Gregar Typho

Gregar Typho, a human male from Naboo, served as a dedicated captain within the Royal Naboo Security Forces. His primary duty was to safeguard Senator Padmé Amidala during the turbulent times of the Separatist Crisis and the Clone Wars, prioritizing her well-being above all else. Following in his family's tradition, Typho's uncle, Quarsh Panaka, held the same rank during the Invasion of Naboo, and his aunt, Mariek Panaka, also served as a captain in the Security Forces.

As the Clone Wars neared their end, Amidala made the decision to journey to Mustafar to confront Darth Vader. Despite Typho's strong objections and desire to accompany her, Amidala insisted that C-3PO would provide sufficient care for her.

During the time of the Galactic Civil War, Typho became a member of the Amidalans, a group of rebels determined to find and eliminate those responsible for the mysterious death of Amidala. Ultimately, this quest led to Typho's demise at the hands of Darth Vader and his death troopers.

Biography

Early life

Captain Quarsh Panaka and his wife, Mariek Panaka, were the uncle and aunt of Gregar Typho. His uncle was a member of the Royal Naboo Security Forces. Versaat, a cousin, was another relative of Typho.

Gregar Typho participated in security forces training alongside Dorra at one point. Dorra remained at the Academy to complete a modified version of handmaiden training.

During the Invasion of Naboo, the Trade Federation took Gregar into custody and held him at camp three with other Naboo citizens who had been imprisoned in the campus dormitories of Gallo Mountain University. Typho went to great lengths to protect his family while also making sure that the children in the camp had enough food. Typho discovered a functioning transmitter and assigned shifts to keep in touch with the outside world. He learned that the Queen of Naboo had arrived while he was working one of those shifts, which opened the door for effective resistance to the Trade Federation. Gregar then started getting ready for the upcoming fight. He lost his left eye in the ensuing battle to reclaim the planet.

After Padmé Amidala's tenure as queen of Naboo came to an end and she took on the role of representing Naboo in the Galactic Senate, Typho immediately put Dorra forward as a possible new handmaiden.

Separatist Crisis

During the Separatist Crisis, Captain Typho went with Amidala on a diplomatic trip to Coruscant, the galactic capital, to vote against the upcoming Military Creation Act. The Galactic Republic, which was failing, was being challenged by a rising Separatist movement headed by the alluring former Jedi Count Dooku. In response, loyalist factions under the direction of Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine had proposed legislation to establish a Grand Army of the Republic.

Typho and Amidala survived the assassination attempt on the landing pad on Coruscant

Because of Amidala's prominence, the Senator and Captain Typho traveled to Coruscant disguised as starfighter pilots. Due to the nature of his job, Typho recruited Cordé, one of Amidala's handmaidens, to act as Amidala and travel on her diplomatic barge. This strategy allowed Amidala to avoid an assassination attempt that resulted in the death of her decoy and several members of her entourage. Typho comforted Amidala as she grieved for Cordé by assuring her that the handmaiden had died in the line of duty.

Typho later went to Amidala's Coruscant apartment to beef up security. The Senator's security detail was further enhanced by two Jedi: Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Padawan Anakin Skywalker, who was infatuated with Amidala. That night, as Typho and his men stood guard downstairs, Skywalker and Kenobi thwarted a second assassination attempt on Amidala by the Clawdite assassin Zam Wesell, who used two poisonous kouhuns. As a result, Amidala went back to Naboo with Skywalker. Typho remained on Coruscant to protect the Gungan Representative Jar Jar Binks, who took Amidala's place in the Senate, following these events. Binks supported the establishment of the Grand Army, which portended the start of the Clone Wars.

Blue Shadow Virus crisis

Captain Typho and his soldiers shot down and took into custody a T-series tactical droid and three B1-series battle droids. As a result, Queen Neeyutnee, the current monarch, summoned Senator Amidala and Representative Jar Jar Binks back to Naboo to request military aid from the Galactic Republic. When Amidala, Binks, and C-3PO interrogated the captured tactical droid, Captain Typho was present. C-3PO tricked the droid into thinking it was aboard a Separatist warship and managed to learn that there was a covert Separatist research facility on Naboo that was producing a virus.

Typho raised a blaster at the droid and demanded that it cooperate when it realized it wasn't on a Separatist warship. Binks accidentally destroyed the droid by knocking over some shelves while trying to catch a slug-beetle before he could continue. Despite this setback, Amidala and Binks came to the conclusion that the droid originated from Naboo's Eastern swamps due to the slug-beetle and mud on its chassis, which Binks recognized as originating from those swamps. While Amidala and company traveled to the Eastern Swamps to investigate, Captain Typho and Threepio remained behind to examine the other battle droids.

Typho and C-3PO discovered a hologram of a Separatist scientist named Doctor Nuvo Vindi while inspecting the head of a B1 battle droid, and they immediately relayed this information to Amidala. Meanwhile, Amidala and her companions found Dr. Vindi's laboratory in the Eastern Swamps. Vindi was creating a lethal bioweapon known as the Blue Shadow Virus for the Separatists to employ.

