First Battle of Geonosis

The Battle of Geonosis, most frequently referred to as the First Battle of Geonosis, marked the initial major engagement between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, igniting the Clone Wars. This conflict represented the Grand Army of the Republic's inaugural large-scale combat operation, and the first significant battle for the Jedi in numerous years.

Background

The year 22 BBY found the Galactic Republic embroiled in a significant crisis. Numerous star systems and powerful organizations, including the Trade Federation, InterGalactic Banking Clan, Techno Union, Commerce Guild, and the Corporate Alliance, had chosen to secede and align themselves with the Confederacy of Independent Systems, led by the former-Jedi Count Dooku, while terrorist acts plagued the Republic's capital planet of Coruscant. The Republic Senate had scheduled a meeting to deliberate on the Military Creation Act. Tensions escalated in the three months leading up to the vote, with clashes occurring between opposing factions on various planets, even as the Refugee Relief Movement endeavored to provide aid.

On the day of the pivotal vote, Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo journeyed to Coruscant to cast her vote against the Act, only to become the target of an assassination attempt. Consequently, she was assigned Jedi protection in the form of Obi-Wan Kenobi and his young Padawan, Anakin Skywalker. Kenobi embarked on an investigation, tracing the origin of the toxic dart that ended the life of the assassin, while Skywalker accompanied the Senator back to Naboo.

Acting on a tip from his acquaintance Dexter Jettster, Kenobi journeyed to the planet Kamino, a world mysteriously expunged from the Jedi Archives. There, he discovered that ten years prior, Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas had commissioned the creation of a clone trooper army. During his investigation, he encountered the bounty hunter Jango Fett. Kenobi relayed this information to the Jedi Council and resolved to pursue Fett, suspecting his involvement in the assassination plot. A confrontation ensued on a landing platform, during which Kenobi managed to attach a homing beacon to Fett's ship.

En route to Geonosis, Dooku sent an encoded message to General Sev'rance Tann, predicting an imminent major battle and instructing her to prepare for his rapid departure.

Kenobi chased Fett to Geonosis. His ship narrowly evaded a homing torpedo, and he landed on the planet's surface. He infiltrated a facility and witnessed a gathering of Separatist leadership, where it was revealed that Viceroy Nute Gunray of the Trade Federation was the mastermind behind the attempt on Amidala's life. Kenobi transmitted this information to the Jedi Council but was subsequently captured by destroyer droids. His signal was redirected through Amidala's ship on Tatooine, where she and Skywalker had traveled in a failed attempt to free his mother. Meanwhile, Dooku engaged in a conversation with the captive Kenobi, attempting to sway him to his cause, even disclosing that the events on Naboo years earlier had been orchestrated by a Sith Lord known as Darth Sidious, and strongly implying that Sidious was one of the high ranking officials within the Republic's government. Kenobi refused, prompting Dooku to suggest that securing his release would be a challenging task.

Skywalker and Amidala journeyed to Geonosis to rescue Kenobi, but they too were captured in the Geonosis droid foundries. All three were condemned to death in the Petranaki arena. When Kenobi inquired as to their presence, Skywalker explained Amidala's plan to rescue him, to which Kenobi responded with sarcastic congratulations for the unsuccessful endeavor. They narrowly avoided their executions, which involved encounters with an acklay, a nexu, and a reek.

In response to Kenobi's report concerning the Separatists' conspiracy, the Galactic Senate, acting on the suggestion of Representative Jar Jar Binks, granted Supreme Chancellor Palpatine "emergency powers" to address the unfolding crisis.

Jedi Grand Master Yoda mobilized the secret clone trooper army, deploying them to Geonosis alongside a Jedi strike force. The rapid deployment from Kamino left "Cuy'val Dar" sergeants such as Kal Skirata stunned to discover the commando squads they had trained were suddenly gone.

The Clash

Breaching Defenses

The Jedi High Council dispatched a group of 200 Jedi, under the leadership of Jedi Masters Mace Windu, Coleman Trebor, Eeth Koth, Kit Fisto, Plo Koon, Shaak Ti, Even Piell, Luminara Unduli, and Ki-Adi-Mundi, to Geonosis with the mission of rescuing Obi-Wan Kenobi and investigating reports of Separatist army construction on the planet.

