Gunn Yage

Around 137 ABY, in the Imperial Navy, a Human female named Gunn Yage served as a pilot. Leading Skull Squadron with the call sign "Gunner," Yage piloted Skull One, a Predator-class starfighter. She was the daughter of Rulf Yage and Nyna Calixte, making her the maternal half-sibling of Cade Skywalker.

Moffs Nyna Calixte and Rulf Yage were Gunn Yage's parents. Her father, Rulf, raised her in the manner he would have raised a son. Gunn grew up with a strong dislike for her mother due to Nyna's abandonment of them to pursue a relationship with Grand Admiral Morlish Veed. Gunn eventually earned her father's respect through hard work and dedication, climbing the ranks without any special favors. She served within the ranks of the 181st Imperial Fighter Wing, ultimately achieving the rank of captain and taking command of Skull Squadron.

Fleet Captain

During her leadership of Skull Squadron, Tev Rimon, Jae Akura, and Brodie Coburn were among the pilots who served under her command and met her high standards. It was commonly said that they would do anything she asked. Around 137 ABY, Yage commanded Skull Squadron in pursuit of a ship they believed to be the Mynock, belonging to Cade Skywalker, over Coruscant. They were unsuccessful in capturing him when Cade descended into the planet's undercity. Upon their return to the hangar, her father reprimanded Gunn for her failure to capture Cade, and instructed her to meet him for dinner the following evening at a restaurant known as the Naboo Queen.

While Gunn was having dinner with her father, her mother, Nyna Calixte, made an appearance. Gunn called her mother a rancor and stated her belief that the ship she and her squadron had engaged the previous day was indeed the Mynock. Shortly thereafter, Skull Squadron engaged the Mynock once more, but this time the Wookiee Chak was piloting. Just as Gunn appeared on the verge of disabling the ship, Captain Skolitz informed her of Moff Yage's orders to disengage and abort the mission.

Imperial Agent

After destroying a stray vessel of the Galactic Alliance, Gunn was contacted by her mother. She was tasked with stopping pirate attacks on Imperial shipments in the Outer Rim, and was assigned an agent of Calixte's named Morrigan Corde to fully utilize her black ops training. Upon arriving on Tatooine, Yage met with Moff Nieve Gromia, who had not heard from Corde in many years. Gromia presented the latest intelligence regarding the pirates, which Gunn recognized as the Mynock, belonging to Cade Skywalker, who was using his ancestor's name "Luke Skywalker" as an alias. Gunn received orders to apprehend Cade. Unbeknownst to Gunn, Gromia contacted Black Sun Vigo Lun Rask, who dispatched three assassins to eliminate both her and Cade before Corde's arrival.

At a cantina in Mos Eisley, Gunn located Skywalker, unaware that he was her half-brother. She captured Cade by flirting with him and then drugging his drink, making him drowsy. She then contacted Morrigan Corde to inform her of her success. However, Corde was displeased that Gunn had told Gromia about Cade. Gunn responded that she was simply following regulations by reporting to her superior officer, but Corde countered that black ops did not operate that way. She warned Gunn about a leak on the Moff Council and that Gunn might become a target. However, Gunn refused to believe her, accusing Corde of acting like her mother. On the way to Imperial Station Bravo, Cade used the Force to choke Gunn, causing her to crash her X-34 landspeeder.

Following the crash, they were attacked by the assassins and were compelled to work together to survive a sandstorm. Cade initially intended to abandon Gunn to her fate, but the Force ghost of Luke Skywalker guided them to the Lars homestead to seek shelter from the storm. There, Gunn insulted the Jedi Order, prompting Cade to lecture her. Gunn then informed Skywalker that her father was the "Hero of Ossus." When Cade called Rulf a monster, Gunn revealed that her father had never considered himself a hero and was simply following orders. After the massacre, he was drunk for a week and was never the same. The revelation that Rulf and Gunn had softer sides eased Cade's anger, and Gunn went to sleep. She awoke to find the Anzati assassins Sint and Nakia Yoru attempting to steal her and Cade's "soup," and she relied on her half-brother to survive once again.

The siblings eventually defeated the Anzati assassins, killing Sint in the process. They left the homestead and discovered that Corde and Syn had killed the Blood Carver. Corde scolded Yage for not waiting for her and instructed her to find evidence of Gromia's involvement in the attempted assassination.

Gunn discreetly returned to Gromia's base and searched through her manifests, discovering that Gromia had purchased items that were too expensive for a Moff's salary, proving her corruption. During a confrontation with Gromia, Gunn learned the truth about her family ties to Cade Skywalker and Morrigan Corde. Gromia had searched through both Corde and Calixte's files in an attempt to ruin Calixte and discovered that they were the same person and that Calixte had once been Kol Skywalker's wife and Cade's mother. Gunn refused to believe this, and in the ensuing struggle, Gromia was shot. As she died, she urged Gunn to use the new information to ruin her mother.

Principles on the line

Gunn Yage orders her squad to fire on unarmed civilian vessels

Skull Squadron was later chosen to participate in Operation: Thunderstroke, an operation ordered by Regent Veed to capture Roan Fel, who was scheduled to meet with representatives of the Jedi Order on the planet Agamar. En route to Agamar, Gunn discovered that her squadron's TIE Predators were missing. They were selected to pilot a new type of starfighter and met the Sith overseer of the starfighter pilots: Darth Rauder, who warned Gunn of the consequences of disobeying her orders.

As the battle between the Sith–Imperial forces and Fel loyalists raged in Agamar's orbit, Lady Rauder ordered Gunn to kill an ejected pilot loyal to Fel. Gunn refused, considering it murder, which led Rauder to torture her using the Force. To spare Gunn from having to make that choice, "Crasher" Rimon took the shot and killed the helpless pilot, much to Rauder's anger. Gunn was clearly appalled, but continued fighting. The battle concluded with Roan Fel's escape, but the capture of Princess Marasiah Fel.

