The YT-2400 light freighter, alternatively referred to as the YT-2400 transport, represented a class within the YT-series of light freighters. During the Imperial Era, both the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic made use of this particular freighter model. Furthermore, cargo haulers and pirates also utilized the YT-2400.

The light freighter designated YT-2400 was a standard cargo-carrying vessel manufactured by the Corellian Engineering Corporation (CEC), forming a part of their YT-series line of starships. While sharing the characteristic disc-shaped hull common to most YT-series ships, the YT-2400 distinguished itself with a tubular cockpit connected to the hull via two bracing arms on the starboard side. Positioned behind the cockpit was the ship's primary escape pod, which could accommodate six individuals. A secondary escape pod was located opposite the primary one, within the YT-2400's cargo bay. The YT-2400's structural integrity was ensured through reinforced bulkhead frames and double-layered armored plating. The freighter measured 18.65 meters in length and 28.5 meters in width. Although it shared numerous components with the CEC YT-1300 light freighter, the YT-2400 was more compact, possessed enhanced maneuverability, and could be easily operated by a single pilot.
A typical YT-2400 light freighter was originally outfitted with twin laser cannons affixed to Corellian 1D servo turrets. The freighter included two of these weapon systems, one situated dorsally and the other ventrally. Furthermore, the YT-2400 incorporated thirteen built-in weapon emplacement points to facilitate straightforward modifications. The default configuration utilized six of these emplacements, leaving seven available.
The YT-2400 light freighter was capable of achieving speeds of up to 800 kph within an atmospheric environment. The freighter was equipped with a Class 2 hyperdrive alongside a Class 12 backup hyperdrive, both supported by a Navicomputer. Standard YT-2400 models incorporated deflector shields. The freighter derived its power from a power core that generated nearly twice the energy output of other YT models. This surplus of energy enabled the use of larger engines and supported further modifications.
The YT-2400 light freighter required a crew of three individuals and provided accommodations for six passengers. Crew quarters and living spaces were situated within the ship's bracing arms. While not as spacious as other YT-series models, the YT-2400 compensated with its ease of modification and increased cargo capacity, capable of transporting 150 metric tons of cargo.
A brand new YT-2400 light freighter had a price tag of 130,000 credits, while a pre-owned one could be acquired for 32,000 credits.
The YT-2400 light freighter was a spacefaring vessel of compact design, employed for the purpose of cargo transport and the transportation of troops.
The Corellian Engineering Corporation developed and manufactured the YT-2400 light freighter. CEC promoted the YT-2400 as incorporating the most desirable attributes of the YT-1300 light freighter, but in a more streamlined and space-saving design. Upon its initial release, CEC observed that customers expressed a preference for the wide bar engine design popularized by the YT-1300, a feature absent in the YT-2400. While CEC did not offer cylindrical engines as a standard feature on the YT-2400, they did authorize the release of modification kits that allowed for the installation of cylindrical engines. Following the introduction of the YT-2400, CEC prematurely discontinued their YT-2000 transport model, despite its strong sales performance.

During the Batonn insurgency, which occurred in the Age of the Galactic Empire, Imperial Admiral Thrawn and ensign Eli Vanto utilized a YT-2400 freighter known as the Slipknot. They used this freighter to impersonate weapons smugglers to gain access to Nevil Cygni's Nomad starship. The freighter met its end when it was destroyed as a diversion to facilitate the pair's escape from the Nomad ship.
Lohgarra, a Wookiee, served as the captain of a YT-2400 light freighter named the Mighty Oak Apocalypse (frequently shortened to MOA). In 3 BBY, Lohgarra consented to transport Apprentice Legislators Amilyn Holdo and Leia Organa aboard the MOA to the planet Pamarthe. Lohgarra and the MOA subsequently joined the Rebel Alliance fleet during the Galactic Civil War.
A rebel cell identified as Iron Squadron employed the YT-2400 freighter Sato's Hammer as their operational hub. Previously owned by the celebrated Jun Sato, the aging vessel proved valuable to the young rebels, aiding them in damaging an Imperial cruiser. Mart Mattin, the leader of Iron Squadron, later departed from the Rebellion with Sato's Hammer before ultimately deciding to rejoin Iron Squadron.