A squadron of Delta-7 Aethersprite-class light interceptor, led by Mace Windu and Luminara Unduli, approach Geonosis to rescue Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.

Upon entering the Geonosis system, the Jedi starfighters came under fire from Anti-orbital cannons, resulting in several casualties. Mace Windu and Luminara Unduli managed to evade the cannons' range and commandeered TX-130S fighter tanks, employing communications jamming to prevent CIS forces from summoning reinforcements. Their objective was to disable the orbital cannons. Droid defenses, consisting of GATs, Hailfire droids, and STAPs, attempted to impede their progress but were ultimately destroyed by the Jedi. The power nodes were subsequently destroyed, causing the cannons to detonate.

However, the final cannon was situated within a Geonosian base. Windu proceeded on foot to disable it, penetrating the droid defenses and destroying the remaining power nodes with his lightsaber. With the orbital defenses neutralized, the establishment of a landing zone became paramount. The Jedi strike team landed at a captured Confederate outpost and advanced toward the arena in a convoy of RTTs, with Windu and Unduli clearing the path in their tanks. Upon reaching the arena's perimeter, they destroyed tunnel catacombs deploying battle droids, before quietly deploying into the arena itself.

Simultaneously, the Acclamator-class assault ship Aken was navigating the asteroid belt en route to Geonosis. The Aken was escorted by Jedi starfighters led by Adi Gallia, who had arrived from Nod Kartha, and Siri Tachi. After being detected by droid starfighters, the Jedi were forced to defend the Aken against two C-9979 landing craft and two Trade Federation Missile Frigates that emerged from behind, accompanied by Geonosian starfighters from the planet's surface. The Separatist forces pushed the Republic group forward until the Aken reached the edge of the asteroid ring, where a blockade of Missile Frigates awaited them. Gallia led the starfighters in destroying a pair of the frigates in their line, enabling the Aken to escape and eventually reach the surface of Geonosis. Eventually, the remaining Acclamator-class Assault ships pierced the atmosphere, launching pre-emptive strikes against the Geonosian beak-wing facilities, effectively preventing the few remaining fighters from challenging the Republic's orbital blockade.

Republic Strategic Command, including the Zilkin Meebur Gascon, played a role in planning the battle and analyzing maps to guide Republic forces. Gaba-18 airspeeders conducted reconnaissance, and V-19 Torrent starfighter prototypes also participated in the battle.

Confrontation in the Arena

Mace Windu and the remains of his strike team.

Skywalker, Amidala, and Kenobi successfully evaded the creatures unleashed upon them until Master Windu's rescue team arrived. However, Count Dooku unveiled the Separatist's newly developed battle droid army, leading to a fierce battle. During the conflict, the Padawan Tu'ala, emulating her master, sacrificed herself to protect Anakin Skywalker from a Geonosian soldier.

Despite being outnumbered, the Jedi fought valiantly. As the Jedi materialized throughout the arena, many Geonosians fled in terror.

During the ensuing battle, bounty hunter Jango Fett attempted to engage and eliminate the legendary Korun Jedi Master, Mace Windu. However, the reek nearly trampled Fett and damaged his jet pack during their confrontation. After killing the reek, Fett was charged by Mace Windu; at the last second the Mandalorian attempted to activate his jetpack, but failed. The Jedi closed in on Fett, initially slashing his left hand and cutting it off before decapitating the infamous bounty hunter. His battered helmet was soon discovered by his "son" Boba Fett. Nevertheless, Dooku's forces maintained the advantage. C-3PO had inadvertently lost his head in a droid factory, resulting in his head being attached to a battle droid's body, while his own body proceeded onto the assembly line and received a battle droid's head in return. Both versions of C-3PO were defeated in the arena and subsequently reassembled by R2-D2. Eventually, Dooku signaled for a cessation of hostilities, offering the Jedi an opportunity to surrender. However, Windu refused, asserting that the Jedi would not become hostages. Dooku then regretfully instructed the surrounding droids to execute the Jedi.

