Battle of Balmorra (Galactic Wars)
The significant armed struggle known as the Battle of Balmorra unfolded between the Galactic Republic, the Sith Empire, and the inhabitants of Balmorra. This clash occurred during both the Great Galactic War and the subsequent Cold War era. Balmorra, a world with a history marked by violence, was also fiercely independent and celebrated for its advanced military manufacturing capabilities. This reputation, coupled with its strategically important location, drew the attention of the Sith when they reappeared in the known galaxy in 3681 BBY. Early in their conflict with the Republic, the Imperial forces decided to seize Balmorra's production assets. Consequently, they launched an invasion that resulted in the deaths of many Balmorran citizens and the displacement of thousands, creating a wave of refugees. In response to this aggression, the Balmorrans established a resistance group to combat the invaders and safeguard their political autonomy.
Recognizing the danger posed by a Balmorra under Sith control, the Galactic Republic deployed military and Jedi forces to support the Balmorran resistance. While this aid was sustained for a period, the ongoing war in other parts of the galaxy compelled Republic Military leaders to reassign the units engaged on Balmorra. As their allies gradually withdrew from the conflict, the Balmorran freedom fighters were largely left to defend themselves against the Empire, leading to the Empire's eventual domination of the planet's industries. Even after the Great Galactic War concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Coruscant, the Resistance persisted in their fight against the Sith, even receiving clandestine support from a Republic contingent operating in violation of the treaty. Following several years of this guerrilla warfare, the Republic began to escalate its military presence on Balmorra once more, straining the limits of the Treaty of Coruscant in an effort to liberate the world's workforce from Sith control.
Prelude
In the year 3681 BBY, the Sith Empire made its return to the galaxy, initiating the Great Galactic War against the Galactic Republic. Prior to the war, the planet of Balmorra stood as a leading independent industrial center, manufacturing weapons and droids across its numerous factories and manufacturing sites. Several influential corporations held significant control over the planet, including the Okara Droid Company, Traken Industries, and Balmorran Arms. Balmorra maintained close ties with the Republic, yet its corporations largely kept the world separate from most galactic conflicts. The government of Balmorra was an oligarchic democracy run by corporations, with its center in the capital city of Bin Prime. As the Great Galactic War commenced, the Republic offered ships and soldiers to protect Balmorra, its trading partner.
The battle
The Great Galactic War
Sometime before 3670 BBY, Balmorra became a target for the Empire, which recognized the planet's strategic value due to its proximity to the Core Worlds and its extensive weapons production capabilities. Under the plan of Admiral Ivernus, the Imperial assault began with slicing and reprogramming the networked security systems of Balmorra's laboratories, factories, and armaments, turning the planet's defenses against its own people. This included the release of mutated Colicoids, an insectoid sentient species, from the genetic research facility Lab 352. Lab 352, which had been experimenting on Colicoids in an attempt to transform them into bioweapons, was quickly overwhelmed by the creatures after Imperial saboteurs freed them, leading to the area being dubbed "Bugtown."
Imperial technicians infiltrated the automated Okara Droid Factory and introduced a virus into the factory's computer systems, hoping to turn its advanced military droids against the Balmorrans. However, the virus had unintended consequences: the factory's defense systems and droids became autonomous, resuming production and attacking any biological life that approached the factory. With the orbital defense satellites and towers disabled, the Empire then initiated an bombardment of the surface, devastating Balmorra's military and central government to prevent a coordinated response. The Empire soon deployed a full-scale invasion force, prompting the Republic to intervene and send the Republic Military. The Balmorran Arms factory became a key point of resistance, transformed by the Balmorrans into a heavily fortified stronghold that supplied the Republic and resistance forces with essential resources and weapons.
The bombardment also resulted in the destruction of many of the planet's waste-processing facilities, including the Traken-4 ChemWorks, and the underground system of sealed storage facilities for hazardous materials. As a result, toxic waste leaked into various regions, causing widespread environmental damage. The mutated Colicoids from Bugtown quickly spread to other areas of Balmorra, especially the hazard vaults and other toxic waste sites. The bombardment also led to the extinction of the Balmorran maweater, the primary predator of the flying wingmaw species, causing a rapid increase in the wingmaw population. As the invasion and occupation progressed, wingmaws became a threat to both combatants and civilians, with swarms of these carnivorous scavengers frequently attacking convoys and individual fighters across Balmorra.
