Vicrul

A human male, strong in the Force, known as Vicrul, was a member of the group of warriors called the Knights of Ren. These Knights served under the command of Ren. Under Ren's leadership, the Knights engaged in acts of violence, destruction, and looting across the galaxy. Eventually, they found themselves serving a new leader, the fallen Jedi Ben Solo, who took the name Kylo Ren and became an apprentice to Supreme Leader Snoke. This shift brought the Knights into the fold of the First Order. After Kylo Ren killed Snoke and became the Supreme Leader, he and the Knights pursued the Jedi Rey, leading Vicrul and the others to both Pasaana and later Kijimi. Ultimately, Vicrul and all of his fellow Knights were defeated and killed by a redeemed Ben Solo during the final Battle of Exegol.

Biography

New Republic Era

Conflict with Sector Security

Prior to the rise of the First Order and their war against the Resistance, Vicrul became one of the Knights of Ren. This organization consisted of Force-sensitive warriors who embraced the dark side and followed an ideology centered around the Ren, the lightsaber of their leader, Ren. The Knights of Ren traveled the expanse of the galaxy, seeking out other Force users to join their group. At one point, the Knights came into possession of the starship called the Night Buzzard.

After their leader told them about the Force-sensitive criminal Karrst, who, along with his brother Filin, was responsible for over a hundred deaths, Vicrul and the Knights of Ren set out to find him. They eventually discovered the brothers under attack by Sector Security forces. Vicrul and the Knights intervened, eliminating the attackers while Ren spoke with Karrst.

When Karrst hesitated after Ren told him that joining the Knights required him to kill his brother, Filin instead killed Karrst and asked to join in his place. However, because Filin was not Force-sensitive, Ren killed him. Vicrul then inquired about their next course of action, and Ren, the Knights' leader, responded with "find something to burn".

Clash with Luke Skywalker

Vicrul attacks Luke Skywalker.

On one occasion, Vicrul, along with his fellow knights—Ap'lek, Cardo, Kuruk, Trudgen, Ushar, and Ren—journeyed to Elphrona with the aim of stealing artifacts from the Jedi outpost located there. Coincidentally, Luke Skywalker, a young Ben Solo, and Lor San Tekka were also present. Upon discovering the Knights, Ren declared to Skywalker that everything within the outpost belonged to him and his allies, as Vicrul and the other Knights confronted the group of three. Skywalker countered that it all belonged to him, as he was the last Jedi and it was a Jedi outpost. Ren, stating that they would take what they came for, ignited his lightsaber. Skywalker instructed San Tekka to stay out of the fight and told Solo to protect him. San Tekka protested, arguing that Skywalker could not fight seven Knights alone. Skywalker, igniting his lightsaber, confidently replied that he would be fine.

Ren commanded the Knights to attack Skywalker. Evading their attacks, Skywalker used the Force to push the Knights back, throwing them against the walls of the outpost, including Vicrul. San Tekka, watching from the sidelines, was amazed by Skywalker's abilities. Skywalker asked the Knights if they had had enough, but Ren replied that they still outnumbered him. Skywalker then levitated their weapons and crushed them, leaving only Ren with a weapon. Ren activated a switch on his lightsaber, warning Skywalker that if the weapon left his hand, it would explode, killing them all. He also mentioned that he could sense the dark side within Solo. Skywalker told Ren to leave. Ren agreed, but first removed his mask. He questioned Solo about his commitment to being a Jedi, and invited him to contact the Knights if he ever wanted to explore his dark side further.

Enlisting Ben Solo

Vicrul and the other knights welcomed Ben Solo into the Knights of Ren.

Some time after their encounter with Sector Security, Vicrul, Ren, and the other Knights were resting at a cantina on the planet Varnak. While they were at the bar, Vicrul approached Ren to inform him of someone at the door of the cantina, suggesting he investigate. To Ren's surprise, Ben Solo, battered but alive, was standing in the doorway. Vicrul observed as Ren and Solo spoke, Ren commenting on how Solo had taken his time in joining them, arriving just before they were about to leave. Solo explained that he had been delayed, and Ren remarked that he looked like he had been through a lot, a comment that annoyed Solo. Ren then said it was just a joke. Ren removed his mask, explaining that it made conversations more intense than necessary, but noted that Snoke believed the Knights and Solo could become friends.