Meanwhile, massive Republic assault ships breached the upper atmosphere, deploying a fleet of gunships, carrying thousands of clone troopers and dozens of AT-TEs as well as Jedi General Yoda, to the surface. By the time the fleet reached the arena, the Jedi had suffered significant losses, with only slightly more than 20 remaining alive. Yoda ordered the clones to establish a perimeter around the survivors as they evacuated. As they departed, the empty stadium was littered with droid parts as the opening battle of the Clone Wars commenced.

A Jedi joined the strike team, cutting down numerous battle droids. As the battle spread past the arena, the Jedi continued to fight.

Skirmish in the Desert

Master Ur-Sema Du was one of General Grievous's first Jedi victims.

Concurrently with the arena battle, a contingent of clone troopers led by Jedi Master Adi Gallia and Jedi Knight Siri Tachi launched an assault on a power plant that supplied energy to the droid foundries in the surrounding area. After escorting the Aken to the surface of Geonosis, Master Gallia and Siri Tachi directed several LAAT/i gunships under their command to deploy troopers near the power plant. The two Jedi defended the clones on the ground and in the air from Separatist forces, which included battle droids, Armored Assault Tanks, and droid starfighters. Along the way, Gallia had the gunships destroy a nearby Trade Federation Core Ship. Clone troopers eventually reached the power plant and planted explosives inside. After the plant was detonated by the clones, Adi Gallia and Siri Tachi ascended into space to prevent Separatist transports from escaping.

Following the rescue of the Jedi, the droid and clone armies engaged in a complex series of engagements across various fronts. The Republic army landed in twelve Acclamator-class assault ships, unloading infantry, armored vehicles, artillery, and air support. The Separatist army comprised droid infantry of varying strength and larger droid-controlled vehicles.

The drop zone for the clone army at the battle.

The Battle of Geonosis was primarily a ground campaign. However, the Republic's effective use of aerial bombardment against the Separatists' fighter craft granted the Republic's gunships air superiority for much of the battle, providing the clone forces with a crucial advantage. Although the clone troopers were significantly outnumbered by droids, the droids were highly vulnerable to aerial attacks from Republic gunships. The Republic gunships played a pivotal role in clearing away the Hailfire droids and enabling the AT-TEs to establish dominance on the battlefield, although the Hailfires managed to shoot down several LAATs, and a few were destroyed by fortunate shots from laser emplacements.

Clone trooper CT-1226's regiment was deployed near the arena. An advancing wave of droids approached their position. One of the Republic walkers launched a projectile that created a crater, into which CT-1226 fell. A Hailfire droid passed overhead. A B2-HA series super battle droid brushed aside B1 battle droids to target one of the walkers. CT-1226 managed to target the B2's heat exchangers, and a missile launched by the droid struck a Hailfire instead. CT-1226 disabled the B2 with an electromagnetic pulse grenade and destroyed the droid with his blaster. The clone was then assisted into the walker as it plowed through the hole in the droid's defensive formation that CT-1226 had created.

Separatist General Sev'rance Tann received orders to clear a path for Count Dooku. Accompanied by a force of B2 super battle droids, she advanced along a canyon where Confederacy forces engaged Republic forces. Tann assumed command of surviving units, including Mortar Super Battle Droids, Repeater super battle droids, heavy dwarf spider droids to battle Clone Scout Walkers and Clone Personal Walkers, and OG-9 spider droids to duel AT-TEs. At least one Blurrg trooper participated in these skirmishes. A trooper kept Tann informed of Count Dooku's progress. Near the end of the canyon, Tann engaged and defeated three Jedi Knights in combat. Upon Dooku's arrival at the canyon's end, he commended her for her efforts.

The Jedi Knights lead the newly formed Grand Army of the Republic into the Battle of Geonosis.

Republic reconnaissance troopers mounted their speeder bikes and sped across the battlefield, gathering crucial intelligence regarding enemy activity. Elsewhere, Geonosian-trained acklays and nexus devoured unfortunate clone troopers. A group of airborne infantry, including Battalion Commander CRC-09/571, spearheaded the frontal assault on the Separatist Core Ships. Jedi Master Mace Windu, engaged in ground combat, boarded a LAAT/i and used it to destroy several Hardcell-class interstellar transports before landing and defending in a TX-130 Saber-class fighter tank SPHA guns bringing down Core Ships. In this manner, another three Core Ships were destroyed, before Windu received word that contact with Master Yoda had been lost. Windu raced off to find the Grand Master but was intercepted by a trio of Dooku's Sith Acolytes piloting Enforcer hovertanks. Windu was able to defeat the trio.

