The Torment, a vessel of the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer type, served within the Galactic Empire's naval forces. Under the command of Captain Lerr Duvat, it participated in the Battle of Theed as part of Operation: Cinder.
Captain Lerr Duvat was in command of the Torment when a droid messenger delivered posthumous directives from Emperor Palpatine following the Battle of Endor. These orders, pertaining to Operation: Cinder, designated the Emperor's homeworld of Naboo as Duvat's target. Convinced that the Emperor was not actually dead, Duvat unquestioningly executed these instructions.

Upon its arrival above Naboo, the Torment deployed climate disruption array satellites, which then began to devastate the planet and its bewildered inhabitants.
After Queen Sosha Soruna of Naboo, Captain Korro of the Royal Naboo Security Forces, Princess Leia Organa, and Shara Bey determined that an Imperial force was attacking via satellites, Soruna, Organa, and Bey obtained N-1 starfighters and ascended into orbit to counter the Imperial offensive.
The Torment, having maintained its position in orbit around the planet, became embroiled in the counterattack, losing numerous TIE fighters and several satellites. Shortly thereafter, a Rebel force, commanded by General Lando Calrissian, arrived to oppose the Imperial presence. This force included the MC80 Star Cruiser, Restoration, Danger Squadron, and the Mellcrawler II.

Following the destruction of the majority of the satellites by Rebel starfighter reinforcements, Y-wing bombers targeted the Torment's deflector shield generators, leaving it vulnerable to a broadside assault from the Restoration, which resulted in the ship's annihilation.
During the Torment's destruction, Imperial forces, consisting of at least two Gozanti-class cruisers, shuttles, landing craft, and TIE fighters, advanced towards the capital city of Theed in an attempt to seize the Theed Royal Palace. Ultimately, an ion pulse was triggered, immobilizing Imperial units and leading to the surrender of the remaining Imperial forces.

The Torment made its initial appearance in the comic book Shattered Empire 2. In 2017, the Torment was featured in the video game Star Wars Battlefront II within the "Outcasts" mission.
