for control over the planet. While the witches harbored ambitions for galactic influence, their reach was largely limited to their home world, due to the Jedi Order's active interdiction of the planet. Internally, the Nightsisters were fragmented into numerous rival clans until approximately 32 BBY, when Clan mother Zalem attempted to utilize Dathomir's fabled Infinity Gate to obliterate Coruscant, the Galactic Republic's capital world. This scheme was thwarted, and Zalem was killed by her daughter, leading to the unification of the Nightsister clans into a single coven under the leadership of the shaman Mother Talzin. During the Clone Wars, the Nightsisters gained widespread notoriety when Talzin transformed her people into a mercenary organization, providing training in combat and Magick to sell their services as bodyguards, assassins, and soldiers to off-world clients.

This period of relative success ended when the clan became embroiled in the Clone Wars, following Talzin's failed attempt to assassinate Count Dooku using the former Sister Asajj Ventress. Dooku retaliated by dispatching General Grievous and an army of the Confederacy of Independent Systems to Dathomir, launching an assault on the Nightsisters' Fortress. The resulting battle nearly annihilated the Nightsisters, although enough survived to eventually reclaim their dominant position in Dathomir's affairs.

During the Imperial Period, the Galactic Empire maintained a substantial presence on Dathomir. However, after the Dark Lord of the Sith and Galactic Emperor Palpatine recognized the extent of the Nightsisters' power and the influence of their founder, Gethzerion, he reinstated the Jedi's earlier quarantine of the planet to prevent any witches from escaping. Despite Palpatine's efforts, many Nightsisters managed to flee Dathomir by forming alliances with the criminal Zann Consortium. In the final years of Palpatine's rule, Dathomir was placed under the command of Zsinj, an Imperial admiral who declared himself a warlord after Palpatine's demise in 4 ABY. Zsinj upheld the Emperor's imposed isolation of Dathomir until 8 ABY, when Gethzerion and her Nightsisters successfully captured New Republic General Han Solo on the planet. Gethzerion negotiated a trade with Zsinj, offering Solo in exchange for interstellar transport. However, she broke the agreement and attempted to escape Dathomir without Zsinj's consent. In response, Zsinj ordered his forces to destroy Gethzerion's transport, killing her and all the Nightsisters on board. This act of betrayal led to the fragmentation of the Nightsisters. Nevertheless, they managed to reorganize by approximately 23 ABY, when Tamith Kai and her new Nightsisters allied with the Second Imperium faction of the Imperial Remnant. The clan endured through the Second Galactic Civil War and, in 43.5 ABY, briefly allied with a Lost Tribe of the Sith Order against the New Jedi Order.

History

The origins of the female Force-users inhabiting the planet of Dathomir can be traced back to Mother Allya, a renegade Jedi Knight who was condemned to exile on that penitentiary colony around 600 BBY. After employing her abilities to dominate the other exiles, Allya instructed the initial Dathomirian women in the ways of the Force, successfully establishing her own all-female sect of Force users. To govern the social dynamics of her newly formed community, Allya authored the Book of Law, drawing inspiration from the Jedi Code.

In the centuries that followed, the Witches of Dathomir—also referred to as "Daughters of Allya"—branched out into various clans or sisterhoods. However, certain Sisters succumbed to the allure of the dark side of the Force, mirroring Allya's own earlier experiences before her redemption. Consequently, the Witches of Dathomir instituted a custom of exiling darksiders and those who violated their ancient code, compelling them to live in seclusion and contemplation outside their clans.

Nevertheless, at some juncture during the declining years of the Galactic Republic, while Allaya Djo held the position of warmaster within the Singing Mountain Clan, two Sisters named Gethzerion and Baritha faced exile after attempting to assassinate their leader, Augwynne Djo (who was also Gethzerion's biological mother). Joining forces with other outcasts, they established a new clan known as the Nightsisters—due to their exploration of the forbidden "night spells." Over time, this group evolved to resemble the traditional clans and began expanding, raising their own children to embrace the power of the dark side, although they did not perceive it in those terms. While the other clans refrained from actively opposing them, their numbers steadily increased.