Having forced the droid army into retreat, Yoda observed that much of the Confederate Navy remained grounded, receiving droid shipments when the Republic launched its attack. Lightly armored and vulnerable Techno Union starships attempted to withdraw immediately, but many were destroyed in the initial wave of attacks from the Republic gunships. The Jedi Master then ordered the army's artillery to target as many of the heavily armored Trade Federation Core Ships as possible, as each contained millions of deadly battle droids, managing to destroy at least one.

Despite securing control of the planet's surface, the Republic failed to capture the Separatist leadership and prevent the war from erupting, as most of the Confederacy's battle droids and heavy equipment escaped aboard Core Ships.

Amidst this chaos, Jedi Master Echuu Shen-Jon, alongside Plo Koon and other Jedi warriors, successfully eliminated numerous Core Ships and Techno Union spacecraft. They were reinforced with 10 GAR Energy Pummels delivered via AA-9 freighters, while a nearby Republic Starship and Gunship Bombers targeted opportune enemies. Separatist forces included Corporate Alliance Artillery Regulars. The Jedi team subsequently pursued Count Dooku, but their progress was impeded by Sev'rance Tann. She tragically killed Stam Reath, Echuu's padawan, enraging Shen-Jon before making her escape.

Simultaneously, the Republic's Hawkbat Battalion received orders to advance directly into the firing range of a spider droid column. The battalion suffered near-total destruction. However, Captain Deviss, commanding officer of K Company, bravely remained in a shallow depression to care for two severely wounded troopers, risking his own life. Surrounded by spider droids, he steadfastly defended their position for three hours until a medevac team arrived. His courageous actions proved fruitful, as both of the men under his command were successfully rescued.

In a separate area, ARC trooper Jangotat, leveraging his prior knowledge of power cell recharge cycles, detected an impending reflux pattern in a Hailfire droid. Though the capacitor whine was almost imperceptible, CT-96/298 swiftly emerged from cover and neutralized the Hailfire, preventing an explosion that would have killed five fellow troopers.

Within the depths of the Geonosian catacombs, the Separatist General Grievous, a Kaleesh/cyborg, experienced his first combat deployment during the battle. He used an electrostaff to eliminate Master Ur-Sema Du and a battalion of clone troopers, seizing the Jedi's lightsaber for his soon-to-be-gruesome "collection."

Later, above a chasm, Theta Squad, a Republic Commando unit, rappelled down and planted explosives on a Geonosian door, while Delta Squad defended against nearby OG-9 homing spider droids. After breaching the door, Theta and Delta entered the Geonosian caverns and separated. Theta squad leader Taler instructed Darman to remain behind and secure a location as the others advanced toward a droid foundry. Designated 1136, or Darman, lost contact with his squad and retreated. He was the only member of Theta to survive.

Delta Squad successfully eliminated Geonosian Separatist General Sun Fac as he attempted to escape the planet in his personal Geonosian fighter. They also observed General Grievous's ship, the Soulless One. The acquired codes enabled the Republic artillery and fleet to destroy the remaining CIS fleet. Furthermore, Delta Squad eliminated a significant number of droids, Geonosian warriors, and an anti-aircraft turret during their mission.

A LAAT/i gunship transported the four members of Delta Squad to a canyon relatively close to the Core Ship access point. They advanced into the canyon, battling through a series of ambushes. Upon reaching the Core Ship entrance, they found it impenetrable due to a shield. Their Clone advisor, 01/425, instructed them to blast through a rock wall to reach a nearby exit. Boss led his three commandos toward the second door, swiftly eliminating the defending droids.

Suddenly, an A-DSD advanced dwarf spider droid emerged from an alternate doorway and began firing its cannons at the stranded squad. After a tense battle lasting several minutes, the droid was destroyed, and a gunship eliminated the shield protecting the Core Ship's entryway, granting Delta Squad access.

B2 Battle Droids on standby in the Core Ship.