Solo stated that he wanted to travel with the Knights, arguing that he would be useful and that he was strong in the Force. Ren then told him that the price of joining was to cause a good death. When Solo mentioned that he had already taken a life, Vicrul and the Knights gathered around Ren, who said that he and the Knights were eager to hear the story, and to know who he had killed. Solo told them about Voe, Tai, and Hennix, three Jedi he had trained with under Luke Skywalker, all of whom had survived the destruction of Luke's temple and were pursuing Solo for answers. After Solo recounted the events leading to Hennix's death, Ren asked Vicrul and the other Knights for their opinions. Agreeing with them, Ren told Solo that while it was indeed a death, it was not a good death, at least not good enough for the Knights of Ren. Solo attempted to argue, but Ren pointed out that he hadn't truly wanted Hennix dead. Ren then stood up, with Vicrul and the others moving to his side. Ren agreed to bring Solo with them to see if they liked him and he liked them, and perhaps he would find his good death.

Skirmish on the Minemoon

After the death of Ren, Vicrul and the knights accepted their new leader.

Vicrul accompanied the Knights, Ren, and Solo, who had been given a new outfit by Ren, to the Minemoon of Mimban in the Mid Rim, where he and the other Knights captured several miners. After Solo used the Force to delve into the mind of one of the miners to locate the artifact the Knights were after, Ren ordered Vicrul and the others to kill all the captive miners, which they did without hesitation or remorse. Vicrul brutally stabbed one with his scythe. The Knights then ventured deeper into the moon's underground, searching for the Mindsplinter. Ren then ordered Vicrul and the others to jump down and kill all the miners, so they could then steal the Mindsplinter without resistance. However, the seemingly easy mission was interrupted by the arrival of Voe and Tai.

While Vicrul and the other Knights killed the miners, Voe attacked them. Vicrul lunged at her, swinging his scythe in an attempt to cut her down at Ren's furious command, but before he could strike, Vicrul was kicked in the face by Voe, and sent sprawling. As these events played out, Ben had started to fight Ren, who had killed Tai and was now intent on killing Solo too. However, the battle did not go in Ren's favor, as Vicrul and the other Knights watched as Solo stabbed and killed Ren, earning his good death in the process.

With Ren dead, and Solo having proved himself, having killed both Ren and Voe, he had earned Vicrul and the other Knights' respect. Vicrul and the others knelt before him, a silent declaration of loyalty to their new master. Vicrul, the Knights and their new master then delegated the cavern as it exploded, and left the Minemoon. Aboard the Night Buzzard, Vicrul and the other Knights watched as Solo tinkered with the multitude of lightsabers he had claimed from his victims, before eventually bleeding his once blue kyber crystal red, and forging a crossguard lightsaber. Solo earned the title of master of the Knights of Ren, and later took the name Kylo Ren, abandoning his old life entirely. He led the Knights on missions of pillage and destruction as their leader.

First Order/Resistance War

Service to the First Order

Vicrul and the knights return to Elphrona.

The Knights' loyalty to Kylo Ren also meant they served the First Order, which was initially led by Supreme Leader Snoke until Ren killed him and claimed the title of Supreme Leader for himself. When Ren began revisiting locations from his past, the Knights of Ren accompanied him. This included returning to the Jedi outpost on Elphrona, where Vicrul had first encountered Ben Solo. Ren mentioned that they were searching for a ghost within the outpost, to which Vicrul responded that he did not sense any ghosts. This prompted Ren to remind Vicrul of their previous defeat on Elphrona before departing.