During the invasion, the Empire sought to maintain the existing corporate structure on Balmorra, aiming to integrate the planet's industrial capabilities into the Imperial war effort. While Republic forces were supported by many native Balmorrans, including former members of the planet's army, the conflict largely remained a stalemate for much of the Great Galactic War, although the Empire gained an advantage as the war neared its end. Several cities, including Sobrik—the original capital of Balmorra, heavily damaged by bombing runs—remained resistant to Imperial control for most of the invasion. Numerous small factory towns were destroyed by the Empire, including one near the Karill River. The area became known as Ghost Town as the resistance gradually reclaimed the area and launched guerrilla attacks on the Empire.
One consequence of the bombardment was the near extinction of the bormus, slow-moving and peaceful herd animals. Many bormus died in the bombardment, and toxic waste poisoned many more, leaving the species vulnerable to smaller predators. The zeldrate, a smaller creature that preyed on bormus before the invasion, began to target sentient beings due to the scarcity of their preferred prey. Zeldrates were hunted before the Imperial invasion for a caustic chemical they secreted, used as an industrial cleaning solution. With Balmorran industry operating at reduced capacity, the zeldrate population saw a slight increase during the years of warfare, balanced by the rise in zeldrate deaths from attacks on soldiers.
In 3653 BBY, the Great Galactic War concluded when the Empire sacked the Republic capital of Coruscant, using it as leverage to force the Republic to sign the Treaty of Coruscant. According to the treaty, Republic Military forces were to withdraw from all battlefields, including Balmorra. To the dismay of the Balmorran people, the Republic Military was ordered to leave Balmorra, and General Buryn and other Republic officers prepared for the withdrawal. However, some refused to comply: Jedi Knight Fortris Gall disobeyed Buryn's orders and left Base 11A to rescue Demolitions Squad 419, which had been captured and was being held at the Troida Military Workshop.
Gall infiltrated the workshop and, after defeating a Sith who tried to stop him, rescued Squad 419 and returned them to Republic territory. Gall continued to fight the Empire despite orders to stand down, prompting Grand Master Zym of the Jedi Order to send Gall's former master Orgus Din and Lieutenant Harron Tavus of the Republic Special Forces Division to persuade him to withdraw. Buryn's forces remained to await Gall's return as the Empire's deadline approached, and the Empire attacked when the deadline passed, trapping Buryn's forces. Din tracked down Gall as he led Republic forces against Imperial Forward Outpost XT-23, and although Gall was victorious, Din convinced him to leave Balmorra while Din stayed to enforce the Treaty.
The Cold War
Early years of occupation

Following the Treaty, the Empire declared victory on Balmorra and established its planetary headquarters in Sobrik, due to the city's proximity to the Balmorran Arms Factory and the Okara Droid Factory, as well as its resistance to the Imperial invasion. Imperial engineers rebuilt the city, although the outskirts in the Gorinth Canyon remained in ruins, and they installed powerful defensive shields over Sobrik. To rebuild the planet's industry, the Empire forcibly removed uncooperative corporate executives and replaced them, turning the planet's corporations into Imperial puppets—some of whom eagerly collaborated with their new rulers. Corporate executive Brel Orus quickly sided with the Empire, and was rewarded with a comfortable position in the new government in Sobrik, overseeing the confiscation and storage of corporate technologies.
Despite the Empire's initial declaration of victory, they faced constant harassment from the resistance, leading to understaffing and undersupply as Imperial High Command focused on more pressing issues. By the end of the Cold War, Lysennius Melchiro was the thirteenth governor of Balmorra since the initial bombardment, and Balmorra had become a career quagmire for Imperial officers and soldiers. Without an official Republic presence, Balmorrans organized and trained themselves in the resistance. The resistance became a formidable fighting force with superior knowledge of the terrain, waging a guerrilla war against their Imperial overlords. Other Balmorrans also rebelled: the Empire faced rebellious citizens, factory foremen, saboteurs, assassins, and terrorist cells. In response, the Empire placed all regions under its control under strict lockdown, using military policing, curfews, and propaganda to subjugate the population, requiring all citizens to apply for official IDs—a process that tested Imperial loyalty—or face arrest as rebel sympathizers. When the resistance attacked Imperial infrastructure, the Empire regularly punished the families of resistance members and even the entire population.
The Troida Military Workshop was soon reactivated, becoming a supply depot and weapons manufacturer for Imperial forces at Sobrik, and the workshop's overseers were expected to prioritize Imperial concerns over profit. Troida's workers were known to harbor resistance sympathies, and due to the strategic importance of its production, the caravans between Sobrik and Troida were frequently targeted by guerrilla attacks. The Empire made repeated attempts to control the Okara Droid Factory, but these efforts were largely unsuccessful. The Balmorran Arms Factory remained a resistance stronghold and their primary headquarters, transformed into a heavily defended fortress and weapons supplier. Resistance scientists and engineers also began developing a planetary hyperspace beacon, which would allow starships that tracked the signal to jump into the Balmorra system directly in Balmorra's orbit, above the factory.