Amidala and her companions, along with the Jedi Kenobi, Skywalker, his Padawan Ahsoka Tano, and several clone troopers, were able to apprehend Vindi and stop him from releasing an airborne strain of the virus after a perilous struggle. Despite being exposed to the Blue Shadow Virus, Amidala and Binks survived because of Skywalker and Kenobi's efforts to obtain an antidote, the root of a reeksa plant from the planet Iego.

Conference on Alderaan

Typho traveling with Amidala in the Senate Building

Later in the Clone Wars, Typho accompanied Amidala to Alderaan for an Alderaan Refugee Conference hosted by Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan, which is to address the increasing humanitarian problem of the war refugees. However, after assassin Aurra Sing's first attempt on Amidala, Typho began to closely watch and keep an eye on the assassin to prevent her from killing Amidala. He and Organa then went to her quarters to stop Sing, only to be unable to open the door. After they managed to get the door open, Typho picked Sing up and arrested her after she had been stunned by Amidala. They then took Sing back to Coruscant to be arrested.

Typho and his guards accompanied Amidala to show their support for Senator Riyo Chuchi after the Trade Federation blockaded her homeworld shortly after Amidala returned to Coruscant.

Deregulation of the Banking Clan

Typho entered Amidala's room and inquired as to what had transpired following a fight between Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and Senator Rush Clovis. Clovis informed him that they had been attacked and that Skywalker had saved him. Then, Typho informed them that a 2-1B surgical droid was on its way. His royal guards then assisted in carrying Clovis to a bedroom.

Imperial Era

Rise of the Empire

The Jedi Temple was attacked in the final days of the Clone Wars, and many Jedi were killed as a result of Order 66. Shortly after, Typho was present at a Senate meeting where Palpatine declared the formation of the Galactic Empire and his own appointment as Galactic Emperor. Shortly after, Kenobi paid Amidala a visit and shared some shocking information about her husband. Amidala made the decision to travel to the planet Mustafar after Kenobi left. Despite Typho's strong objections and desire to accompany her, Amidala insisted that C-3PO would provide sufficient care for her. Typho reluctantly gave in, thinking Threepio could adequately protect her. This turned out to be the last time Typho saw Amidala alive, as she died two days later on Polis Massa after giving birth to her children.

Galactic Civil War

After Quarsh was appointed Imperial Moff of the Chommell sector, Typho did not accompany him for his first official address to the people of Naboo. Sabé took note of this. Typho would instead join the Amidalans resistance cell to look into Amidala's passing. The group came to the conclusion that Darth Vader was responsible for the deaths of both Amidala and her Jedi protector, Anakin Skywalker, and they set out to kill him. Typho, Tonra, and Sabé attempted to do so in 3 ABY by luring Vader into a trap on Naboo. The group led Vader into an underwater Gungan building, where they used a beast caller to summon a Sando aqua monster. Typho and his group managed to force Vader out of the building and into the creature's mouth, after which they released the beast caller, which set off away from the building. Vader was eventually able to escape and kill the beast, after which he set off to Theed, where the Amidalands ambushed him, killing the majority of them. At Polis Massa, the remaining Amidalans attacked Vader once more, but he ultimately prevailed. Typho died fighting Vader and his death troopers.

Personality and traits

Typho was the loyal protector of Senator Amidala.

Gregar Typho, captain of the Royal Naboo Security Forces, was completely devoted to Padmé Amidala, the senator from his home planet. Typho was deeply concerned about Amidala and expressed his worries about her safety when she had to return to Naboo to stop risking her life there due to the Separatists' attempt on her life. Unlike his uncle Quarsh Panaka, whom he succeeded in the security forces, Typho held the Jedi in high regard, expressing his gratitude to Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi when Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker came to check on Amidala in her apartment.

Typho was a human male with black hair, brown eyes and brown skin. He wore an eyepatch over the wound after losing his left eye during the Battle of Naboo. He was 1.85 meters (6 feet, 1 inch) tall.

Skills and Abiliites

As Padmé's head of security, Typho possessed a high level of proficiency in armed combat, military tactics, and security protocols. Protecting the senator from any potential threat or enemy was his main goal. Padmé enjoyed taking part in dangerous missions to counter any threat to Naboo and the Republic, which made Typho's job more challenging. Typho collaborated with Padmé's handmaidens to guarantee her safety. He was also a skilled starfighter pilot who piloted a Naboo N-1 Starfighter when he and Padmé arrived on Coruscant to escort Padmé's J-type diplomatic barge to the Military Creation Act.

Behind the scenes

Jay Laga'aia played Gregar Typho in both the 2002 film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and the 2005 film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith. James Mathis III provided his voice in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series, which aired from 2008 to 2013.

Typho was originally supposed to be shot down by droidekas as he waved goodbye to Amidala in early storyboards for Attack of the Clones. This concept, however, was scrapped.

Gregar Typho's first name is misspelled as "Gregor" in E. K. Johnston's 2019 novel Queen's Shadow. In Star Wars Encyclopedia: The Comprehensive Guide to the Star Wars Galaxy, which DK released on November 19, 2024, this error was repeated.