The squad divided, each tasked with sabotaging critical systems. Boss stormed through the B2 battle droid storage areas, rapidly dispatching any activated droids. Boss encountered Sev in a corridor just before three destroyer droids rolled by, but they easily destroyed them using EC detonators, proceeding to save Scorch and Fixer, who were under heavy fire. Reunited, Delta Squad encountered a battle droid dispenser, followed by several Geonosian elites and another Advanced dwarf spider droid. Entering a lift, the squad prepared for their final objective: acquiring the Core Ship launch codes located on the bridge. At that moment, a battle droid announced over the loudspeaker that all primary systems would overload in five minutes.

Delta Squad fought through numerous corridors, encountering dozens of droids, and finally reached the bridge with only ninety seconds remaining. They neutralized three auto-turrets and a squad of B1 battle droids, while Fixer began extracting the codes from a console as droidekas and B2s swarmed onto the bridge. After sixty seconds, Delta Squad, severely wounded and under constant laser fire, retreated through a corridor to a waiting LAAT/i Gunship just as the Core Ship began to explode. Delta squad was one of the few Republic Commando squads that did not lose any members during the Battle of Geonosis.

501st Mission

During the battle, a detachment of the 501st Legion engaged in combat. A clone trooper was tasked with securing Checkpoint Alpha. He encountered and destroyed three B2 super battle droid scouts before they could summon reinforcements. Using thermal detonators to obliterate a Hailfire droid, he then secured the wreckage of a nearby Hardcell-class interstellar transport.

The situation rapidly escalated into a full-scale battle involving Geonosians, droids, and clones. A clone engineer was deployed to repair Power droids and FX-series medical assistant droids, ensuring the availability of ammunition and medical support. Two Spider Droids entered the battlefield during the engagement. The clone engineer was then reassigned to the recently deployed AT-TE. The Republic forces soon destroyed the droids to prevent the Separatists from gaining an advantage.

A Geonosian soldier's death resulted in a Sith holocron being dropped on top of the wrecked Hardcell. A clone jet trooper was summoned and successfully delivered the holocron to Checkpoint Alpha. The troopers then utilized the AT-TE to launch an assault on a nearby hill fortress, quickly securing it. A clone sniper was deployed and eliminated Geonosians and droids alike. A clone heavy trooper employed his rocket launcher to destroy a Spider droid.

General Windu arrived shortly afterward and spearheaded an assault that secured the Northern CIS bunker against droids, including Assault battle droids, engineer battle droids, and IG-100 MagnaGuards.

Spire Mission

Master Yoda subsequently dispatched a group of clone troopers, an AT-TE, and a pair of LAAT/i gunships into battle. Their objective was to secure the Spire council chamber and eliminate any remaining droids in the vicinity. They began by destroying Techno Union Transport ships, preventing the droids from escaping. The clone troopers then wiped out the remaining droids, successfully capturing the spire. The droid defenses included battle droid assassins, B2 battle droids, and destroyer droids.

Space battle

Cavik Toth's flagship explodes behind Adi Gallia.

Following an initial raid on a Geonosian power plant, Adi Gallia and Siri Tachi ascended into orbit in their Delta-7 starfighters, intending to intercept fleeing droid transports. While navigating the asteroid ring, the Jedi received a hyperspace transmission from the pirate Nym, warning that Captain Cavik Toth of Sabaoth Squadron was approaching Geonosis with his Hex fleet. Under orders from Count Dooku, Toth intended to use the biological weapon Trihexalon to devastate the battlefield on Geonosis.

Galia and Tachi, along with Zeta Squadron, a squadron of Jedi pilots including A'Sharad Hett, Bant Eerin, and An'ya Kuro, led the fight against Toth's 8 Hex Deployers and 12 Bombers. Jedi firepower quickly eliminated the Hex threat, but the pilots were soon overwhelmed by the arrival of two Sabaoth destroyers and their complements of Sabaoth starfighters and Defenders. Fortunately, Loyalist reinforcements arrived in the form of Nym and the Lok Revenants with three G-400 starfighters and Nym's Havoc, soon joined by three Mere cruisers capable of destroying Toth's capital ships. Nym and his forces targeted the capital ship turrets on the destroyers, while the Jedi engaged the waves of fighters.