The self-proclaimed Mother Gethzerion even furnished her followers with the Book of Shadows, a didactic treatise on the Nightsisters' novel and sinister spells and rituals. As the years passed, this original group of exiles fragmented into multiple covens, which soon engaged in competition for resources, territorial dominance, male slaves, and magical supremacy.

Rise of the Dathomirians

Decades before the Republic's downfall, a group of pirates arrived on Dathomir with a consignment of male Zabrak, a species of horned Near-Humans. The exclusively Human Nightsisters took an interest in these newcomers and discovered their genetic compatibility. The interbreeding of Humans and Zabraks resulted in the emergence of a hybrid race known as the Dathomirians. Gethzerion herself, for instance, was a Dathomirian, born to a fully Human mother, Augwynne Djo, and her Zabrak "maleling," or breeding partner. The female offspring were integrated into the covens, while the male offspring, known as the Nightbrothers, were relegated to the roles of slaves and breeders. From this point onward, the Nightsister clans' population comprised both full Humans and Dathomirian hybrids.

Queen Zalem's ambition

Zalem, Nightsister Queen of Dathomir.

The Nightsisters remained divided into competing covens until 31 BBY, when Clan mother Zalem proclaimed herself "Queen of Dathomir". An ambitious matriarch, Zalem had attained a higher level of Force mastery by capturing a Jedi Knight on Dathomir and coercing him into becoming her mate. After extracting all possible knowledge from the Jedi and siring a daughter named Ros Lai, Zalem eliminated her male slave. Now empowered in the Force, she rediscovered Dathomir's legendary and forgotten Star Temples, a collection of mysterious pyramids constructed by the long-vanished Kwa civilization. Zalem successfully unlocked the pyramids' secrets and unearthed the Infinity Gates, potent artifacts capable of projecting devastating energy waves that could engulf entire planets. Driven by ambition, Zalem devised a plan to annihilate Coruscant, the capital world of the Galactic Republic, using the ancient Kwa's technology. However, the self-appointed queen's aspirations for galactic dominance were foiled by the Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos, aided by Zalem's own daughter. Ros Lai stabbed her mother in the chest with a lightsaber, ending her reign over the united Sisters. While the other witches anticipated her ascension to the role of Queen, Ros Lai was taken into custody on Coruscant by Vos, thus terminating Zalem's lineage.

Following Zalem's downfall, a new authority figure emerged. Talzin, who served as both Clan Mother and shaman of her coven, successfully reunited the rival clans under her leadership. Under Talzin's guidance, the Nightsisters entered an era of prosperity. During this time, Mother Talzin decreed that the Sisters under her command could only mate with Zabrak Nightbrothers. Talzin also implemented a strict policy of separation, with the Brothers remaining detached from the Sisters.

Clone Wars

In 22 BBY, the Galactic Republic engaged in war against the Confederacy of Independent Systems. At some point during this galaxy-wide conflict, a group of Nightsisters established contact with Count Dooku, a Sith Lord and leader of the Confederacy. This sisterhood operated under the authority of Sai Sircu and Yansu Grjak. Dooku enlisted them into the Confederacy to assist with espionage, but their true objectives were independent. They participated in a scheme to smuggle and utilize lightsaber crystals for a Separatist superweapon, alerting the Jedi Council to this emerging threat. Ultimately, they betrayed Dooku and his mysterious master, partly to avert Dathomir's destruction.

Later in the war, the Nightsisters welcomed back their estranged sister Asajj Ventress and aided her in her quest for revenge against Count Dooku, who had betrayed her. Two other Nightsisters accompanied her to Serenno, intent on assassinating the Count. Following the failure of their attempt, Mother Talzin provided Dooku with an apprentice after the apparent "death" of Asajj Ventress. The Nightbrother Savage Opress was personally presented to the Count by Talzin. Around this time, they also discussed employing her Nightsisters against the Jedi in the Separatist war effort.