Grand Marshal Cheketta of the Republic Army refused to retreat from Balmorra despite the Treaty, and he and his Republic troops and Jedi were declared rogue by the Republic. Throughout the Cold War, the resistance was aided by offworld mercenaries, some of whom were cyborgs and engaged in heavy fighting in the Gorinth Wilds. The resistance also used stealth field generators to infiltrate Imperial outposts and assassinate officers and soldiers, though the Empire could not locate the stealth fighters' camp. The remaining members of the government-in-exile, led by former trade secretary Tai Cordan, joined the Rift Alliance: a coalition of powerful worlds dissatisfied with the Republic's failures. However, former Minister of Defense Vol Argen continued to support the resistance from off-planet, sending weapons, supplies, generators, and other resources. Cordan also contributed, sending freelance operative Giana Kayl with lists of supply caches hidden before the occupation, but Kayl's ship Meridian Grace was shot down over Balmorra and the Empire recovered the lists from the wreckage in the Gorinth Fields.
As the Imperial occupation progressed, the resistance continued to occupy Ghost Town, using the town's gardens for food and nearby caves to stage anti-aircraft attacks. The resistance also established a base in the ruins of the Traken-4 ChemWorks called Outpost Traken-4, though the outpost's fighters were regularly rotated to prevent long-term exposure to the chemical waste. The paths between the toxic pools formed natural choke points easily defended by the resistance, as the Empire avoided the camp without traveling along those paths. The resistance established Outpost Victory in a crater from the Imperial bombardment, and though initially small, it became one of the largest and most heavily defended bases. Imperials captured by the resistance were imprisoned in the lower levels of Outpost Victory, and the Republic's remaining forces—including General Aakars and Marren Atma, the base's defense coordinator—were headquartered there.
An Imperial officer nearly caused a diplomatic incident when he killed a delegate of the Chiss Ascendancy, an Imperial ally, after an argument in Sobrik's Sunken Sarlacc cantina. However, Officer Breerdin quickly contained the situation, sequestering the delegate's guards and doctoring a recording to frame the resistance. He then arranged for the guards to be killed and the recording planted, preserving the alliance.
The Imperial Army's Fifth Infantry was heavily involved in the Balmorra deployment, with the First Battalion and Second Battalion deployed around Sobrik. A unit of the First Battalion under Lieutenant Piloc was sent to retrieve plans for a neutron detonator from Bugtown to prevent the resistance from acquiring them, though Piloc's incompetence led to Private Suzoku and half of his unit being killed by the mutated Colicoids. Piloc could not convince Privates Ganbar, [Erelut](/article/erelut], and others to try again, even after shooting Private Camm as motivation, so Piloc sought help from other Imperial forces.
Operation Breaking Point and the capture of Balmorran Arms
Captain Rigel of the Imperial Conquest Consolidation Corps and his second-in-command Lieutenant Davrill developed "Operation Breaking Point" to undermine Vol Argen's support of the resistance. The first phase involved attacking the Neebray Warehouse to destroy generators provided by Vol Argen, cutting off power to anti-aircraft emplacements. In phase two, Lieutenant Thorpe at Markaran Imperial Outpost found a way to use the cyborg mercenaries' technology against them, scavenging it after killing them and pushing the mercenaries out. With the help of a resistance defector named Cavill Arin, the Empire located and destroyed the stealth fighters' camp, ending their assassinations.
These successes angered Vol Argen, causing him to travel to Balmorra, and Colonel Vrain—the head of the ICCC—was so pleased that he personally oversaw the final stages. Under Vrain's orders, Imperial forces infiltrated the Balmorran Arms Factory, disabling power and security systems, and killed Vol Argen. However, they failed to capture the factory, and Grand Marshal Cheketta led the resistance in driving them out—angering the Dark Council and leading them to send Darth Lachris, the former apprentice of Dark Councilor Darth Marr, to take command. Executing Governor Lysennius Melchiro for incompetence, Lachris planned to capture the Balmorran Arms Factory and eliminate Cheketta.
During a raid, the Republic stole plans for a new walker design, though the ship carrying the plans was shot down. Imperial Intelligence offered a reward for securing the plans, and Lieutenant Quisun recruited help in recovering them. After tracking the plans to a resistance-held cave network with Jedi defenders, Imperial forces recovered them and passed them to Agent Nianla.
