Kyber memory crystal

The Kyber memory crystal, often shortened to just the Kyber crystal, served as a memory crystal that meticulously cataloged all known Force-sensitive children throughout the galaxy. Its significance stemmed from its perceived role in safeguarding the future of the Jedi Order, making it a highly sought-after artifact for both the Jedi and the Sith. Access to the crystal's contents was exclusively granted when it was interfaced with a holocron, which itself required the unlocking power of the Force.

Characteristics

The Kyber crystal within a holocron

The Kyber memory crystal, identifiable as a compact, blue crystal with a diamond-like shape, stored the identities of every Force-sensitive child known to exist within the galaxy.

The crystal's design incorporated a security measure, ensuring that its stored data could only be read when inserted into a holocron specific to the Jedi. Furthermore, access to the holocron itself was restricted, requiring a Jedi's skillful application of the Force to unlock it.

These two components were carefully separated for security purposes. The holocrons were securely housed within the Holocron Vault located inside the heavily guarded Jedi Temple on Coruscant, while the crystal was entrusted to the care of Bolla Ropal, a Rodian Jedi Master.

History

During the period of conflict known as the Clone Wars, the Rodian Jedi Master Bolla Ropal was responsible for the crystal's safekeeping and protection.

Darth Sidious contracted Cad Bane, a Duros bounty hunter, to infiltrate the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and procure a holocron that would enable access to the information contained on the crystal. While Ropal was stationed on Devaron, the Duros bounty hunter Cad Bane successfully captured him and absconded with the memory crystal.

Subsequently, during an operation aimed at recovering the stolen holocron, [Anakin Skywalker](/article/anakin_skywalker], a Jedi Knight, was compelled to unlock the holocron in order to save the life of his Padawan, Ahsoka Tano. Bane then inserted the Kyber crystal into the holocron, granting his client access to the data within. The crystal was presumed to have been destroyed, along with Bane, when the Munificent-class frigate they occupied was destroyed in an explosion. However, Bane survived by disguising himself as Denal, a clone trooper.

Under Sidious's direction, Bane proceeded to abduct several children whose names were listed in the memory crystal. However, his capture ensued; after Masters Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Skywalker used the Force to coerce Bane, he led the Jedi to the holocron containing the crystal (which was located on a booby-trapped space station) and managed to escape amidst the chaos. The kidnapped children were located on Mustafar based on the flight logs of the Xanadu Blood, Bane's Rogue-class Porax-38 starfighter, and rescued from surgical droids by Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano. It was reported that Bane did not manage to copy the list before the Order recovered it.

Following this, Jedi seekers entrusted the memory crystal to Jocasta Nu, a Jedi Master and the Chief Librarian. In 19 BBY, during the hunt for her that occurred shortly after the commencement of the Great Jedi Purge, Darth Vader apprehended Nu and seized the memory crystal from her possession. Vader then secretly destroyed the memory crystal, intending to prevent the Emperor from bolstering the Sith ranks, an idea that Nu had presented to him, questioning if this outcome was what he truly desired.

Another Jedi holocron, containing a list detailing the locations of Force-sensitive children across the galaxy, was concealed within the Bogano Vault sometime before 14 BBY by Eno Cordova, a Jedi Master, as a measure to ensure the continued survival of the Jedi Order.

Behind the scenes

It's plausible that this term represented a broader classification encompassing various types of memory crystals. While the name implies a link to kyber crystals, no definitive connection has been established.

Multiple items have been referenced using variations of the name "Kyber" or "Kyber crystal," including the Kaiburr crystal featured in the 1978 novel Splinter of the Mind's Eye, as well as the kyber crystals utilized in the Death Star superlasers and Jedi lightsabers within canon.

The Kyber crystal was initially mentioned in early drafts of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope under the same name. It was conceived as a Force artifact coveted by both the Jedi and Sith. The poison dart employed by Jango Fett to assassinate Zam Wesell was originally intended to be identified as a Kamino kyber dart. However, this was later changed in the final version of the film to a saber-dart.

During the episode "Cargo of Doom," Cad Bane inaccurately claims that the holocron contains the information he was hired to retrieve. This statement contradicts later established lore, which clarifies that the Kyber crystal is the actual repository of the information, while the holocron merely serves as the means to access it. It remains unclear whether this discrepancy was an oversight on the part of the scriptwriters or an intentional narrative element.