During the Galactic Civil War, a YT-2400 light freighter known as the Outrider was in operation. In 0 BBY, the Outrider departed from Mos Eisley on Tatooine.
The Galactic Empire had possession of a YT-2400 light freighter at the Imperial Impound Yard situated on Novka. During a Rebel attack on the Impound yard, Tula Markona commandeered the freighter.
Saponza, a Rebel mercenary, and his associate utilized at least one YT-2400 light freighter for the transport of troops to and from Saponza's homestead.
A YT-2400 light freighter was present during the Battle of Hoth.
In 5 ABY, Ralsius Paldora, an Imperial defector, asserted that a YT-1300 light freighter experienced hyperdrive failures 1.22 times more frequently than a YT-2400.
While on the Entropian Hive, Yrica Quell, a New Republic pilot, observed a YT-2400 departing from the asteroid base. Quell noted that the battered starship resembled one that her mother had piloted.
In 35 ABY, YT-2400 light freighters were included in a fleet assembled by Lando Calrissian to provide assistance to the Resistance during the battle against the Sith Eternal forces above the planet Exegol.

The YT-2400 light freighter, with specific reference to the Outrider, was conceived for the Star Wars Legends multimedia project known as Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. Jon Knoles, who held roles as a game designer, lead artist, and animator for the 1996 video game Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, created initial concept art for the Outrider. Kilian Plunkett, an artist, also contributed an early design for the ship. Ultimately, Doug Chiang, the concept art director at Lucasfilm, provided the final design for the Outrider. Allan Kausch, an editor at Lucasfilm, furnished Chiang with a basic outline for the Outrider's appearance, specifying that it should be "comparable to the Millennium Falcon" but avoid excessive similarity. Chiang's initial design for the Outrider featured a pincer-like form, but it was finalized by 1994. The "one-angle view" sketches were then passed on to Jon Knoles, who proceeded to create schematics of the YT-2400 from various angles. These schematics underwent further refinement before the design was realized as a computer model.
According to Pablo Hidalgo, a member of the Lucasfilm Story Group, Doug Chiang confirmed that the YT-2400 light freighter design was originally intended for the 1997 re-release of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. This project was in development concurrently with Shadows of the Empire, and the ship's design was subsequently repurposed as the Outrider.
The YT-2400 light freighter made its inaugural canon appearance in the re-release of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, where the Outrider can be observed in the background as it departs from Mos Eisley while Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, C-3PO, and R2-D2 arrive.
Some inconsistency exists regarding the YT-2400's length. The 2018 reference book titled Star Wars Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles indicates that the YT-2400 measures 21 meters in length. However, the YT-1300 Millennium Falcon Owners' Workshop Manual, also released in 2018, asserts that the YT-2400's length is 18.65 meters. Given that the YT-1300 Corellian Freighter Owner's Workshop Manual is the more recent source, its measurement is given precedence in this article.
The YT-1300 Corellian Freighter Owner's Workshop Manual also states that the YT-2400 light freighter was introduced after the release of the YT-2000 transport, and that the YT-2000 transport was developed "during the period that the Rebel Alliance rose up against the Galactic Empire". However, a YT-2400 light freighter is depicted in a panel of the 2017 comic book Darth Maul (2017) 2, which is set around 32 BBY, 13 years prior to the establishment of the Galactic Empire. This article posits that the inclusion of the YT-2400 light freighter in Darth Maul Part II was an "Easter egg" inserted by the comic's illustrator, Luke Ross, and not a canonical appearance.
In the novels Thrawn, Lost Stars, and Leia, Princess of Alderaan, the freighters Slipknot and Mighty Oak Apocalypse are not explicitly identified as YT-2400 light freighters. Their depiction as such is limited to the comic book adaptation of Thrawn, Star Wars: Thrawn, and the Japanese webcomic adaption of Lost Stars.
The YT-2400 light freighter makes two appearances in the 2015 video game Disney Infinity 3.0. A YT-2400 can be seen flying over Tatooine in the Rise Against the Empire playset. After the "Blasting Pad" mission is completed in The Force Awakens playset, a YT-2400 will land near Takodana Castle during free roam or a mission.
