Force Heretic I: Remnant from The New Jedi Order series is a Star Wars Legends book authored by Sean Williams together with Shane Dix. This book marks the fifteenth installment in the Star Wars: The New Jedi Order saga. Del Rey initially released it as a paperback on February 4, 2003. The story continues in The New Jedi Order: Force Heretic II: Refugee, which came out later the same year.
With the galaxy wounded and exhausted, facing yet another conflict, the Jedi embark on a critical mission: to guide the remnants of the Empire toward the light.
The Galactic Alliance, born from the ashes of the New Republic—shattered by the brutal Yuuzhan Vong—is committed to establishing galaxy-wide peace. To achieve this, the Yuuzhan Vong must be stopped permanently. Luke Skywalker seeks Zonama Sekot, a world of legend, believed to have once fought off a Yuuzhan Vong invasion. Unlocking Zonama Sekot's mysteries could be the key to winning this relentless war.
Luke, his wife Mara, Jacen Solo, and other Jedi, aboard the Jade Shadow, venture into the Unknown Regions, following rumors of Zonama Sekot's location. Their mission is interrupted by a fierce battle. The Imperial Remnant, retreating from the Yuuzhan Vong, faces annihilation. The Jade Shadow crew must decide whether to abandon the Empire to its fate. But these are Jedi, not ordinary travelers….
The story begins with Saba Sebatyne's arrival at Barab I, where she discovers the Yuuzhan Vong have completely destroyed the planet, leaving no survivors. In orbit, Saba battles and defeats a group of coralskippers, destroying a large, organ-like Vong ship. To her horror, she realizes the ship contained her people, represented by six-pointed stars, meaning she inadvertently aided the Vong in harming her own species.
Three months later, Luke Skywalker, Mara Jade Skywalker, Jacen Solo, Tekli, and Danni Quee leave Mon Calamari to find Zonama Sekot, a living planet. Jacen believes this world can help the Galactic Alliance defeat the Yuuzhan Vong, based on information from his late tutor Vergere. Luke invites Saba to help her cope with her guilt. Their first destination is Bastion, the Imperial Remnant's capital. Simultaneously, Han Solo, Leia Organa Solo, Jaina Solo, Jagged Fel, and Twin Suns Squadron, with a Galactic Alliance fleet, aim to reconnect with the Core, starting with Galantos, home of the Fia. Leia includes Tahiri Veila after she experiences unexplained blackouts on Mon Calamari, during which she claimed the late Anakin Solo was trying to harm her.
On Yuuzhan'tar, Nom Anor, a former Executor, hides in the planet's underworld after his failure during the Battle of Ebaq 9, seeking to avoid execution by warriors sent by Supreme Overlord Shimrra. He encounters Vuurok I'pan, a Shamed One, who informs him of a growing group of Shamed Ones and workers planning a new Vong religion that reveres the Jedi. Nom Anor integrates himself into the group, plotting to regain his status without being killed by Shimrra's forces.
Luke, Mara, Jacen, Danni, and Saba arrive at Bastion to find it under Yuuzhan Vong attack. Imperial forces retreat to Yaga Minor, and Grand Admiral Gilad Pellaeon is presumed dead. However, Pellaeon's flagship Star Destroyer, the Chimaera, reaches Yaga Minor heavily damaged. Tekli saves Pellaeon from a coma using a bacta tank, though he needs prolonged treatment. Despite his condition, Pellaeon contributes to the plan to defend against the next Vong attack at Borosk via an earpiece.
On Galantos, while Han, Leia, and Tahiri stay in Al'solib'minet'ri City, and Jaina and Jag patrol in orbit with Twin Suns Squadron and the Pride of Selonia, Tahiri discovers a totem of the Vong god, Yun-Yammka, the Slayer. She confronts Fian guards with her lightsaber before fainting again. Meanwhile, Jaina investigates why the Yevetha of N'zoth haven't attacked the Fia. She finds the planet and its inhabitants destroyed by the Vong. A surviving Yevethan pilot, claiming the Vong are superior, self-destructs his ship, forcing Jaina to return to Galantos as the Vong attack.
At Borosk, the battle begins under Pellaeon's command. Jacen identifies Vong and Peace Brigade infiltrators, leading to their capture or elimination. Saba spots a slaveship like the one at Barab I and uses a Katana fleet Dreadnaught, the Braxant Bonecrusher, as bait, allowing her and Danni to infiltrate the ship. Danni deploys YVH mouse droids to poison the Vong guards. Saba then frees herself, Danni, and the captives, using blorash jelly for protection from the vacuum. The frigate Widowmaker, commanded by Jacen, rescues them.
The Galactic Alliance repels the Vong attack on Galantos, and the Ryn are revealed to be spies observing Vong operations. A Ryn agent directs Han, Leia, and Tahiri to send the Alliance forces to Bakura, which has lost communication.
The Empire wins at Borosk, repelling the Vong. Pellaeon declares the Imperial Remnant's alliance with the Galactic Alliance. Despite initial outrage from the Moff Council, Pellaeon convinces them of its necessity. Moff Kurlen Flennic opposes the alliance, even drawing a blaster on Pellaeon. Pellaeon offers Flennic a choice between imprisonment for treason or agreeing to the alliance. Flennic chooses the latter and is pardoned, though Pellaeon warns he will not forget the incident. Luke, Mara, Jacen, Danni, and Saba leave Imperial space with assistance from the Widowmaker, commanded by Captain Arien Yage, and xenobiologist Soron Hegerty, heading towards Chiss space to continue their search for Zonama Sekot.
On Yuuzhan'tar, Nom Anor, disguised, escapes death when his camp is attacked. He and Kunra, a Shamed warrior, meet Shoon-mi Esh, a Shamed Intendant and brother of Niiriit Esh. Nom Anor, Kunra, and Shoon-mi decide to revive the Jedi heresy, with Anor adopting the identity of Yu'shaa, the Shamed-worker prophet.
Force Heretic I: Remnant incorrectly places N'zoth in the second orbital position of the N'zoth system, contradicting Coruscant and the Core Worlds (2003) and The Essential Atlas (2009), which place it in the fifth.