After the destruction of one warship, a third Destroyer, Toth's flagship, emerged from hyperspace. The Mere cruisers, led by Antilles on the Tritus, focused their fire on the second vessel, while all starfighter forces targeted the flagship's capital turrets to prevent them from crippling the Mere cruisers. Developments on Geonosis prompted Master Windu to recall Zeta Squadron, leaving Gallia and Tachi with only the Revenants for support. Nym's craft sustained critical damage during the fight, forcing him to withdraw. Nevertheless, the Revenants penetrated the flagship's deflector shields, causing the Destroyer's main systems to fail. Toth abandoned his flagship in a personal starfighter and engaged Adi Gallia in single combat. Toth's weaponry proved insufficient against the Jedi's mastery of the Force, and his fighter was destroyed moments before his flagship exploded.

Confrontation with Count Dooku

Count Dooku brandishing his lightsaber during the Battle of Geonosis.

Amidst the chaotic battle, Separatist leader Dooku attempted to escape to a hangar where his starship was docked. A Republic gunship carrying Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, Padmé Amidala, and clone troopers gave chase. Dooku's wing guard of Geonosian-piloted fighters attacked the gunship, causing Amidala and a clone trooper to fall into the desert below. Despite Skywalker's protests about leaving Amidala, Kenobi convinced him that their mission took priority. The gunship continued its pursuit, deploying Kenobi and Skywalker into the Count's hangar moments before being destroyed by laser fire. General Mace Windu, piloting a fighter tank, pursued Dooku and the Republic gunship, but was intercepted by three of Dooku's Dark Acolytes in front of the hangar. They engaged Windu in combat and were all killed by the Jedi Master's TX-130S fighter tank, but too late for the Korun master to participate in the fight.

Kenobi vs. Dooku

Kenobi and Dooku engaging one another.

Upon reaching Dooku's hangar, Kenobi and Skywalker confronted the Count. As Kenobi began formulating a plan, Skywalker, driven by anger, charged at Dooku. Dooku unleashed a burst of Force lightning, knocking Skywalker aside before turning his attention to Kenobi. Kenobi circled Dooku as the Count attempted to strike him with another blast of Force lightning, demanding the Jedi Knight's surrender. Kenobi grounded the blast on his lightsaber and calmly refused to yield. Dooku drew his lightsaber, assuming a guard position and awaiting Kenobi's attack. Kenobi swiftly charged, but Dooku easily deflected his initial assault and subsequent jab. After a brief exchange of blows, Kenobi slashed at Dooku's legs. Dooku leaped over the attack and flourished his blade to force Kenobi back as he landed. As Kenobi retreated, Dooku taunted him, expressing disappointment in the performance of someone so highly regarded by Yoda.

Kenobi attacked again, attempting to seize the offensive, but Dooku's elegant Form II bladework forced him into retreat. Dooku quickly took the offensive, his Makashi style wearing down Kenobi's Form III defense. Despite the energy efficiency of Kenobi's defensive style, Dooku's precision was so great that most of Kenobi's defensive slashes missed Dooku's blade, forcing him to awkwardly scramble to fend off Dooku's attacks and quickly tiring him. Eventually Kenobi, struggling to keep up, was locked in a blade lock. Dooku, grinning, pushed Kenobi's blade aside and suddenly jabbed at Kenobi's arm, cutting him across the side. As Kenobi recoiled in pain, the Count pressed his advantage, slashing the Jedi across the leg and bringing him down. Despite his initial restraint, Kenobi, fatigued, wielding an unfamiliar lightsaber, and outmatched by Dooku's skill, was defeated.

As Dooku raised his lightsaber to deliver the killing blow, Skywalker recovered from the Force lightning and saw Kenobi's peril. Leaping across the hangar, Skywalker reached them in time to block the Count's strike. As Dooku turned to face Skywalker, Kenobi used the Force to retrieve his fallen saber and tossed it to Skywalker.

Skywalker vs. Dooku

Skywalker and Dooku battle.

Skywalker, wielding the second blade, unleashed a flurry of broad Form IV attacks, briefly catching the Count off guard. While initially surprised, Dooku quickly regained his composure and forced Anakin back. Due to his limited experience with dual-wielding, Skywalker reverted to his standard Form V when Dooku expertly disarmed him, flicking his second blade out of Skywalker's hand and destroying the hilt in mid-air. Defending against Dooku with two rapid strikes, Skywalker quickly retreated to regain his composure.