Due to increased Republic activity near the Balmorran Arms Factory, Watcher Eight sent Agent Veld on a reconnaissance mission, but when Veld failed to check in, Watcher Eight sent additional resources to locate him. Veld retrieved code cylinders from Republic officials, and other operatives created a distraction by planting explosives on Republic ships.
As Imperial forces approached the Balmorran Arms Factory, forces under Sergeant Tulsar sabotaged Republic gun turrets, allowing the Empire to breach the line and gain ground on the Sundari Flatlands.
The resistance established Outpost Freedom in Bugtown, but abandoned it due to the Colicoid threat. The Empire decided to establish a new base on the site, and Captain Augatta was tasked with driving the Colicoids out, planting infrared markers as targets for orbital bombers using specialized toxic bombs. Despite this, the Colicoids returned, and the Empire abandoned its plans.
The Imperial Science Bureau established Project Hexapod, led by Doctor [Revis], to analyze the weaponization of Colicoids. After determining the original facilities in Bugtown, Revis employed help in recovering lab data. However, the data upload was halted in the lower levels, where Revis's help discovered Cessik, a Colicoid of the Colicoid Creation Nest—the Colicoids who had provided the DNA for the experiments. Cessik gave the Imperials the project data to form an alliance and ensure the experiments continued.
A Republic spy stole a sample of an Imperial bioweapon and crash-landed in the Spire Swamp. Captain Jaggard dispatched forces to retrieve the bioweapon before Republic rescue teams could.
The resistance scavenged unexploded thermal detonators and used the thermite to build improvised bombs, but when one was captured and interrogated by Officer Kytoma, the Empire learned of their efforts and stole the bombs to use against the rebels.
The resistance developed prototype stealth shuttles using stolen Imperial shuttles, but an Imperial scout discovered their location. Commander Moriden dispatched forces to steal key codes, disable anti-aircraft defenses, and steal a shuttle, neutralizing the effectiveness of the stealth shuttles.
When the Gold Neebray rebels armed gun emplacements at Outpost Traken-4 to attack the Markaran Outpost, Colonel Teeg called for reinforcements. Resistance forces killed Teeg's reinforcements, but Teeg, unaware, sought help from other forces and destroyed the emplacements.
In the weeks after the capture of the Balmorran Arms Factory, Cheketta's lieutenants—Jedi Knight Noth Armin, Sergeant Tove Weylan, and the mercenary Korin Norrus—rallied resistance forces in the Markaran Plains and conducted anti-aircraft raids. After downing three Imperial squadrons, Darth Lachris issued a bounty on their heads, leading to their deaths. Despite this, the resistance overran the Troida Military Workshop and turned it into a rallying point, becoming one of their largest remaining bases.

Near the conclusion of the Cold War era, the Empire finally managed to seize control of the Okara Droid Factory. Subsequently, they established a base of operations there while their technicians initiated efforts to undo the effects of their virus. Outpost Victory fell to the Empire, but only after the resistance put up a strong fight. The Empire then transformed it into an Imperial base, renaming it Camp Conquest as a constant reminder to the Balmorran people of the high cost of rebellion. Ultimately, the Empire successfully captured Ghost Town and a significant portion of the Jacent Valley, establishing Camp Jacent within the ruins of Ghost Town. The Sundari Flatlands surrounding the Balmorran Arms Factory also became a hub of Imperial activity. Outpost Traken-4 was eventually seized by the Empire and repurposed as an Imperial outpost, renamed Camp Traken-4.
Final Republic offensive
During the initial stages of the Galactic War, the Republic dispatched a military contingent to Balmorra, a world that had been under Imperial occupation since the original Great Galactic War. Working alongside the Balmorran resistance, the Republic successfully drove the Empire offworld, reclaiming the planet and securing access to Balmorra's weapons manufacturing facilities. Among the members of the Balmorran resistance was a Twi'lek named Zenith. When a powerful Jedi Consular, who was the third Barsen'thor of the Jedi Order, arrived on the planet to aid the Rift Alliance and liberate the planet from Imperial domination (hoping to convince the Rift Alliance to join the Republic), Zenith allied herself with the Barsen'thor. Together, they traversed the planet, eliminating Imperial forces wherever they went. Eventually, the pair confronted Darth Lachris, the Sith Lord who held command over Balmorra. As Balmorra's governor, Lachris received support from other Sith and Balmorrans. The Sith Lord Darth Minax, who was also with Lachris, would meet the same fate when Lachris was defeated by the Barsen'thor. With Lachris, Minax, and the Imperial forces vanquished, Balmorra was once again free from Imperial influence.