Summoned by Ren

In 35 ABY, Vicrul and the other knights were present when Ren and Albrekh were working on repairing Ren's helmet, which he had previously damaged. Once the helmet was repaired, Vicrul and the Knights accompanied Ren to the Steadfast aboard their ship, the Night Buzzard. As they walked through the hallways with Ren, they attracted the attention of two stormtroopers, who were impressed by their arrival. Upon arriving at the briefing, Kylo presented the head of the Ovissian Boolio, which he and the Knights had retrieved after discovering a spy within the First Order.

Confrontation on Pasaana

Vicrul and the Knights accompanied Ren to the desert planet Pasaana after learning that Rey and her companions were there. While Rey confronted Ren, Ap'lek and Kuruk tracked down Chewbacca, eventually capturing him and handing him over to stormtroopers. Vicrul and the others stood by as Chewbacca was loaded onto a transport, along with his belongings and the dagger he was carrying. The Knights then took the captive back to the Steadfast.

When the Steadfast arrived at Kijimi, Vicrul and the other Knights went to the surface to search for any sign of Rey and her allies, but their search of the city was unsuccessful.

Showdown on Exegol

Shortly after the hunt for Rey, Vicrul and the other Knights of Ren were in the Sith Citadel of Darth Sidious on Exegol. During the battle of Exegol, Kylo Ren, now the redeemed Ben Solo, entered the Citadel to rescue Rey.

The now redeemed Ben Solo faces his former allies.

Before Solo could reach the Throne of the Sith, Vicrul and the Knights confronted their former leader. Like the other Knights, Vicrul's allegiance was to Sidious, not Solo. The Knights quickly overwhelmed Solo, who was unarmed, knocking him to the ground and beating him. However, Rey used their Force-bond to give Solo his grandfather's lightsaber. Wielding Anakin's lightsaber, Solo swiftly killed Cardo and Kuruk and then fought the remaining four Knights. When Vicrul's scythe was restrained by the lightsaber, Solo used the opportunity to Force push Ap'lek into a chasm before cutting Vicrul down.

Legacy

With the remaining Knights also defeated, Solo and Rey were left to confront the Emperor. Sidious was ultimately destroyed, but at the cost of Solo's life, which also marked the end of the Knights of Ren.

Powers and Skills

Vicrul's favored weapon was his vibro-scythe.

Vicrul was Force-sensitive and skilled in the dark side of the Force as a dark_side_adept. Although he lacked formal training in the Force, Vicrul could still manifest some Force powers, though these powers were uncontrolled and spontaneous. Vicrul passively projected fear onto his opponents and had enhanced reflexes. Vicrul, like the other Knights of Ren, possessed fighting skills and martial prowess that few could match. Vicrul considered himself a harvester, using his ultrasonic scythe to cut down enemies and take their souls to increase his power. Despite Vicrul's apparent abilities, Ben Solo easily defeated him during the Battle of Exegol.

Equipment

Vicrul's preferred weapon was a phrik scythe that had been annealed. The scythe was equipped with an ultrasonic vibro-tech setting, allowing the blade to easily cut through flesh. Although he preferred close-range combat, Vicrul carried a blaster pistol in a holster on his hip for emergencies. Vicrul, like the other Knights, typically wore black clothing. He often wore a coat made from the skin of a large reptilian creature he had killed. Vicrul's helmet was crafted from pastillion ore and had synth-leather ear flaps that concealed the helmet's opening seam.

Behind the Scenes

Concept art of Vicrul

Vicrul made his initial appearance in a Force vision in the 2015 film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens, which was the first film in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. In the 2019 film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker, Vicrul was played by martial artist Anton Simpson-Tidy. However, in the movie's credits, the character was only referred to as "Knight of Ren". The character's name was simultaneously revealed in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Galactic Guide, and his card in Star Wars: Card Trader, all of which were released alongside the film. Artist Glyn Dillon created Vicrul's design for The Force Awakens. Similar to the other Knights, Vicrul's design was inspired by unused concept art for the "Jedi Killer," a character that eventually evolved into Kylo Ren. Dillon referred to Vicrul's design as "grenade head" in The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