Subsequently, the Nightsisters came under attack from General Grievous, who was instructed to eliminate them. The ensuing battle resulted in a CIS victory that essentially amounted to genocide, with Ventress and Talzin being the only survivors. Despite enduring significant losses and a greatly reduced population, the Nightsisters' presence on Dathomir was never completely eradicated, and the elimination of most Dathomirians led to the restoration of the original human Nightsisters to their former prominence. Indeed, by the time of the Galactic Civil War, the Nightsisters had reorganized into a single coven under the firm leadership of Gethzerion.

Fall of the Nightsisters

Around the time of the Battle of Yavin, the Galactic Empire established a prison colony on Dathomir. Gethzerion and her Nightsisters assisted them by tracking down escapees and renegades seeking passage off-world. Using the dark side of the Force, the Nightsisters began to corrupt Imperial troops and gradually usurped control of the prison staff from Imperial officers. When the Empire discovered the situation, the Nightsisters turned Imperial troops against their officers. Consequently, a battle erupted on Dathomir between loyal Imperial forces and the Nightsisters, supported by their Imperial slaves. Eventually, the Nightsisters were defeated and driven from the prison. However, when Emperor Palpatine learned the true extent of Gethzerion's dark power, he began to fear the formidable threat she posed to him. He ordered the destruction of all ships stationed on Dathomir and deployed a fleet to enforce a quarantine on the planet, preventing Gethzerion and her clans from escaping. The prison and all Imperial forces on the surface were abandoned. These troops continued to fight the Nightsisters for years, but Gethzerion and her minions eventually seized control of the Imperial prison and enslaved all the stranded Imperials stationed there, attempting unsuccessfully to assemble an escape craft.

Despite this, several Nightsisters, such as Silri, apparently managed to evade this fate. They allied themselves with Tyber Zann of the Zann Consortium. The Nightsisters fought alongside the Zann Consortium, riding formidable rancors. Other escapees included Charal, who ended up on Endor.

In 1 ABY, the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure made a wager with one of his cousins to collect the most interesting trophy in the shortest time. One of Jabba's minions, the Trandoshan bounty hunter Bossk, consequently recruited a spacer to retrieve a Nightsister shroud on Dathomir for Jabba.

In 8 ABY, when several of the Rebellion's heroes were stranded on Dathomir, Gethzerion struck a deal with Warlord Zsinj: in exchange for handing over Han Solo, the Nightsisters would gain access to a ship to escape the planet. However, Zsinj betrayed them and ordered two Imperial Star Destroyers to fire on their escape shuttle, killing everyone on board.

Rebirth

Around 23 ABY, Tamith Kai established a new clan of Nightsisters in the Great Canyon. This clan accepted males and treated them as equals, unlike traditional Dathomiri society, where they were enslaved. The most promising members of the clan were sent to the Shadow Academy for further training, while the rest remained in the Great Canyon. In contrast to the traditional Nightsisters, this new clan was heavily influenced by Imperial Dark Jedi teachings and embraced the dark side of the Force as a concept. The fate of those left behind after the Shadow Academy's downfall remains unknown, although at least one of them, Lomi Plo, later departed the planet after the Second Imperium's collapse.

In 43.5 ABY, a clan of Nightsisters attacked the unification ceremony of the Broken Columns Clan and the Raining Leaves Clan. They were repelled by the combined strength of the clans, aided by Luke and Ben, and Vestara Khai. Some of the surviving Nightsisters were captured by the Lost Tribe of Sith and forced to teach them their Control web technique.

Religion and philosophy

The Nightsisters, like all Daughters of Allya, attributed the workings of the Force to the Spirits, a group of supernatural entities believed to inhabit a parallel plane to the mundane world. They held special reverence for the "Twin Deities," the Fanged God and the Winged Goddess, who were thought to maintain balance in the universe.

These nefarious witches employed the Force through a set of techniques they termed Allyan Magic, developing their own "night spells" by tapping into the dark side. Nightsisters excelled at casting illusions using "illusion spells," and it appears that, similar to the Fallanassi, this was an essential aspect of their Force usage.