Days later, Skull Squadron participated in the attack on Da Soocha and its moon Napdu. Da Soocha was poisoned in a manner similar to what happened to Dac, while Napdu was subjected to orbital bombardment. Numerous civilian vessels attempted to escape, but Lady Rauder classified them as enemy combatants and ordered their destruction. Despite protests from both "Crasher" Rimon and "Storm" Akura, who confirmed that the vessels were unarmed, Gunn ordered her pilots to target the escaping ships.

Defection

During the final year of the Second Imperial Civil War, some months later, Gunn Yage stood alongside her father aboard the Star Destroyer War Hammer. After keeping her mother's secret dual identity for so long, she felt compelled to inform her father that Nyna Calixte and Morrigan Corde were the same person. However, their conversation was interrupted by a holocomm communication with Morlish Veed. The Grand Moff revealed that Yage's mother was a spy for Roan Fel and had been executed for betraying the Empire.

Soon after, the Sith discovered a secret Jedi Temple on Taivas. The Empire launched an attack on Taivas, assembling an armada of Sith and Imperial fighters. After suffering initial friendly fire casualties due to Taivas' atmosphere, the Sith-Imperials deployed their ground forces. During this time, Yage and her squadron engaged in aerial combat with the Jedi. During the fight, the Mynock entered the battle, and Yage received orders to shoot it down. Torn between duty and personal feelings, she was outraged that her Sith superiors were ordering her to kill her own half-brother.

As the Jedi and their allies held their ground, Darth Krayt ordered his forces to intensify their efforts. Darth Nihl launched a relentless assault on the Jedi's position with an entire fleet of Krayt's new capital ships and starfighters, along with a legion of newly-bred Sith troopers. However, the new wave of attacks resulted in a major case of friendly fire, leading to the deaths of their own compatriots, including Moff Geist.

As the battle continued, Jedi Master T'ra Saa ordered the ships forming the Hidden Temple to take flight and escape. Masters Tili Qua and K'Kruhk took a number of Jedi younglings to safety aboard one of these ships. Sensing their presence, Darth Rauder ordered Skull Squadron to destroy the ship. However, Rauder's order proved to be the final breaking point for Captain Gunn Yage, who could not bring herself to murder defenseless children. Therefore, she defended the Jedi by shooting down Rauder's starfighter, killing her Sith superior as an act of repentance for her service to the Sith. Fully realizing that the Sith were evil and without honor, Yage denounced the Galactic Empire of Darth Krayt and reaffirmed her former allegiance to Roan Fel. When she informed her father of the reasons behind her defection, Moff Yage followed his daughter's example and turned against the regime, having grown to hate it for forcing him to commit numerous atrocities over the years. After killing the Sith in charge of the War Hammer, Moff Yage announced his defection and called on his fellow officers to join him.

Prior to the war's conclusion, Corde revealed herself to be alive to Gunn and Rulf. Both appeared pleased by the revelation of Corde's survival. The war ultimately ended in a final battle on Coruscant. Gunn Yage's Jedi half-brother, Cade Skywalker, was responsible for killing Darth Krayt, thus freeing the Galaxy from the Dark Lord's reign, while the remnants of the One Sith scattered into hiding.

Personality and traits

Gunn Yage was a product of her father's principles, such as honor and discipline.

Gunn Yage, the sole child of a career officer, grew up as a virtual military child, expected to follow in her father's footsteps. Under Moff Rulf Yage's guidance, Gunn was raised to value principles such as honor, duty, discipline, and courage. Besides her exceptional skills as an Imperial pilot, Yage was also a talented leader who earned the respect of her fellow pilots in Skull Squadron. Despite being born a girl to a father who desired a son, she was fiercely loyal to Moff Yage and persevered to prove herself a worthy heir to their family name.

Despite Yage's close bond with her father, she struggled with abandonment issues stemming from her mother, Moff Nyna Calixte, who left the family and eventually became the lover of Grand Moff Morlish Veed. For years, Yage harbored feelings of contempt and resentment toward Calixte. Initially devoted to serving Darth Krayt and the Galactic Empire, she inwardly disdained the Sith's brutal policies. She outwardly celebrated her father as the "hero of Ossus," even though the massacre of the Jedi weighed heavily on his conscience.

As a steadfast Imperialist, she viewed the members of the Jedi Order as enemies of the Empire. Upon discovering that she and Cade Skywalker were half-siblings with the same mother, Yage was shocked almost to the point of disbelief. Although the revelation did not change her bitter resentment toward Calixte, she chose not to destroy her mother by revealing the details of Calixte's past to the other Moffs.

Captain Yage's service to Darth Krayt's Galactic Empire abruptly ended when she realized she could no longer serve the Sith without compromising her honor. Though she knew little about her half-brother, Yage had no desire to murder him. The thought of killing innocent children—even those raised and trained by the Jedi—was also an abhorrent crime in her eyes. Ultimately, Gunn Yage's moral code led her to condemn the Sith as unethical and without honor.

Behind the scenes

When designing Yage's appearance, artist Jan Duursema explored various looks before finding inspiration in a particular hairstyle worn by her niece. The look reminded her of Kara Thrace, also known as "Starbuck," from Battlestar Galactica, and Duursema considered it a risky move due to the similarities between the characters. She chose it because the look suited the character, but Star Wars: Legacy fans ultimately drew comparisons between Yage and Starbuck.

In the sixth issue of Star Wars: Legacy—War, Yage's hair is depicted as significantly longer than usual.