Slashing a power cable connected to Dooku's ship as he raised his blade into a high guard, Skywalker caused a short circuit that briefly flickered the hangar lights. As the chamber dimmed, the two advanced on each other. Staring at each other, blades at the ready, Skywalker attacked. They engaged in a flurry of swordplay, seemingly evenly matched. Briefly disengaging, Dooku quickly reassessed Anakin's strength before attacking again, and the duel resumed. Despite holding his own against Dooku for much of the duel, Skywalker was ultimately defeated when Dooku twirled and severed his arm with a sudden undercut. As Anakin cried out in pain, Dooku used a Force push to send the Jedi crashing down next to Kenobi.

Yoda vs. Dooku

Yoda dueling Dooku.

As Dooku briefly paused to catch his breath, he heard footsteps, the tapping of a cane, and labored breathing. Turning toward the hangar entrance, Dooku and the newly arrived Yoda faced each other. Dooku attempted to kill Yoda by telekinetically tearing wall fixtures from the hangar sides and hurling them at the Jedi. When Yoda blocked, Dooku ripped chunks of stone from the hangar ceiling, a dangerous tactic as the hangar was carved from a cavern and could cause a cave-in. Yoda caught the chunks and threw them aside, acknowledging Dooku's power but noting the presence of the dark side of the Force within him. Dooku asserted his superior power and unleashed a barrage of Force lightning at Yoda. The Jedi effortlessly caught the lightning and deflected it back at Dooku, who redirected it into a nearby wall. Dooku unleashed a second blast against Yoda, but Yoda absorbed the bolt completely, demonstrating his mastery and the futility of Dooku's assault.

Dooku brandished his lightsaber, declaring that their skill with lightsabers, not their mastery of the Force, would determine the outcome. As Yoda drew his weapon, Dooku attacked, unleashing his full Form II mastery. However, Yoda's mastery of Form IV allowed him to withstand Dooku's relentless attacks and seize the offensive. Realizing that he could not defeat Yoda and that Republic reinforcements would soon arrive, Dooku distracted Yoda by using the Force to topple one of the hangar's power columns onto Kenobi and Skywalker. As Yoda broke off the duel to telekinetically catch the power column, Dooku quickly boarded his ship and escaped.

Aftermath and legacy

Darth Tyranus's meeting with his Master.

The explosion of Toth's flagship was witnessed from the planet's surface. Master Windu contacted Master Gallia for a status report. Gallia confirmed the success of her mission, and Windu informed her that the battle was over, although Dooku had escaped and Skywalker had been wounded. The two later convened privately in the High Council Chamber.

By the battle's conclusion, only Republic soldiers remained on Geonosis. However, the victory came at a steep cost. Upon extraction from Geonosis to Ord Mantell, the Republic assault ship Implacable reported an estimated 12,000 seriously injured and 8,000 walking wounded. Approximately 72,000 clones were deemed fit for combat. Thousands of clone troopers had perished in the fighting, and most of the Confederacy's army had been safely evacuated aboard Core Ships.

Geonosian Archduke Poggle the Lesser had fled with the rest of the Separatist Council, and his warriors had retreated into the catacombs, where they resisted all Republic attempts to dislodge them.

Darth Tyranus arrived on Coruscant to meet with his master, who was residing in an abandoned executive building in The Works, near the Senate District and the Jedi Temple. Simultaneously, the Grand Army of the Republic mobilized throughout the galaxy as the Clone Wars began.

General Grievous fleeing the battle in his fighter.

Grievous remained a mystery to the Republic, systematically eliminating any Jedi or clones he crossed paths with, while Sev'rance Tann managed to escape Geonosis after assassinating Shen-Jon's Padawan, Stam Reath.

Sergeant Kal Skirata of the Cuy'val Dar lost nine of the commandos he had trained during the conflict, specifically the losses from Theta Squad, Teroch Squad, and Niner's squad. Later, he, Walon Vau, Niner, and Fi would contemplate that this was due to the Jedi's misguided deployment of the commandos as standard infantry instead of their intended role as special operations forces.