Due to their constant manipulation of dark energies, the early Nightsisters often exhibited ruptured blood vessels in their bodies, particularly around their eyes. Certain Jedi Masters, such as Yoda, also believed that their ability to manipulate weather patterns contributed to their peculiar appearance.

There was no "uniform" or standard attire for the Nightsisters; each wore clothing that suited her personally, though most favored black robes and cloaks, adorned with tribal jewelry and accessories. Many also had unusually pale skin, possibly enhanced by applied tinctures. Nightsisters were known to be able to empower swords and other simple weapons with the Force, rendering them unbreakable even against the lightsabers wielded by the Jedi and Sith. While they typically used more primitive weapons like swords and spears, some Nightsisters did employ lightsabers and other variants. Sister Silri used a lightwhip during the Galactic Civil War, and even Gethzerion herself was known to wield a red-bladed lightsaber.

Either due to their affinity for the Force and/or their magical practices, the Nightsisters possessed remarkable longevity, with some witches known to have lived for more than one to several centuries. These included Zalem, Gethzerion, Baritha, Talzin, Daka, and Charal.

Society

All the witch clans of Dathomir were matriarchal societies. Each coven was a "sisterhood" led by a Clan Mother, and the "malelings" were generally disregarded. However, the Nightsisters of some clans had male warriors, believing them to be capable of balancing the masculine and feminine energies of the spirit realm. Despite being considered skilled fighters, these Brothers were still subservient to the Nightsisters and were kept in isolation.

Most Nightsisters were full-blooded Humans, but some of their covens consisted entirely of Dathomirians, the result of hybridization between Human witches and male Zabrak from Rattatak. However, the Dathomirian racial group was nearly driven to extinction during the Clone Wars, when General Grievous attacked Dathomir. When heroes of the New Republic visited the planet in 8 ABY, all the Force witches they encountered were Human.

Behind the scenes

The Nightsisters were created by Star Wars author Dave Wolverton in The Courtship of Princess Leia, a 1994 novel published by Bantam Spectra. However, the sorceress Charal from the TV-movie Ewoks: The Battle for Endor was retconned into a Nightsister in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, establishing the Force witches' first canonical appearance in 1985.

Wolverton noted in an interview that he sought to create a set of powerful female figures in the Star Wars universe, which had been dominated by men at the time, expressing delight that George Lucas had adopted the concept for his Darth Maul backstory.

Comparison with Wicca

The Nightsister banners called The Maiden, The Mother and The Crone echo the neopagan belief in the Triple Goddess.

There are several parallels that can be drawn when contrasting the Nightsisters with Wicca, a neopagan faith tradition centered around both witchcraft and polytheistic beliefs. Daniel Wallace, the writer behind Book of Sith: Secrets from the Dark Side, directly likened the Nightsisters' faith system to that of Wiccan practitioners in a conversation with TheForce.net, a fan-operated website. Furthermore, in his official notes at the conclusion of Book of Sith, Wallace confessed that his inspiration for the Nightsisters' veneration of the Twin Deities stemmed from his research into Wicca and various other pagan movements. It is worth noting that the Winged Goddess, one of the twin deities, was admittedly inspired by the maid-mother-crone concept of the Triple Goddess—a singular goddess expressed through three separate forms.

The idea of the Triple Goddess was also hinted at as an element of the Force witches' culture within the now-defunct massively multiplayer online roleplaying game Star Wars Galaxies. Within the game, players had the option to journey to Dathomir and acquire locally-made hanging banners offered in three distinct styles, known as The Maiden, The Mother, and The Crone.

Moreover, the Nightsisters use the term "coven" to describe their gatherings, a word that has been historically linked to the practice of magic and is currently used by Wiccans. In a similar vein, the Nightsisters' laws and incantations are documented in the Book of Shadows, a title that is the same as the real-world writings that hold Wiccan religious guidance.