Back on Coruscant at the Jedi Temple, Masters Kenobi and Windu concurred that the clones were essential for securing the battle, but Master Yoda pointed out the irony in Obi-Wan's use of "victory." The engagement merely marked the beginning of the conflict known as the Clone Wars. They also resolved to investigate the Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, whom Dooku had mentioned to Obi-Wan Kenobi during his imprisonment, in case Dooku's claim held any truth. It would take three years, near the Clone Wars' conclusion, before they identified Sidious as none other than Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. In the meantime, Skywalker escorted Senator Amidala back to Naboo, where they secretly married.

Following the battle, a series of reports called the Geonosian Debriefings were compiled, and CT-1226 received a medal for his participation, upon the insistence of the Republic generals.

Jango Fett's son, Boba, entombed his father and subsequently piloted his ship to the moons of Bogden, where he became involved in a gunfight.

Nym, the pirate, was later presented with the opportunity to command the Karthakk system, an offer he turned down. Subsequently, Gallia volunteered to serve as his personal "Jedi advisor."

In the months that followed the battle, Mace Windu would come to regret his decision to not eliminate Count Dooku when he had the opportunity, as well as his unhesitating killing of Jango Fett.

Jedi Master Depa Billaba would later tell Windu on Haruun Kal that the Republic could have averted a war that resulted in billions of deaths by simply bombing the arena on Geonosis, at the cost of only a few hundred Jedi.

As the Separatists and Republic amassed their military strength, they engaged in acts of harassment. Shortly thereafter, the two opposing governments waged the Decimator campaign and confronted the Dark Reaper crisis.

Several months later, the Republic's occupying force was defeated, necessitating another planet-wide invasion.

A year following the battle, the Geonosians, under the direction of Darth Sidious, initiated the construction of the Death Star above Geonosis.

By two years after the battle, the Republic constructed a memorial on Coruscant, which displayed the names of every clone trooper who perished during the initial battle.

Three years after the battle, during Skywalker and Kenobi's confrontation with Dooku for the last time aboard the Invisible Hand above Coruscant, Kenobi suggested to Skywalker that they fight Dooku together this time, referencing Skywalker's previous rash attempt to attack Dooku head-on that resulted in him being blasted with Force Lightning, with Skywalker agreeing that he was about to suggest the same thing.

Behind the scenes

Battle of Geonosis concept art.

The First Battle of Geonosis continued the Star Wars saga's tradition of large-scale battles in the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.

A scene featuring Plo Koon and Ki-Adi-Mundi raiding a Lucrehulk-class Droid Control Ship was initially planned but ultimately omitted from the final version. Another deleted scene involved the appearance of the Corporate Alliance tank droid.

During the arena battle, Ki-Adi-Mundi is briefly seen using a green lightsaber, deviating from his usual blue lightsaber. In the arena fight, one of the Jedi in the strike team is observed wielding both a blue and a green lightsaber.

In the 2013 mobile card game Star Wars: Force Collection, players had the option to participate in two extensive "quests" known as the Geonosis Battlefields. Participation was voluntary, although this article assumes the player engaged in the quests. The quest included bosses like B1 battle droids and Yoda, irrespective of the player's alignment.

Samuel L. Jackson requested that George Lucas provide his character with a purple lightsaber to enhance his visibility during the Geonosis battle scene in Attack of the Clones. His reasoning was that, as Windu was the second most powerful Jedi after Yoda, he should wield a lightsaber color distinct from the conventional red, blue, and green.

Non-canon appearances

In LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game and LEGO Star Wars: The Complete Saga, Padmé Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Anakin Skywalker face a firing squad of battle droids instead of the three deadly creatures, and Anakin is depicted wielding a green lightsaber.

In the 2012 young-readers book LEGO Star Wars: Anakin to the Rescue, Kenobi is ensnared by a trap set by Count Dooku involving cookies. During the execution, the three captives manage to overpower the beasts but are then surrounded by battle droids. The Jedi then arrive and engage the droids in combat. Amidala and Skywalker ride the Reek, while Fett battles Windu. A Jawa carrying a probe droid in a net collides with him and drags him away. Yoda and Kenobi confront the Count, but he distracts Kenobi with more cookies and escapes. The Jedi then celebrate with a roller coaster ride.
